Aljain J. JILES

Aljain J. Jiles is the son of Benjamin Franklin Jiles and Sarah Ellen Whitfield.

Algian (spelling typed above handwritten Aljain) J. Jiles’ death certificate (copy in file) provides the following information. He died in the WOW Hospital in San Antonio, TX of pulmonary tuberculosis. He was born, 12/15/1874, GA, died 10/31/1932. His wife’s name is Laura B. Keylon and he is divorced. His parent’s are B.F. Jiles, born GA and Sarah E. Whitfield, born GA.

The 1930 census lists LA as the place of birth for the father of Laura’s children. LA was the resident state of Aljain’s father and siblings from the late 1800‘s until their deaths.

He used the Algin spelling in 1918 on his WWI Draft Registration and on the 1920 census. It appears that he started using the Aljain spelling after 1920. After reviewing the facts available at this time, it is my opinion that Robt. Giles listed in the1880 census and Algin/Aljain J./Algian J. Jiles are the same person. Algian’s parents are listed as B.F. Jiles and Sarah E. Whitfield on his death certificate. Several legal documents have the “Algin” spelling. Robert’s age on the 1880 census is the same as Aljin/Aljain’s in later census. No other records have been found for Robert after 1880. Aljain’s older brother, William Franklin Giles, named a son, Robert Algin, who named his son Robert Algin, Jr.

Aljain J. Jiles married Laura Bell Keylon, b. 2/16/1877, TN, d. 8/24/1953. According to their descendants, they married about 1901 in Indian Territory, OK. She was the daughter of James Henry Keylon and Rhoda A. Fuller. They married, 8/8/1872, in Roane Co., TN.

His birth and death date used, taken from his death certificate. They share a joint headstone and are buried in the Texhoma Cemetery, Sherman Co., TX. His name inscribed Aljain J. Jiles and his birth date, January 15, 1874. Her birth and death date from their headstone.

Children of Aljain J. Jiles and Laura Bell Keylon are William Horace, John Warren, Oma Bell, Earl, Dock Henry, Robert, Rhoda Ellen "Dolly", Beulah Opal, Overton Jack

Note:
Rhoda Ellen was named for her grandmothers. Rhoda, from her maternal grandmother, Rhoda A. (Fuller) Keylon, and the middle name, Ellen, from her paternal grandmother, Sarah Ellen (Whitfield) Jiles. Story goes, when she was born, her brothers, Robert and Dock were looking at her and one of them exclaimed "She looks just like a little Dolly" and that stuck with her for life.

Laura,

This 3-way conversation is becoming polluted and convoluted. Benjamin Franklin died in 1914. Olga was born in 1908. She never even knew him! I rather doubt Olga had conversations with him since she was only 4 when he died. I doubt that she knew Elizabeth. I don't know exactly when Olga married Hobson but it was most likely after the 1930 census.

I have interviewed at least 1/2 dozen or more of Benjamin Franklin's grandchildren. Children of Thomas Jefferson, Pompy, Etta and Selma. They each told me that Lillie was a 1/2 sister to their parent. However, none of them knew which parent they shared. I take that back, one said she was from his first wife and that is Sarah. Several told me the siblings never thought or considered the other as a 1/2 brother or sister or 1/2 aunt or uncle and never gave it any thought. The records indicate she was either B.F. and Sarah’s. We do not know when Sarah died so it is possible. Or... it is possible she was Elizabeth Pinkerton’s daughter from her previous marriage to Mr. Jones. Lillie is listed in the census as Jiles, never Jones. The date of birth on her tombstone is 4/10/1885. The records show B.F. and Elizabeth married 8/17/1885. The date of birth on Pompy’s tombstone is 6/9/1886 and family members assure me this is correct. The other option is she was born to B.F. and Elizabeth before they married.

At this time, I simply have nothing to prove Lillie J. Ayres parentage either way. I am looking and open to any information.

The best advice I can offer about genealogical research is to stick with the facts and be as accurate as possible. Never Assume! I will be glad to help you in anyway I can.

