Hi,

I am convinced that the Jewer name has no connection to the Scottish "dewar". Randy's information has led to some work on the idea that Nicholas came from England, but the name comes from the people's in east Europe, and in particular from Hamburg. As European professional geneologists cost upwards from $1500, the hunting down of facts will have to wait a bit. But, the facts do exist. We know the year Nicholas was born, and church records would likely exist with this information about him. The Internet itself has not been helpful about the European roots of the name or where people with the name are living. The Latter Day Saints in Utah, who are world renown for their geneological research, may yet be a valuable resource for more more information.

I was born in New Waterford, Nova Scotia to Mary Marsh who was a Jewer. She was born in Newfoundland and had seven brothers, Walter, Asaria, Howard, William Ronald, Chesley, Percy, Fred and of course Mary the only girl. My mother was deceased in 1960 in Brantford, Ontario. My grandmother's name was Providence. If any of this rings a bell let me know if there is a connection.

Hi, I found in Dorset History Centre at Dorchester, a record of a William Jewer, carter of Kingston Hall and Others, regularly being paid his expenses from 22 Nov 1788 - 18 Sept 1790.

I also found the apprentice indenture of Anthony Jewer, son of another William Jewer, husbandman, apprenticed to James of Young of Binkham, yeoman dated 28th January 1700!

Dorset History Centre holds the archives of Kingston Lacy, formerly Kingston Hall, and no doubt there are a lot of Jewers in there but sadly spending cuts means lack of staff to transcribe so many records.

Hi,

Unfortunately, there are gaps in the Nicholas Juer information from his possible birth in 1673 and the following few generations. The work that I have viewed on this was done by Randolph Jewer from Botwood. Randolph is now deceased, although I do have a paper copy of his work. The most accurate information concerning the first Juer/Jewer's of Newfoundland are found in the church records of the Carbonear/Harbour Grace/Spaniard's Bay area. I recommend a week-long visit to the archives at "The Rooms" in St. John's to review original copies of those records. I only had one day and could not do a thorough documentation and connection of all the family names. Someone needs to do a crucial analysis of all Juer births, marriages, and deaths in that area for the period between mid 1700's through late 1800's. If this has already been done, I'd love to see the data.

Given that Nicholas Juer may have been the first Juer in Newfoundland, it is clear that he was a part of the English Colony at Carbonear. This made him an English settler and of the Anglican faith. He likely travelled from Bristol, England, the primary sea port at the time with Newfoundland as a destination. Hopeful information would be in ship manifesto's or birth and other records in England. This has yet to be seriously researched by someone. Both variants of Juer and Jewer exist in England today. If any research on those names have already been done in Great Britain, then information regarding the origins of the family name etc. would exist. Unfortunately, "googling" has not been fruitful in discovering such research. Perhaps there are contacts through geneological societies that could provide clarification on this. Again, I have not yet tried to hunt this down.

Hopefully we'll eventually get to this information.

Jerry

When I asked him what the relations were between my family and your he said that maybe they are third cousins (but he doesn't know for sure)
He told me to contact an uncle of mine who researched the Jewer name and maybe he could tell me how your family is connected to mine.
I put together a family tree (it's not much but maybe it
help)I'm not to sure how to link the family trees so I was hoping that you might know)
If I could get a copy of the photo you had mention I would really appreciated it. You can send it to my e-mail coreenjewer@rogers.com
Once I speck to my uncle I will get back with you to let you know what I find out and in the mean time if you find out anything please keep me in contact.
All the best
Coreen
Coreen,

My Father and mother knows your family. In fact, your great uncle Ray (Melvin's brother) used to play in a band with my father. I think I have a photograph of the band if you want a copy.

We are very likely related, but the connection is a little further back than your Great-Grand Father Aubrey. I would like to make this connection. Do you have a tree created with birth information for your family? If I can connect you to our family, I have information going back to the first settler in Newfoundland, Nicholas Juer (born about 1673). I am presently working on where he came from.

trying to find information on my wife's birth mother. Her name is frances jewer. According to recently received adoption papers, she was born in 1928 in nova scotia.she was one of eight children. she was 18 yrs old in 1946 when my wife was born in montreal. Mary jewer signed the baptism record as a witness. the adoption record said her father was over 50 and a coal miner in 1946, and suffered from ulcers. Her mother was 50, and in good health. the report stated that her family had a long history of social problems. My wife and I visited her mother in 1991 on Georean bay ontario. Several of her brothers lived near by. she has been very secretive in regards to her family history. We are trying to trace my wife's geneology, and we were only able to produce her mother's name and year of birth.

