Looking for Richard Heezen Johns of Greensboro, NC

I'm an author looking for relative of the late Bruce Charles Heezen (born in Vinton, Iowa). He had a cousin named Richard Heezen Johns, born Sept. 14, 1929, son of Caroline Heezen and Clarence Johns. Caroline died in 1951, and Richard was alive as of then, but I've not been able to track him down concretely after that.

Anything would help! Thanks very much.

I notice you have stated in your post that the Johns name is from Scotland and Wales. My mother was a Johns from Wales where the name is very common, however, the name Johns is quite rare in Scotland. If you check the census and births information on the Scotlands People website you can see this is so.

I viewed the message sent by eelliott991 regarding Johns family from Fannin County. My Grandfather came from Edmonson County, KY to Fannin County, his name was William Smith Johns. My father was also born there, his name was William Macon Johns. I identify the message as names in our tree, except there was one more child name of William, also. Glad to see this, we may be related.

Hi there, Looking for more information, decendents of Zacharias Johns and Ann Webb. His son Zacharias and Catherine (Dawe) Johns came to Australia settling in Moonta South Australia. They had 9 children Zacharias Johns Jnr being one of them. I would love to know more about the Johns family in America and Cornwall and appreciate any information you might have on them. Zacharias Johns Jnr was born in Usa, along with his brother John Dawe Johns, maybe Samuel Johns too. Zacharias Jnr died in Bendigo Victoria Australia in 1927. They had a large family. It has been a while since you posted this.

I have that Francis Alfred Jay was born 1875 in St. Veep, Cornwall and I believe he was killed in the Battle of Jutland (1916). Does this sound familiar?

I've only recently discovered that I have two links to the JAY family through Emma JAY b.1863, which was Francis' aunt.

I'd be very interested in sharing information with you.

Regards,
Luke

Re: Sarah "Sally" John [1771-?] and Thomas John [1500-?]

I have a Sarah "Sally" Johns, b. 1771, in Amherst Co, VA, daughter of Robert and Mary Gresham Johns. I have found her husband, Fleming Hall Duncan, m. 17 Oct 1795. They had 12 children. I have the book with the marriage register in it. Robert Johns was the son of William and Judith Gaithright Johns.
It is told that Mary Gresham was a Monacan Indian, but one of the Johns researchers has disproved that to his satisfaction. I have a question that maybe Mary Gresham's mother was a Monacan Indian. Several of the Johns were listed as mulattos, because of a census worker at the time. The book "Strangers In Their Midst" by the LeRoys describes that situation.
This may not be your Sarah, but it is the one you are describing, other than the marriage. There were probably two, and this may help you sort out the two.
If I can help further, please ask. Donna Reynolds DiPesa

This is the first signs I have had onJoseph Johns. All I know of Keams is Hannah born abt 1815 maybe France? died on christmas Eve. Do you think that there is a connection? You maybe 2 generations ahead of me? I am all at St Austell/Trewoon/Mevagissey.
Added to Mary Williams by bEVERLEYCHAPPLE60 on 21 Jun 2009
From the information you sent I have been able to find the correct marriage. The couple were married in the September quarter of 1864 in St Austell district. I have also identified the correct family in Trewoon in the 1871, 1861, 1851 and 1841 census In 1861 Richard is widowed an Iron miner born abt 1811 all the family are living at TREWOON there are children Mary aged 20 (this collates with the information you gave about the age at her marriage) she is housekeeper Thomas aged 16 he is an Iron miner Emily aged 13 Maria aged 11 Ellen aged 9 Amelia aged 6 Julia aged 3 In 1871 census Richard is living in St Austell with what appears to be a new wife Elizabeth aged 54 and just daughter Julia now 13. By 1881 I think he may be dead or emigrated In 1851 Marys mother is alive and named as Hannah. Also on this census Maria is named as Maria Keam Williams. In 1841 Mary is 4 months old I am fairly confident that Richard WILLIAMS married Hannah KEAM in the Sept quarter 1839. Having done further research I have found that Hannah died on Christmas day 1858 and Richard on 30 Sept 1877 They do appear to have a headstone. I hope this is useful to you Thank you for using our service. Kind Regards Ann Hicks Volunteer Researcher CFHS

In the Amherst Co, VA Heritage Book, created by the genealogy or history society, there is a two plus page article about the Monacan Indians.
It states: "That Robert Johns patented land in 1758.That he was an ancestor of the modern Monacan nation, having married an indian woman.
1790, William Johns, listed as a "freeman of color" married Molly Evans. William Johns was sometimes called "Portugue" because of his broken English.
In 1831, William Johns purchased 52 acres of land on Bear Mountain. In 1833, he bought another 400 acres and this land became a settlement for the indian families related to him. In 1856, Will Johns divided his lands among his sons and daughters. Five years later, at the age of 91, he died."
The article has more information concerning the Monacans.

I have no idea if this book is still available for purchase.
The West Virginia Genealogical Society library has a copy. For any one interested in reading the entire article, I can copy and mail.

Esther B Warner

Sarah and Richard were married 05/14/1791 in Campbell County, Virginia.

Someone also stated that Sarah was a mulato, which either means that she was either mixed with Native-American or African-American. I was wondering if someone can please tell me if Sarah "Sally" Johns are connected? And if Sarah "Sally" was either half White and half-Native-American or half-White and half African-American?

Thanks In Advance,
K.Chris Vickery