Yes, we are related.Your grandfather, Pompey, was a half Brother to my Great-Grandfather, William (Willie) Franklin Giles that lived in Ruston. His father was Benjamin F. Giles (Jiles after he came to Louisiana.) Actually in the Mineral Springs Cemetery just north of Ruston, you can see children of William Franklin Giles buried side-by-side that have the different spellings Giles/Jiles. It was during my Grandfather, Robert Algin Jiles, generation that the name was changed there in Ruston. Willie Giles, son of B.F, always went by the Giles spelling and would not let his be changed. He and his wife are also buried there in Mineral Springs Cemetery. I'm sure you know that Benjamin Franklin Jiles is buried in the Old Saline Cemetery there in Saline, Louisiana.

I have been to the cemetery in Ringgold where Pompey and wife are buried. There are also about 3 headstones there for "baby Jiles". Do you know anything about those? Who are the parents? Any dates or gender on those?

Also looking for more info on Pompey's mother, Lizzie. Thank you!!

Sandy

Hi Audrey, it's me again. Sandy says to please tell you "hi". Was passing the DNA info onto Sandy and we started talking about Lillee (Lilly? How Sandy spelled her name). Sandy said she knew that Lillee is not Ben and Sarah's daughter. Their only daughter was the one listed on the 1880 census. Sandy says she knows this from conversations she had with Great Aunt Olga Jiles who knew Ben personally before he passed away. She had had conversations with him regarding family and he never mentioned his daughter Sarah to her. She says she guess he figured it didn't matter. Aunt olga fished alot of photos out of Aunt Murtle's trash can of Ben, Sarah, and the William Jiles family as well. Hope this helps with the research. Thank you again for all your time and help, Im pretty knew to this so I'm learning from everyone and reading up on how to research as I go, thanks for your patience. :D Sincerely, Laura Landers

Laura,

You are welcome but obviously, I am not explaining the DNA very well. Your brother is not a candidate for the Jiles. He has HIS father’s DNA and would trace back to your father’s side of the family. In order to trace the Jiles, the male must be a Jiles. Example: Robert Algin and Morgan plus their sons and their sons are candidates.

It will certainly be a big break through for all the family researchers when the right family member steps forward to do the test.

I would appreciate any family updates.

Audrey
Hi Laura,

The DNA is an exciting tool for family researchers. It is probaly the only solution for proving our earlier Gile/Jiles ancestors. The yDNA is passed only from male to male (father's fathers’ father, etc.). Brothers (and their biological sons) of your mother and Claudia’s are ideal candidates. Because we have documented their lineage to Benjamin and we suspect he (Benjamin) descends from Jeremiah Giles (b. circa 1760, d. 1838) through Wiley. Hopefully, who ever from our family does the DNA will match the 3 Giles who have tested in the Giles DNA project through "http://www.familytreeDNA.com", which will prove our line back to Jeremiah. They descend from Wiley’s brothers and all three matched. I suggest that our Jiles’ participant join this ongoing project. I have no affiliation with any of the companies qualified for testing. It just makes sense to me to have the results available in one place for comparisons and making family connections. The cost for a 12-marker test is $99. If necessary, he could always upgrade at a later date.

Your mother and Aunt Claudia are not candidates to test for Sarah’s American Indian heritage. The myDNA must be a straight line female without interruptions (mother’s mother’s mother, etc.) As far as we know for sure, Sarah only had one daughter and I have not been able to locate her since the 1880 census. So...this means we would need a daughter’s daughter’s daughter of one of Sarah’s 2 known sisters for testing. The only other possibility could be one of Lillie (Jiles) Ayres’ daughters and I am tracing them. However, I have not found proof of Lillie’s parentage, yet. She could be the daughter of Ben and Sarah or Elizabeth’s daughter by a previous marriage. I have interviewed several family members who knew her. They all knew she was a 1/2 sister but no one recalls which parent was biological.

This link can better explain the types of DNA. "http://www.worldfamilies.net/choosetest"

Thank you for your interest.

