Your great grandfather, John (Jan)Korbas came over on the ship "Darmstadt" with my great uncle, Peter (Piotr) Krzysiak. Peter was 18 at the time, I think I recall that John Korbas was around the same age. They were from Dobczyce, Poland. They also came with Alexander Korbas (John's brother) and a Peter Lielionski (not sure about spelling on that name). The ship left from Bremen, Germany and arrived at Baltimore, MD. Said they were all going to Chicago, IL. The ship arrived January 20, 1905. You can see all this information on ellisisland.org website. Pull up Jan Korbas and you can see more.

Apparently my great uncle Piotr Kryzsiak also knew the Jez family. He listed his friend as being Oebastyan Jez or Jerz.

I think that all of our families knew each other in Dobcyzce as I see reference to the fact that the Krzysiak, Figlewicz, Drozdowicz, Jez, Korbas, Stach and Kowalski families from Dobczyce knew each other and some of the family members got married between these families.

I have more! Let's connect if you want to : )

By the way, my grandmother(Josephine, Jozefa Krzysiak), my grandfather (Joseph Drozdowicz) and my great grandparents (Anna and John Drozdowicz) all came here to Chicago from Dobczyce around the same time as your great grandmother. My other grandparents (Piotr and Mary Krzysiak) were also from Dobczyce.

Jeanette

Hi Mark,
From what I understand my grandfathers parents were from the bohemian side of
czech. I also believe that the family
scattered during Hitlers reign of Germany
but I'm not positive. At this time I do not know the first name of my great grandfather.
But I do know that there were two brothers that came to America throught Galveston,Texas
from South America or Central America. Could you find out from your mother where her family entered the U.S. Thans for the message
and hope to hear from you soon. jeff

Hi Jack -

I am able to track my Wojnarowski line back to the late 1700's and am interested in 2 things:
1) You are researching the Wojnarowski name and am curious to know what region of Poland that line is from (mine is from Slotowa, a village near Pilzno).
2) I am curios about the Anna Wojnarowski you mention in Chicago. I have lost track of an Anna Wojnarowski born in 1892 in Slotowa. She married in 1913 to a Franciszek Fraczek in Slotowa, who died shortly after marriage. I cannot find any other record of Anna. It is possible she came to the US prior to 1920.

It appears she had a brother named Stanislaw (Stanly) Michael Jez who came to the US 17 Nov 1907 on the German ship "Seydlitz" (Ellis Island record) and may be found in the 1920 and 1930 census of Chicago with wife Anna Wojnarowski, children Adam, Walter, Bernice and Cecila. We show his father as Stanislaw Jez, Sr and his mother as Mary Anne Szubryt but have not found any siblings. A copy of Stanley WW I draft card is on ancestry.com. I have saved it and can email it.

I have recently pieced together some family history. Mary Jez, who lived on Noble St. in Chicago gave birth to my mother Rose Jez in 1912. My mother attended Peabody school but was taken from her mother and then raised in Maywood. This whole story would make an unbelievable movie. Does any of this sound familiar to anyone? I am very interested in piecing this together. Thanks.

Dear Sharon,

I'm afraid that I only know a little as I'm a Jez by marriage. My husband's family lives in northeastern Pennsylvania. The little bit of information that I can give you is that a Jozef Jez arrived in Texas in 1850. I know that the family came from Bohemia (what is the Czech Republic today). My husband's grandmother came from there. Her name was Elizabeth Trischik Jez. The family is Catholic.

I hope that that is of some help to you!

Have a blessed holiday season!

Sincerely,

Carrie Jez of Beavercreek, Ohio

Hey guys!

I think it's so cool that we all share this great (okay, odd) last name somewhere in our heritage. My question is: Do any of you know if there is any Jewish blood in the family? Or if there could possibly be? I'm converting to Judaism and it's kind of important and sentimental for me to know.

