Ray JERRELLS, Jr. 85, of Royalton, Illinois fortified with the
Sacrament of the Holy Mother Church passed away at 10:45 a.m.
Wednesday, April 23, 2008 at his home.

Ray was born February 17, 1923 in Eldorado to Ray and Nellie May
(Lipscomb) JERRELLS.

He married Roberta (CLAUNCH) MCELROY June 25, 1960 in Royalton. She
preceded him in death April 14, 2008.

He is survived by three daughters and sons-in-law, Dianna and Frank
STUBITS of St. Louis, Raylene and Carl STAFKO of Royalton and Sharon
and Jerry ZILSKE of St. Louis; a son, Danny JERRELLS of Zeigler;
seven grandchildren, Kelly and John BROSNAN of St. Louis, Jill and
Steve MCKINNEY of Royalton, Frankie and Lisa STUBITS of Topeka, KS,
Aaron and Heather JERRELLS of Carterville, Jon STAFKO of Royalton,
Yalonda and Nate MCVICKER of Columbia, Nikki ZILSKE and her fiancé,
Joe PORTER of St. Louis; ten great grandchildren, Drake, Kassey,
Nicholas and Cole MCKINNEY of Royalton, Tara STUBITS of Topeka, KS,
Blake and Logan JERRELLS of Carterville, Lexie MCVICKER and Tyler
PRICE all of Columbia and Connor BROSNAN of St. Louis; baby MCVICKER
due in August; a sister, Helen Grace SUMMERS LONG of Fort Myers, FL;
several nieces and nephews; a sister-in-law and two brothers-in-law
and many good friends.

His parents; his first wife, Ruth (MCPHAIL) JERRELLS; a
daughter-in-law, Carolyn JERRELLS; an infant granddaughter, Antonia
Roberta ZILSKE and a brother-in-law, Fred SUMMERS also preceded him
in death.

Mr. JERRELLS was a member of the St. Aloysius Catholic Church in
Royalton. He was an Army veteran of World War II serving in the 395th
Signal Company. During his journey through France, Belgium and
Germany he was awarded three Overseas Services Bars, the American
Campaign Medal and the European-African-Middle Eastern Ribbon with
three Bronze Stars. He was a member of the Zeigler American Legion,
Patrick McClellan Post 177 and the Zeigler Eagles Lodge. Ray worked
as a route salesman for Joyner Brothers in Marion and retired from
Allen Industries in Herrin as a supervisor.

A Funeral Mass for Mr. JERRELLS will be held at 9:00 a.m., Saturday,
April 26, 2008 at the St. Aloysius Catholic Church in Royalton with
Father Trevor Murry officiating. Burial will be at the St. Aloysius
Cemetery with military grave side rites courtesy of the Zeigler and
Orient American Legions and the West Frankfort VFW. Visiting hours
are from 5 to 8:00 p.m., Friday at Vantrease Funeral Home in Royalton
with a prayer service held at 4:45 p.m.

Memorial contributions in memory of Mr. JERRELLS may be made to the
St. Aloysius Church, P.O. Box 100, Royalton, IL 62999 or the Hospice
of Southern Illinois, Inc., P.O. Box 157, Marion, IL 62959.

8:05 am Sunday in Marion Memorial Hospital. She had been ill one year.

Mrs. JERRELLS was born Dec 23 of 1925 in Royalton.

Her parents are Mr and Mrs. Pete MCPHAIL of Royalton.

She married Ray JERRELLS Jr. in Benton Jan of 1946.

She leaves her husband, parents, children Raylene and Danny Ray at
home, brothers Bill and Tom at home and a sister Mrs. Thomas POWERS
of Christopher.

Another sister Sue Carol preceded her in death.

Funeral services will be at 2 pm Wed at Royalton Methodist Church.

The Rev Lee Swope, Maron first Baptist Church minister and the Rev
Raymond Clodfelder Methodist Church pastor, will officiate.

Burial will be in Royalton Cemetery,

Sacraments of the Holy Mother Church passed away at 5 p.m., Monday,
April 14, 2008 at her home.

Roberta was born December 31, 1921 in Blairsville to Ed and Della
(COLP) CLAUNCH.

She married Ray JERRELLS, Jr. June 25, 1960 in Royalton.