Audrey

Hi Audrey, this is Laura Landers, Doris Jiles (Smith's) daughter. Sandy and I have been talking about the DNA testing and my mom would be interested in doing it as well as her older sister my Aunt Claudia. The question is would this qualify as a direct female line for Sarah or would we need to look elsewhere? If they would qualify would you suggest going through Ancestry.com for the DNA test or a different provider? I've just started researching the possibilities of DNA testing and read up on Ancestry's options in addition to another resource that was referred to me through one of Rick's family members that does geneology. My mom said she'd be willing to do it about midsummer after all her doctor visits are updated she's had some thyroid problems going on. That and theyre in the process of moving my brother out in California right now. But please let me know,if mom or Aunt Claudia would work for the direct female line. Sandy said our cousin Steve Jiles Uncle Son's son might be interested in doing the DNA for the male line or we might try and talk to Uncle Morgan about it. Thank you so much, Laura

Jiles Surname

Joseph Carrington was born on 30 October 1880 in Texas to the parents of John Carrington and Harriet Rivers.
Sorry..downloaded update and it messed up my computer..I think it is fixed now..almost had to start from scratch to correct it.

I needed causes of death for mothers siblings..Shermaine helped there but now I need causes of death for spouces
Also where everyone is buried..not only state but cementary if possible.

Seems Strokes and Ca is main causes of death on mothers side. This is good to know, because both runs in families and those living need to beware to protect their own health. Diet and exercise and blood test can prevent strokes most of the time, but Cancer..doctors need to be aware so they can order the right tests..to stay on top of it.

Worth to the National Archives and see if we can get more information
Tomorrow I am going to look in my information and see if I can find him among the Cherokee's....
The census takers often spelled names the way they sounded...
If his birth name was Wa li he could have pronounce Wa sort A and li with the i sounding like a long e.
In Cherokee li is pronounce LE..and NC and SC and Ga were Cherokee territory.
According to my grandmother, Emma Dell (my mother) often talked of being a Cherokee Indian.. when I met Ruel, he also mentioned it. At the time I was in awe that I was actually talking to an Uncle on the Jiles side.

WHOA Sandy! Correction...I never met Benjamin Franklin JILES. He died in 1914, years before I was born. I use written records available when documenting dates, times and events (including his ages) in the “Jiles Family History”.

I have interviewed several descendants of B. F.‘s and they all told the same story. It was passed down to them that Sarah E. Whitfield was ½ or ¼ Cherokee Indian. I am trying to find a direct line female who might do the myDNA test, which could prove or disprove the Native American heritage.

We are also hoping for a direct line male to do the yDNA to prove connection back to Jeremiah. (b. circa 1760, d. 1838).. Three Giles have tested in the Giles DNA project through http://www.familytreeDNA.com. All three match proving a connection to Jeremiah.

Audrey
Laura,

Sorry, I cannot help you with the ARRANT surname. My records show only that Claudia Ophelia Arrant was the mother of Selma Cumi/Cummi Willis. I have traced the 12 known children of Benjamin Franklin Jiles and their descendants. I have names of their spouses and children plus several later generations. There are only a few cases other than my husband’s direct line (Thomas Jefferson JILES) that I researched the parentage of the spouses who married into the family.

Lots of luck!

Audrey

Re: Looking for Information about Benjamin Franklin Jiles and Sarah Elizabeth Whitfield

Hi Laura,

Wiley and Reuben, plus John, Thomas Robert and Jeremiah II are believed to be brothers and sons of Jeremiah and Mary “Mollie” (Dills) Giles. William, shown on the 1840 Spartanburg, SC census, is a nephew through their brother John.

According to records, Wiley Giles was the father and Martha was most likely the mother of Benjamin Franklin Jiles. A couple of Wiley’s brother’s male descendants have done the DNA and matched. I have tried for several years now to find a direct male descendant of B.F. to test. I have also looked for a direct female line from Sarah and/or her sister to test for proof of the Indian blood. No luck yet, but maybe someone with enough family interest will eventually come forward and test.

Sarah was the daughter of John Whitfield and Lucy unknown. Her known siblings were Elizabeth, Drecilla (sp?), Sarah E., Sterling, John, others unknown I have traced each of her siblings. Sarah’s death and burial place has yet to be documented by me. Although unproven, she most likely died between 1881 and 1885 in Polk or Bartow Co., GA. No Dawes # or record for her has been located. If there is Indian heritage, as many descendants have been told, I have concluded it must come through Lucy. I have not found Lucy’s maiden name or parents.