Thanks,
Leigh Ann

Hello! My name is Carrie Jez, and I live in Beavercreek, Ohio (just east of Dayton). My husband was told that an ancestor with the name of Jozef arrived in Texas, U.S.A., around 1850, from Bohemia (the western part of Czechoslovakia, what is today known as the Czech Republic. My maiden name was Mlada, which has also been traced to Bohemia (My father has told me that there is actually a town called Mlada there.). My mother's families, Schneider and Yost, both came from Germany, and my husband's mother's family came from Poland! That's what's so great about being American--even as individuals, we are our own melting pot!

Only my mother came to the US. She was born in Zwittau, Sudetenland which is now called SVITAVY I believe.Only the name some how was changed to Jesch. Old Czech writing has my GG grandfather as Peter Jez with a little umlout over the z.Apparently Peter had a son before marrying my GG grandmother Amalia Hornisch Jesch.I have no idea what the son's name would have been.Amalia and Peter had Franz and Marie.Peter died early and it was believed Amalia married a man called Carl Friedrich Weiss and they moved to Canada.

I can make out Peter Jez my GG grandfather and I know my GG gandmother was named Amalie born Hornisch. My mother would know more. She was ousted during the war from Sudeten Land.Which no longer exists. There might be a connection. Wish I could read Czech there are a few more names listed but I can not make out the writing.E mail me and I can tell you more from what I have. Good luck.

Jez family in Chicopee/Chicopee Falls

Jez is a fairly common name in Chicopee and Chicopee Falls, MA. It is believed that a large component of the Polish population in that area mistakenly thought that they had arrived at Chicago when they heard Chicopee.

Anyway. Catharina Jez married Stanislaus Cebula in 1890 in Poland. He was born in 1862 in Mielec, Poland, She was born in 1865 in Mielec, Poland.

Immigration was 1902/7 for him, 1907/9 for her (census records are hard to read). 4 known children, including my G Grandmother, Marianna Cebula, born 12 Mar 1891 in Mielec, Poland.

Some of this information was gleaned from census records, some from Marianna's baptismal record, which I had in my hand before she died.

Anyone know these people, or even where Mielec, Poland is?

Hi, I have been researching my family tree and have discovered that my g grandmother on my father's side was Mary Jez. She came to the US from Dobczyce in Poland Austria. She arrived in 1906 on the ship "Neckar" and was only 15 yrs old. She married my g grandfather John Korbas who died and she later remarried a man named Peter Dobronski. She was born 7-30-1890 and died 1-10-1950. Does this ring a bell with anyone? I would like to know more.

Another Jez from France

Hello !
I've just read your message. Written 1 year ago, I am afraid you may not read mine...
Well, anyway, let's have a try !
I am another JEZ from France. It was the name of my grand-mother born in Poland and arrived in France during the last war. She had a sister returned to Poland after the war, both died 1 year ago. We are still in contact with our family in Poland, it's a real pleasure !
By the way, do you know the meaning of our name : it is "hedgehog" and I find it a very nice "emblem" for me !
I've been told JEZ is not that common in Poland. Could my family have a connection with yours ?
I would be glad to read from you anytime ! Let's see what INTERNET could do ?
Séverine
Jim

We corresponded about 2-3 years ago - my ancesty is Cebula also and you sent me a disk with your info on it. Mielec is located about 120 kms. east and just a tad north of Krakow. It is also about 40 km.s south west of Tarnobrzeg and about 90 kms. northesat of Rzeszow. My Cebula's are from Cisow Las, about 50 kms. as the crow flies, frin Mielec. I went to Poland in 2000 and am going again this year in Aug. I am planing to digitalize parish records for many places in the area, Mielec is on my list but I;m not sure whether I'll make it there, I have about 6 places that are must dos, Mielec is one of the options, if I have time. I did get back on my direct Cebula line to 1741, but I don't have all the info on the collateral lines. With Mielec not being all that far away, it's not unreasonable to assume that a Cebula or two may have moved west from Cisow Las. If I get to Mielec or find a connection, I will be in further contact with you.

Betty
