George Stewart Jr (the Canadian man of letters) M. Maggie Jewett

I am looking for information on George Stewart Jr (the Canadian man of letters, 1848-1906) and his wife Maggie Jewett (died 25 Dec 1905). I know basic bio of him, but I have very little on her.

His parents were Elizabeth Dubuc and George Stewart Sr.

I now understand why my Great Grandfather was Jaspar Shorah Jewett. I know Jaspar moved to Kansas and married Louisa Furnish who died when my grandfather was very small. My father was born in the house where Jaspar homesteaded. My father was named for Edward L. who I believe was a judge in Dodge City. My Grandfater was probably named for his uncle Arthur.

Harry Jewett's wife, Mary was the daughter of John Henry Wendell and Ella Howe Visscher both from upstate New York. John Wendell was a very wealthy businessman in Detroit. I am of the Wendell family. More information available upon request.

My great-grandfather was Shorah Jewett, youngest brother to Barzilla. Barzilla had 8 children: Edward L., Eliza Jane, William T., Decatur, Arthur W., Otis Gilman, Josephine, and Jasper. Probably Jasper was named after his uncle Shorah. I have information on both the Ohio and Kansas sides of the family.

Tom, if you come up with the age of your mother at the time of your birth you can come up with an aprox birth date, and perhaps the state you were born in. Hannah is a popular name in the Jewett family, but perhaps not so comon at the time you were born. Good luck with your quest and keep us posted. Jim Jewett

Dear Ms. Carri Cole,

I believe my 3rd great grandmother, Aurelia T. Jewett Sanders, may be a child of Caleb Jewett (born Jan 15 1739/40 in Norwich, Connecticut, son of Caleb Jewett and Rebeckah Cook) and his second wife Anne Bartlett ( married 2 JAN 1784). A newspaper article that was published in Auburn, Cayuga, NY, on the occasion of her 90th birthday says that Aurelia was born in Sharon, CT, in 1786 and when she was two years old the family moved to New Canaan, NY, and that eighteen years later they moved to Cayuga County. The article and her obituary do not give the names of her parents. There is only one Jewett in the Canaan, NY, census records of 1790 and 1800 and that is Caleb. There is a female child indicated in those records who would have been the age of Aurelia. Then in 1810 Caleb Jewett is in the Mentz, Cayuga, NY census. At that point there are two females under 10 and two females in the 16-28 category. Either Anne had died or she was fudging about her age which happened a lot back then. In 1818 Aurelia married Wheaton Sanders (Yankee family from Rhode Island). It appears Caleb died in 1813 in Aurelius. The Abstracts and Wills document attached shows a relationship to Wheaton Saunders and a possible son, Benjamin B. Jewett. Aurelia and Wheaton had a son named Benjamin S. Sanders and a Family Search IGI file shows a Benjamin Bartlett Jewett of Aurelius married a Nancy Sanders about 1820 and that she died about 1850 in Eckford, Calhoun, Michigan.

Does the Jewett Family of America know where the record is found regarding Caleb's second marriage and is there any information available about Anne's parents? I thought she might be the daughter of Rev. Nathaniel Bartlett of Redding. In a book I found online it mentions him and gives the names his children...and he did have an Anne (christened 25 FEB 1759) who fits time-wise but there is no info on who she married or where she lived.

Circumstantial evidence indicates this Anne might have been living in Sharon with her older brother Russell when she met the widower, Caleb Jewett there.

I have quite a bit of data on Aurelia's progeny and also on the ancestors of Wheaton Sanders (spelled Saunders earlier) if you anyone is interested.

I have been to the website and am sending my application for membership to the Medway, MA address.

I'm working on the Jewett line with Evenlyn whose posts also appear on this thread.

I have the indexes to the Cayuga county wills on loan at my local Family History center (FHC) and will be checking for any will or probate papers for Caleb Jewett.

I'll check that index within the next week or two but if he died intestate, I'll have to wait until September to request additional indexes as the FHC will be closed for the month of August.

Have you found the parents of Aurelia T. (Jewett) Sanders? I am currently researching her family and according to a family story, her father's name was Caleb Jewett.

I have her obituary but it did not mention her parents.

My friend found references to our Sanders, Jewetts and Keyes lines in the Smith-Foshee genealogy. That publication does have mistakes in it...and little documentation See attached file showing one page. The book is viewable on
Ancestry.
I am busy packing. Saturday I am moving to SLC where I plan to spend lots of time at the FHL!

I am adopted and on an original birth certificate, was my biological mothers name of "Hannah Jewett"...I was only 3 days old when this occurred, so there is no recollection. Just going on the cert and my adopted parents information...

Hi, just found your post this morning as I'm now researching my 3rd great grandmother, Almira Jewett, who might connect to this family and explain the 2nd female in the 16-28 category. Maybe she's Aurelia's sister?

Almira Jewett was born 1785 and died 1857. She married James S. Dixon. I found them in the 1850 Census under "James Dixson" in Mentz, Cayuga, NY.