I am following the descendants of each of Benjamin Franklin Jiles 12 known children, Wm. F., Starling L., Aljain J., Thomas Jefferson, Sarah, Morgan, Lillie, Etta, Pompy Lee, Gordon, Selma, and Josie, separately. I have photos of seven of the children and other family members including the ones you mentioned.

Many different tales have been told and passed down through the years. However entertaining some of the stories may be, none have yet to be proven. According to Civil War records Benjamin Franklin was 20 or 21 when he joined the Confederate Army. Had he deserted, it is doubtful he would have received his pensions.

B.F. Giles served as a Private in the Confederate Army during the Civil War. He was wounded (gunshot to right hand) during the Battle of the Wilderness in VA. After spending a number of days in the C.S.A. General Hospital in Farmville, VA, receiving treatment for infection of ring and middle finger, he was given a 60 day furlough. (records in file). While trying to make his way back home to GA, his wound became infected. A widow woman took him in and while he was there, Federal soldiers over took him. A Federal surgeon (SEE Pension Application in file for complete details) amputated his right arm, below the elbow. Stated in the application papers, B.F. was born Dec 15, 1840 and enlisted in 1861. Other records indicate he was born Dec 15, 1844 and enlisted in 1864.
The Adjutant General’s Office on January 2, 1909, in a reply to the Louisiana Board of Pension Commissioners, Baton Rouge, “It is shown by the records that B.F. Giles, private, Company E, 60th Georgia Infantry, Confederate States Army, enlisted February 20, 1864. He is reported on the roll for the period from May 1 to August 31, 1864, latest on file us [as typed] “Absent, wounded, 5 May, 1864, Wilderness, Va; Furloughed, absent without --- since August 1, 1864. No later record of him has been found.”
B.F. stated in his pension application he was discharged because of his wounds. The Battle of the Wilderness was fought in VA, May 5-7, 1864. He also states he was in Murray Co., GA at the time of surrender.

Benjamin F. Jiles filed for a GA Confederate Pension in Polk Co., GA, Nov 26, 1879 (copy in file) for loss of limb. He signed with his mark X. Witnesses, John A. Brooks, Josiah V. Philpot and Ellis W. Clements testified Benjamin was wounded in the right arm in the engagement of the Wilderness in VA and same arm was amputated below the elbow. He received payment in the amount of $40.00, Dec 2, 1879.

B.F. Jiles filed an Application for Relief by Soldiers Maimed or Disabled during the Late War, July 25, 1887, in Calhoun Co., AL (copy in file).

He married Elizabeth Ann Pinkerton, 8/17/1885, Polk Co., GA by Rev. Jack Davis, Bk C, Pg 24. She is buried beside him in the Old Saline Cemetery, Saline, Bienville Parish, LA.

Might you be the daughter of Doris Faye?

Hope this helps and perhaps clear up some family myths.

Audrey Griffin
Sarah's full name was Sarah Ellen Whitfield. She was born in South Carolina around 1844 and died sometime around 1880 in Polk, Georgia. Her mother's name was Lucy Whitfield. We have found records of Ben, Sarah and Lucy on the 1880 Georgia Census, not sure why Sarah and Lucy disappear shortly therafter heard that they died but we're trying to confirm. At the time of the census Lucy was a widow and listed as assistant housekeeper on the roll. We always heard that Sara was Cherokee and I've seen a copy of a tintype my mom has, she looks very Native American but haven't been able to locate her or her mom on any rolls. Not sure about Lucy's maiden name, may be King but have not been able to confirm this.

Benjamin Franklin Jiles served as a Private in the Confederate Army. No later record of him has been found. B.F. stated in his pension application he was discharged because of his wounds. The Battle of the Wilderness was fought in VA, May 5-7 1864. He also states he was in MUrray, Co. GA at the time of the surrender.

