I am looking for information on my family. All I have is from 1930 census records. Grandfather Christian Oscar Johansen, Grandmother Cora. Their children were James A., Fannie, Kenneth Peter, Robert, Agnes, William, Pearl, Amelia, Mary, Lillian and Annabelle. My grandfather may have changed his name from Jens Christian. I also know that he was born in 1881 in Vallensved, Denmark and my grandmother was originally Cora Taylor having been born in Canada.

Anna Charlotte Johansen (or Jonsson?)

I have been trying for some time to trace the antecedents of my Swedish maternal great-grandmother, and was very interested in your website.

Her name was Anna Charlotte Johansen. (My mother was sure this is the
correct spelling of her last name, but it may have been Jonsson, and in the US she sometimes went by Johnson.)

She was born May 12, 1882. I am not sure of her birthplace! She always said
she came from Stockholm, but her husband's naturalization papers list her
birthplace as Gothenburg. She has no naturalization papers of her own.

We have an old Swedish bible inscribed "Hilma Jonsson Sörheden {sic}", with an added note "Hilma Josefina died 12 July 1905. She was 19 years, 8 months, 18 days." That would mean she was born 24 Oct 1886. Perhaps she was a sister?

The year of her emigration is a bit of a puzzle, too, I'm afraid. According
to her story, she first visited San Francisco when she was 16, as a
passenger on the maiden voyage of one of her father's ships (he was a
ship-builder). Later, probably around 1903, she came back to San Francisco
via Boston, on another of her father's ships. The 1910 San Francisco census
lists her year of emigration as 1904, and the 1930 census as 1902. The 1920
census, and the passenger list from her 1938 return visit to Sweden, list her
year of emigration as 1903.

She married John James Ross on 8 June 1907 in Oakland, California.

Unfortunately I have almost no family papers to go by, as many have been
lost or destroyed.

I would be most grateful for any help with this puzzle. I feel a very strong
connection to Anna Charlotte, as she is my direct maternal ancestor. I would
be happy to supply you with any additional information that I have.

Clarence Johansen of Burlington, Iowa

My name is Beth and I am the great granddaughter of Clarence Johansen. I am seeking any information that anyone may have. Clarence had two sibilings: Cora and Joe or Joesph for given name. Clarence married Helen W Mowers on October 27, 1926 who was the daughter of Ella Rieke (B 6-26-1879) and Joseph Mowers (B 9-25-1876). They had two daughter Marilyn (John Elliott) who lived in Elkhart Indiana (D 2002?) and Jaqueline (George Tenhaaf) who currently resides in Ponchatula, Louisiana. I believe that Clarence's parents may have been M Christine Olson from Denmark and Johana Johansen also from Denmark. If you have any info or are looking for info for: Polen, Johansen, Mowers, Rieke, Kaestner, Elliott or Tenhaaf please feel free to email me at tattudgurl@yahoo.com

Broaen Johansen Of Staten Island, New York

Hi all. I am Broaen's great-grandson. He was born about 1850, emigrated to the US around 1875 and settled in Staten Island, NY. He and his wife, Matilda, had three children, two of whom lived to adulthood. Edward, their son, was my grandfather. I have scoured sources of names, but have yet to come across the name "Broaen" as a Norwegian given name. Have any of you ever heard of that given name? Do you have any information about the Johansens in Staten Island? Any help to get me going would be appreciated. Thanks.
Gerry Johansen

Nope. Check the Norwegian census online. Norwegian names were the father's first name, plus sen (son) or datter (daughter). Father Hans, so name would be Hansen, etc.

May also have been Danish, but they are DEFINITELY Norwegian names!

Try a search on these websites to start with (cut and paste)

Norwegian census
http://www.rhd.uit.no/folketellinger/folketellinger_e.aspx

Ellis Island
http://www.ellisisland.org/

Birth and death certificates can contain useful information, although the fees for them are steadily going up and it can take a couple of months.

Also try the US census on Ancestry up to 1930 (you can get a free trial).

Good luck!
I am looking for ANY information I can get on Anton, Alstrom, Anton's father, Johan Pederson, any info on the family...even if it's something small...would love to know more about where they lived, what they did.. parents, grandparents, great grandparents names, anything!!

I found the website showing the 1865 census and the 1900 census. I couldn't find anything on the 1875 census though.

I did not have a birthdate for Anton, only that he was born about 1855 according to the census records and the LDS marriage info to Berit Eriksdr that was listed.

Ancestry.com had a listing for Alstrom when he entered the US via Canada, departing from Liverpool England but I didn't know where he left from in Norway, nor where he entered the US after coming through Canada. Alstrom did settle at some point in Minnesota as that is where I believe he married and he also had his children there and died there.