He survives in Royalton. She is also survived by three daughters and
sons-in-law, Dianna and Frank STUBITS of St. Louis, MO, Raylene and
Carl STAFKO of Royalton and Sharon and Jerry ZILSKE of St. Louis, MO;

She had worked as a secretary at the New Era Dairy in Carbondale for
over 30 years.

A Funeral Mass for Mrs. JERRELLS will be held at 10 a.m., Saturday,
April 19, 2008 at the St. Aloysius Catholic Church in Royalton with
Father Trevor Murry officiating.

Burial will be at the St. Aloysius Cemetery, east of Royalton.

Visiting hours are from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m., Friday at Vantrease Funeral
Home in Royalton with a prayer service held at 4:45 p.m.

marriage dates later than 1930 to the general population but I do
supply them to cousins! My date of birth is 30 Nov 1934 but when it
got posted to the JARRELL ListServer or the general internet it would
appear as 30 Nov 19(private) which tells everyone that I have a hard
date and no further research needs to be done.

Having said that - I post my dob in it's natural form because I'm not

I don't know if you will receive this, but I wanted to thank you again for leading me to find Thomas Jerralds. Your information ultimately led me to David Mills, an excellent genealogist, who is also a descendant of Thomas Jerralds. David had obtained a copy of the Jerralds family bible that lists three different wives (the first two of which died), along with seven or eight children. My Martha Jerralds was Thomas' youngest child. In any event, Thomas was definately from Scotland but no additional links have been made. David did have all of this posted on the internet but I cannot find the link right now. Let me know if any of this is useful and I will dig out my information and forward it.

To my cousins: Today is my birthday and I took the day off and made a trip to the State Library in Hartford, CT. There I found a nice collection of microfilm of early deeds, including those for the town of Trumbull. In Book 4, page 323, I found a Quit Claim deed among siblings clearing up ownership of land. It was dated Feb 8, 1814. In it James Jerrels of Trumbull and Abijah Sherman and Martha Sherman, husband and wife of Huntington, gave to Ebenezer Jerrels, for $40, all their interest in six and a quarter acres of land in Trumbull "which decended to us by heirship from our mother Prudence Jerrels." This Prudence Jerrells was Prudence Wakelee (Wakely/Wakley) (b. 1747) who married James Jerrells(b 1740) Jan 20, 1767. This would mean that James and Prudence Jerrels were the parents of Ebenezer, James, and Martha. There were other children as well - Elenah, Sarah, and one more male.

Marion, a couple years ago you posted the fact that you had seen a manifest for passengers for the ship (La Victoire, I assume?) that Lafayette sailed on to America. Is there any way I can get a list of those passengers? There's a number of us intersecting on that ship, ostensibly with ancestors who were passengers. I'm a g-g-g-grandson of Ebenezer->Cyrus->Albert from the Michigan->North Dakota->Minnesota branch of Gerrells.

I have a month and year of death for her: June 1865. and I have Betsy's b. date as July 17, 1820. As well as the 8 children, I have two other names, which now make sense: Mariah Curtiss b.July 11, 1824 and Nancy Phillips b. Mar. 20 1830. These must have been children from Nancy's 2nd &3rd marriages. Do you have names of Nancy Rowell's parents? I have names and dates of Joseph Sweet's parents and siblings. Hello Marian, I am most interested in your information on the Gerrells. This is the first time I have looked for info about them. All that I know is what has come down to me through the family without any documentation. Betsy Gerrells (July 17, 1820 - June 9, 1897) married Joseph W. Sweet; they had 6 dau. amd 1 son. (I can supply birth and death dates ). One of their daughters, Carlista, was born in Oswego Co. NY, and came to Michigan with her parents. She married Edwin Lore. They are my ggrandparents.
I am particularly interested in your information that Ebenezer Gerrells was married to Nancy Rowell. My family information says that he was married to Nancy Stratton (May 26, 1786 -June 1865). Maybe he was married twice? Or maybe my info is incorrect. I would like to document this part of it, as I am interested in searching my "unbilical line" (mother's mother's mother. etc.).

I am particularly interested in a reference to James and Prudence (Wakely) Jerrells having three children with baptism records. Can you tell me what church they were baptized in. Last Saturday I intentionally went to a fall festival at a church in trumbull so I could casually walk through their cemetery which was begun in 1796. I did find a couple of Wakeleys buried about 1810. I am also still interested in Marion's documentation on the name change from Fitzgerald to Jerrells.