Other Dixon researchers listed her father as Caleb Jewett (maybe because he was the only Jewett in Cayuga county?) and her mother as unknown. They also thought she was born 8 Oct 1785 in Columbia, NY (but the 1850 Census says she was born in Connecticut) and died 4 Dec 1857 Port Byron, NY.

I need to do more research but wanted to say that thank you for posting and sharing your information. That newspaper article for the occasion of Aurelia's 90th birthday is dynamite information! :-)

Maybe my next step is to see if Caleb Jewett of Cayuga County left a will?

Hello cousin,
I am a descendant of Betsey Sanders the sister of Wheaton Sanders. She married a Jonathan Keyes of whom I know very little. I have done some research into the Sanders family and another sister Nancy Sanders married Benjamin Bartlett Jewett. I have always assumed that Aurelia and Benjamin were brother and sister, since his middle name is Bartlett it sounds like Caleb and Anne are a good bet. I will dig around and see if I have anymore info on the Jewett's. They seemed about as elusive as my Keyes. If you ever see any Keyes mentioned with the Sanders I would love to know about it.

Polly Jewett born in Owen Co. Kentucky about 1827. She married R.Andrew Bourne in Owen Ky. abt 1857. I would like to know anything you know about them. They lived in Texas not far from the town of Jewett.
Their children were William A.,David, Etta, John, Susan and Alma. Etta married my ggrandfather, John Thomas Moore. They lived in Houston, Harris, Texas.

Most likely a descendant of Matthew Jouett who migrated to America. He was born in Lisle De Re,France abt 1681. His descendants live in the South and went by Jouett, Juett and later many took on the English spelling, Jewett.

Jewett Texas was named after Henry James Jewett who was born in Portland, Maine in 1813. He was a lawyer in Leon County Texas and a railrood executive, so when the rail line reached that point, they called in Jewett.

Mary Emily Jewett is thought to have been the daughter of Henry Jewett, born abt 1845 in Orford,Grafton,NH and his wife Margaret, last name unknown to me, she born in Ireland. Preston Jewett was the son of Charles Wesley Jewett, born abt 1848 in Will county, IL and died 21 Dec 1906 in Texas, married 3 Dec 1871 in Vernon County, Missouri to Mary Elizabeth Cooper. Charles was the son of Joseph Edgerley Jewett born 17 Jun 1824 in New Market, NH, died in 1865 in Whatcom County, WA, was married to Caroline Frazier 7 Aug 1847. All descendants of Maximilian Jewett.

My GG grandparents were Lydia Ann Jewett and Filander H. Jones, both originally of Vermont. They later moved to Indiana and then Ohio. Their daughter, Ellen, was my great grandmother. She first married Wilson Cherry, and after she was widowed, married my great grandfather, Martin Walbridge, who was also orginially from Vermont and then Indiana. If anyone has any information, especailly on Lydia Ann Jewett or Filander H. Jones, I would be most appreciative.

She died 03 Jun 1836. I would like to know where she died and where she is buried if possible. Eldad Baton married his second wife Calfornia GILLIGAN 12 August 1843 in Trumble, OH. I have an Anna Bartlett Jewett born about 1766, probably in CT. She was the second wife of Caleb Jewett (b. Jan 15 1739/40 in Norwich, Connecticut, the son of Caleb Jewett and Rebeckah Cook). One of their daughters (my ancestor) was Aurelia T. Jewett who married Wheaton Sanders.

Howard Sherman Jewett, 85 of Zanesville passed away at 1:00am on Saturday April 25, 2009 at Good Samaritan Hospital.

Howard was born on June 12, 1923 in Zanesville (Muskingum County) Ohio to the late Nathan and Anabell Lynn Jewett.

He was a graduate of Lash High School.

He was a machinist at Brockway Glass for many years, was a member of Putnam Presbyterian Church, Amrou Grotto, Lafayette Lodge #79 F. & A.M.. Scottish Rite 32nd degree mason, American Legion, Eagles, FOP, and VFW. Howard enjoyed motorcycles and playing music in the Sleepy Hollow Band and was inducted in the Muskingum County Country Music Hall of Fame.
Howard served in the US Army in WWII.

He is survived by a daughter, Mary Anne (Charlie Dover) Wickham of Zanesville; a stepson, Bill Mattey of Baldwin, New York; two sisters, Doris (Gary) Flynn of Nashport, Ohio and Eva (Carl) Creeks of Zanesville; a grandson, Chad (Jamie) Wickham of Zanesville; three great grandchildren, Carter, Logan, and Parker Wickham. Several nieces and nephews survive.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Anne M. Jewett; and a brother, Hugh Jewett.

Calling hours will be 2-4 & 6-8 on Tuesday April 28 at The SNOUFFER FUNERAL HOME 1150 W. Military Rd Zanesville. Funeral services will be held at 11am on Wednesday in The Snouffer Chapel.
Burial will follow in the Chandlersville, Ohio Cemetery with full military honors provided by George Selsam VFW Post 1058.

LDS has lots of info on Harry Jewett. You might be interested to know that I could not trace any connection of our family but that doesn't mean there isn't. I also found a Jewett who lived in our area in the 1870s who shared a common ancestor with him. It is all on the LDS website.