Thanks so much for any info provided. I am always excited and pleased to find any new info and I am willing to share with any family members found!

Thanks, Jaime

He married Berit Marie Eriksdr in 1878 in Dverberg, Nordland, Norway. She was also born about 1855, possibly in Dverberg as well. They had two children that I know of, Alstrom B. Antonson and Hilma Kristine Antonson or Antonsdr/Antonsdatter. Alstrom emigrated to the US in 1907. Hilma did too but I don't know when.

Thanks!!
Dear Brian,

Although my grandmother's maiden name was also Johansen, I don't know whether there is any relationship except that my family were in Alaska at the same time. My grandmother Jenny Sophia (nee Johansen) Strandberg came to Alaska about 1901; she had three sisters: Josephine (lived in Anchorage), Hilma (lived in Seattle), and Ingrid (who lived in Denmark). I seem to recall mention of a brother with whom my grandmother had lost contact.
Nevertheless, I am sure members of your family must have known mine. The Strandbergs lived in Anchorage, Portage, Kenai, Soldotna, as well as in the Kuskokwin River Valley (Medfra, Candle, Flat, Iditarod, Ophir, etc.)from the early 1900s. They were gold miners.
There are old photos and documents in the University of Alaska Anchorage archives that may help. Our family contributed over 10,000 items--mainly photos.

You might want to try looking in the Seattle area. My grandmother's sister Hilma Johansen was married to Lennart Nilsson about 1920 in Alaska and subsequently moved to Seattle. If you are interested, I will check some of my mother's old address books from the 1940s-50s. If I remember correctly, Lennart was a signalman on the Great Northern Railway in Seattle for more than 25 years. We visited them several times in the 1940s-50s until Hilma died.

Thanks for your message.

My grandmother's name was Jenny Sofia Johansen. She was born in Smoland in 1884, one of four daughters: Hilma, Josephine and Ingrid. She may have had a brother. She became an orphan when her mother died in 1896 (her father died a few years earlier)and spent several years in Malmo working to save for passage for her 12-year-old sister Hilma and herself. She immigrated from Malmo, Sweden, about 1898 to Montreal, Canada, and the following year moved to Portland, Oregon, where she spent several years as a domestic servant while her sister went to school and boarded with a nearby family. About 1901, she travelled to Alaska where she worked in various mess halls in mining camps and then set up her own "cook tent"--a chuckwagon on skids--to follow the miners from one gold strike to another. In Ester Creek, Alaska, she met my grandfather, David Strandberg, from Halland in Sweden. They had a rocky courtship--in which my grandfather in frustration threw a knock-out diamond engagement ring into the Chena River after her fifth refusal--and were married March 31, 1906. They had six children. They moved the family to Anchorage in 1922 where they bought a small hotel and converted it into their home--now the site of the Captain Cook Hotel. I lived with my grandmother until her death in 1951. My grandfather and his children mined gold along the Kuskowim River until 1956. One cousin, Sigvald Strandberg who lives in Fairbanks, still mines the family claims there.
I know that my grandfather has relatives in Pennsylvania, but I have no knowledge of any of my grandmother's relatives other than those of her sister. I seem to recall some mention of a brother who either died young or with whom my grandmother lost contact when he was young.
Hope this helps.
Regards,
Kathleen (nee Doheny)Hennessey

My father was Ray William Johansen born in Woolford, Alberta (10 miles from Cardston,Alberta.) My grandfather was John Albert Johansen born in Utah and homesteaded to Alberta in 1905. My Grandmother was Nellie Nielson from Fairview, Utah. John Johansen was the quarter back on the Brigham Young Academy 1897 football team. I think that somewhere along the line we are related but not that closely. My ancestry is from Sweden, Denmark and England.

Can you give any other information about Peder? Did he come with a wife or children, and if so, their names? Did your family know what state he intended to go to? Any idea what kind of occupation he would have had? I can do some searching for you from this end if you have a little more information. I am at brick walls on my family and love ancester hunting!

I am missing a Johansen line, but in Norway! My grandfather, Jens Martin Johansen b. March 1874 came here around 1900, married, had children, and died in a logging accident in 1914. I would love to find descendants of his family in Norway, but am not sure where he came from. My mother thought Stevanger, but not sure. His father was Johan Andersen, and I think someone in his family was "Andrea" as he named his daughter after her. He had a brother, possibly named "Jorgen" who was in New South Wales Australia when Martin died, and Jorgen supposedly died about 1950. Can't find any info on Jorgen either. I didn't think to ask the right questions of my uncle, who might have known, and he died in 1971.

Let me know if I can help,
sarah