B.F> JIles filed for a GA COnfederate Pension in Polk, GA. Nov. 26, 1879 signed with his mark X. Witnesses John A. Brooks, Josiah V. Philpot, and Ellis W. Clements testified Ben was wounded in the right arm inthe engagement of the wilderness in VA and same arm was amputated below the elbow. He received payment in the amount of $40 Dec. 2, 1879. B.F> filed an application for relief by Soldiers Maimed or Disabled during the Late War, July 25, 1887 in Calhoun, Co., Al (copy in file).

He married Elizabeth Ann Pinkerton 8/17/1885 in Polk, Co. GA by Rev. Jack Davis, Bk C. Pg. 24. She is buried beside him in the Old Saline Cemetary in Slaine, Bienville, Parish, LA.

Hope this helps, my cousin and I have been tracking down info on Ben for awhile now, but most of this information comes from our wonderful wonderful relative Audry Griffin who actually had a chance to talk to Ben himself according to my cousin while he was still alive. He did lie about his age when he joined the Confederate Army in order to be old enough to fight so that is why you might see a discrepancy in the birth year on his tombstone and those on his military records.

And in the 1870 Barstow county, Ga. page 435.[only Lousia (Eliza) is listed with three children (Wm age 18, Martha age 12 and Emly J. age 10); also listed is a woman age 102 [can't read it].

Thanks for the reply,
I am not possitive of the Last name of Mary Ann. May be Liles, Jiles, Giles, Siles. All I know about her is she was Rabun Cty. Birth SC living with a Will iams family. If not mistaken she was 22 in that census. I have no other info for her and would love to know anything. Descendants?anncestors. Just anything. But I also want to know it is the correct person. I am thinking she remarried or died shortly after 1860 as I have not found her in the 1870 census nor her girls under husbands name.
Looking for Information about Benjamin Franklin Jiles and Sarah Elizabeth Whitfield

Hi all, i was asking about Ben a few years ago and then my computer fried. Finally have new compter so im back :) Since then been able to dig up some more information about him but we are at a dead end with finding any info about his parents or the father of his wife. This is what I have:

Benjamin Franklin Jiles and Sara Elizabeth (or ellen) Whitfield. At the time of the census before Sara's death her mother was living with them and sarah's mothers name was
Lucy Whitfield. After Ben died, he went on and remarried an Elizabeth Ann Pinkerton. Im decended from doc and his first wife through their son william Frank whose son was Robert Algin Jiles married to Selma Cumi Willis. Ben and his first wife sara were from the Bartow country Georgia area or thats at least where the last census records fro them were i believe. I have that Sara died in Polk Georgia. We heard stories that she was Cherokee or half Cherokee and Ive seen an old tin type of her but haven't been able to check out the dawes rolls yet. Does anyone know if she or her mother have a registry number? Also know that Bens parents died when he was young and that he had two or three older brothers. One fought for the union and the other two i think for Confederacy. Ben wanted to fight for the confederacy and tried to signup when he was 15 but was to young so hunted and fished for the confederate army until he was 17 and then could fight. He was wounded in The Battle of the Wilderness and lost i think it was his left hand. My cousin has a picture. It was said at that point he deserted and a widow woman found him and since it was gangrene she crossed the lines to get a union doctor who amputated it. He then stayed and worked several years for her to pay off her kindness at least this is what ive heard from my great aunt olga who recently passed away and my cousin. Thanks to anyone who can help. Sincerely, Laura Landers

Hi Audrey, this is Doris Jiles daughter and Sandy's cousin once again :) Aunt Claudia is sending me the information thats she's gathered so far so that I won't be doing repeat research. However, she said they were having a hard time proving who the father of I believe William M. Arrant. I think we initially thought it was a William H. Arrant(s) but now could possibly be William James Arrant(s)? Would you have any clue over to which one he might be? Ive found plenty of information on Wiliam M. but not enough to positevly say for sure that he is the father of William M.
I guess. Thank you so much for your time, and your very very thoughtful reply to my earlier question about Benjamin Franklin I was able to pull up records on him and my mother was sooo excited :) Im hoping i can infect her with the geneology bug to :) Thank you again, Sincerely, Laura Landers