Emily:
I am trying to find any connection to Jewer of Wimborne,Dorset and a Elizabeth Stoneman. My father Henry John says on his WW1 army records that his mother is now Elizabeth Jewer. My father Henry John (Harry) was given into the care of Fagens Boys Home in 1906 under the name of Coole. He had two sisters, Emily Francis, and Ethelind Maud who after the 1901 census of Ivybridge Devon I have never been able to trace. Does any of this sound off any bells with this family. Elizabeth was born Ivybridge, Devon 1872 as PHILLIPS and married George STONEMAN in 1892. By 1901 george I think was in the army. Still unable to find army records. Between 1901 and 1906 Elizabeth ends of in Winborne Dorset. The address my father gives on his army attestation papers for his mother is: Elizabeth Ann Coole, 10 Hinton St. Marys, Hermenster, Newton, England. On another paper he says her name is Elizabeth Jewer. On his Fagen admission papers her name is Elizabeth Coole, with the address C/O miss jewer at the St. Marys address. If you have any insight into this mess I would love to hear it.
Daughter of Henry John
I visited Spaniard's Bay last November and happened to take a picture of Holy Redeemer Anglican Church. I was able to increase the size of the pic and read the name. After Googling the name I was able to access some birth. marriage and confirmation records. The first appearence of the "Jewer" nmame with this spelling that I could find so far was the marriage of Henry Jewer 0n Nov 25, 1819 to Elizabeth Chapman. Elizabeth was from Spaniard's Bay and Henry from Harbour Grace. There was a marriage of James Jewer in 1831 as well and I'l look for this info. Both of these Jerer's were married at St.Paul's Anglican Church in Harbour Grace.
If anyone has or would like any other info or pictures from Spaniard's Bay my email is brucejewer@hotmail.com

Hello Bruce,

The Jewer name, leads back to Newfoundland and then back to the UK,same as the Jewers name. The Dewar name is from the Jeur name (1052) as Jewers, Jower, and 23 other names from Scotland. If you know a true Scot, they will pronouce a J as a D. I have been researching the Jewers name for some time now (25 years)and I still find new info. Keep up the great work and check out the Newfoundland info.

Your Charlotte Jewer Collins was the wife of William Collins. William was the 'son' of a couple Abraham Collins and Teresa Gosse. Abraham was the brother to my gg grandfather Timothy Collins. Abraham, Timothy, John and George were grandchildren to a couple Timothy Collins and Jane Warford, one of the founding families of Spaniards Bay. If you would like more information, or could share information about William and Charlotte, I would be glad to hear from you.

My family are from Dorset. Grandad had relations on Brownsea Island, in Poole Harbour, in the days when only relations of inhabitants were allowed there.
The family were farm workers. My great Grandfather was a Carter (running carts and horses) on a big farm north of Wimborne Minster. Later the family lived at Holt, a hamlet noth of Wimborne. My Great Great Great Grandfather came to the Uk from France at the time of the Norman Conquest.
That makes sense to me as the English pronunciation of Jewer is similar to a French word like Jouer (which seems to me, with limited French, like the verb to play.
After the first World War there was little employment in the UK. My Grandfather, Frederick (Fred) Jewer, who had tracklaying experience in the UK, went to Canada. He left his young family in the UK in order to earn money to send home. He was employed as a ganger in constructing the Canadian railroad system. Work was hard, living in tents and laying track.
On returning to the UK he gained employment, with two other men (Ted Speck - brother in law and Len Maidment) and together they dug all the clay for the Carter's Company which owned the famous Poole Pottery. The china clay was mined at Corfe Mullen - just near Wimborne Minster, and shipped by train weekly to Poole.
As a young Lad I visited the mine and went down the shaft to deliver lunch to Grandad wrapped in a cloth.

Where all this about Canadian and Scottish origins sprins from I really do not know.
Hello Tiffany,

The Jewers line comes from England to the Penn State to Nova Scotia and spead out from there. In my research of my family name I have come across the Jewer name but more often from Newfoundland. I looked into the Jewer name and found Dorest England is the place the Jewer line leads to.

The name is not French, or German or from Scotland, it's Saxon, going back to 1052 so far. The first spelling is Jeur. All the other spellings came from that name. This comes from 30 years of research by me and my brother.

Names are made from different ways, Williamson (son of William), Goldsmith ( a job). Jeur ( a wash bowl and jug in a bedroom). Every name has a meaning.

I hope this helps you

Paul L Jewers.
I just found this site...I have a new found curiosity for my roots. My sister and I live in the Mid-Atlantic area - I in PA and she in MD. My father was Robert Frederick Jewer - son of James Jewer of Baltimore. I was too young to remember him or his wife when they died. I had and Aunt Kate and an Aunt Mary - I believe they were James his sisters. My dad - Robert referred to them as Aunt but that doesn't mean anything. My dad was one of alot of children - he was the youngest and recently died a year or so ago at 68. I did see what appeared to be the connection to NewFoundland for Aunt Kate and Aunt Mary and James my grandfather. There are now several Jewers and decendents thereof living in and around Baltimore where my dad's family was raised.
