Origin of the surname Jessop

I've been mulling over our surname since I started trying to piece together my family tree for some time now.
It's been documented (and accepted) by theorists that the name goes back to Roman times or to Jewish physicians....I don't buy into this theory so propose some others thoughts for everyone and anyone to consider.

Could the name be a corruption of De Soppe (Je ssope)? There are a few villages in France that carry the Soppe name in its title. There are very well documented papers of a 'Je ysop' living in Cumberworth, Yorkshire in the 1200 - 1300's as a constable of the area.

It's been suggested that the first Jessop in England was William Sonaire Jessop.
Could this also be a corruption? William, son and aire (ayre) of Jessop? Or perhaps Williams on the River Aire near Jessop?

There are a number of differently spelled Jessops in existance as we speak (Jesop, Jesup, Jessop, Jessup etc...) so why can't thise be feasable?

Any ideas to JessJessop2003@Yahoo.co.uk
