October 24, 1745:
This is to give Notice to all it may concern, that I John Jewers, of the City of Philadelphia, Mariner, have been unfortunately married to the Wife of William Cooke, supposing him to be Dead at the Time; but being since credibly informed that he is really living, and on board one of His Majesty's Ships; this is to forwarn all persons not to credit the said Margaret Cooke on my Account, for I will not pay any Debts she has contracted, or shall hereafter contract, seeing her former husband is living.
I am not related to this family, I am just passing on this information, which comes from a book titled "Runaway Women, Elopements And Other Miscreant Deeds, As Advertised In The Pennsylvania Gazette - 1728 -1789. (together with a few abused wives and unfortunate children)." Compiled by Judith Ann Highley Meier. Published by Closson Press. 1993. Page 9.
