Hi there,

My branch of Jessup/Jessop's begins and ends (for now) with Simeon Jessup b. 1801. He has been a bit of a brick wall for me. I am posting here though because I am trying to find the parents and family of Simeon. I have come to believe that there is a strong relationship, whether family or otherwise, between this Quaker branch of Jessops desended from Thomas Jessop of England/Va/NC,OH and the Presbyterian Stephen Jessup branch of England/NY/NJ/IA. This is much too complex to post here, but I am interested in connecting with those who are willing to trade information. Simeon, while lost in history himself, seems to bring the two families together with regard to friends and family relationships. What I do know and/or conjecture about Simeon and family has been posted at http://www.dunelady.com/laporte/bios/JESSOPSimeon.html .

I look forward to hearing from you offline at whiteknight@live.com

My great grandmother's maiden name was Jessup. She had six siblings. They were born in Calhoun Cty., MI. The youngest, Florence May Jessup, was born in Canada and listed on a census as "other than immediate family." Go to familysearch.org. This is the free site maintained by the LDS search. The name Jessup is lineage-linked to the LDS church so they would have it if anybody would. It may be spelled Jessop or Jessip. The number 2 man at the illegal compound raided in texas! His name is Jessup!

Hi there Joyce,

I have information as follows in my files for Daniel the son of Isaac.

B. 07 Sep 1780 D. 12 Oct 1866

Married Nancy Ann STEWART, 1816 in Green, Hamilton, OH

This Daniel JESSUP was known as "Indian Dan" to distinguish him from his relative Daniel, son of John. He spent several years among the Indians, and could speak Pottawattamie as well as English to the day of his death.

Daniel JESSUP fought in the war of 1812, was captured near Detroit, learned to speak Pottawatomi, and later became an agent for "Indian Affairs", which earned him the nickname "Indian Daniel".

Notes Source: GenForum posting by Sean JESSUP, Jun 7, 2003 Re: Isaac & Mary (Smith) JESSUP of IN.

I have information for Daniel JESSUP, son of John as follows:

b. 04 Apr 1792, d. 28 Aug 1843

Married Ann SEWARD in 1814

Second of three (or four) brothers residing in Hamilton, Indiana in the early 1800's. Daniel migrated to La Porte Indiana, from Hamilton, Indiana in the early 1830's
Source: 'Edward Jessup of West Farms, Westchester Co., New York, and His Descendants' ; by Rev. Henry Griswold Jesup. Privately printed for the author by John Wilson and Son. 1887. Copyright 1887.: page 356.

Daniel JESSUP moved to La Porte, Indiana around the 1830's.
Source: Jessup Genealogy pg. 357

Daniel JESSUP came to La Porte, Indiana in 1831. Several of his sons also staked claim to lands in La Porte, Indiana in 1831 and actually moved to La Porte in 1832 (Irwin Seward, John Seward, Abiezer Miles)
Source: Extracts from "An Illustrated Historical Atlas of La Porte County, Indiana, Transcribed T.C. Wyman.

The two are related through Stephen JESSUP b. 1710 in New Jersey. (g)

In regard to which one was a substitute, if the information in the above can be verified, then it may mean that Daniel, son of John would not have gone to war. Hope this is of help!

Doug

My ancestor Noah Davis (b1791 Cumberland Co.,NJ) was a substitute for a Daniel Jessup in the War of 1812 in Hamilton Co., OH. Naoh enlisted in 1814. I am trying to figure out which Daniel Jessup Noah would have substituted for - Daniel Jessup son of John or Daniel Jessup son of Isaac. It's possible that the families knew each other back in Cumberland Co., NJ. as well as in Ohio. Any information would be greatly appreciated!

Hi,

I saw your message on the Ancestry message board. We must be related because I have the same information as you on Samuel Brook and Mary (Ross) Jessup, my great-great-grandparents. I have recently found their marriage record and his naturalization record. However, I haven't been able to find their ancestry. I would love to hear from you, so we can compare notes.

Richard Griffith
rgriffithone@surfbest.net

JESSUP, Charlotte Louise (Scott)

The Green Bay Press Gazette, Green Bay, WI, April 01, 2007

Charlotte Louise (Scott) Jessup, 91, passed away on March 7, 2007. Charlotte was a resident at Sandpiper Bay Health and Retirement Center in Wichita, Kan. She was born in Greensburg, Penn., on Sept. 11, 1915. Preceding her in death were her parents, Harry and Martha (Nana) Scott; her brother, Wayne; sisters, Genevieve, Dorothy Morgan and Martha Howard; first husband, Allen Shoup; and second husband, Edward Jessup. She grew up in Wilkinsburg, Penn., where she married Allen Shoup. Allen and Charlotte were the parents of Wayne, who was born in Wilkinsburg and currently lives in Fairfield Glade, Tenn; and Gordon, who was born in Chicago and currently lives in Wichita, Kan. Charlotte married Edward Jessup in Hammond, Ind. on March 26, 1965. Charlotte is survived by her two children, five grandchildren and 13 great-grandchildren.

From 1955 to 1980, Charlotte was a secretary for various businesses while living in Chicago, Kansas City and Hammond, Ind. She retired in 1980 and lived at the Port Plaza Towers in Green Bay, Wis. She became a resident at Brown County Nursing Facility in Green Bay in August 1999. In November 2004 Charlotte became a resident at Sandpiper Bay.

Charlotte took piano lessons when she was a girl and loved to play the piano and organ. She could play from sheet music, but enjoyed playing by ear the most. The residents at Port Plaza Towers enjoyed many hours listening to Charlotte play at a 1928 Steinway piano. She was good at improvising and could play any song once she heard it. Even when she lost her sight, she managed to play the old songs that she liked.

Charlotte will be interred at Nicolet Memorial Gardens in Green Bay, Wis.
"My" Jessups lead to New York (Oliver - New York - gg grandfather) and probably England (John). Tracking beyond that has been futile because there seems to be a John behind every bush (no pun intended).

The North Carolina Jessups I have met have not seemed interested in the pursuit.

William Royall Jessup (b. Shelby, NC), son of Lloyd Lavern Jessup (b. Horseheads, NY).

Bill (William Royall) Jessup

Can you give me any more information? My grandfather was William Lewis Jessup form the Elmira/Horseheads area of New York. My great-granfather was Oliver Jessup, b. 1805, NY. I understand we are descendants of a John Jessup of England. My e-mail is wrjessup@bellsouth.net.
