I am trying to trace my fathers ancestry. I can go back as far as my Great-grandfather. His name was John Maxwell Johnstone. He was born in 1846/1847 in the Parish of Barony, Lanarkshire Scotland, to John and Margaret Johnstone. He had two brothers. Alexander resided at Clan Villa Harold's Crop, Dublin, Ireland. Ronald resided at Donoughmore, County Tyrone, Ireland.
John Maxwell Johnstone married Anna Rosina Camies, Dec. 25, 1869 in Holy Trinity Church, Winton, Southampton and they had 11 children (Jane Louisa Margaret, Frederick Henry, John James, Anne Beatrice, George Seymour, Maxwell Rupert, Margaret Musgrove, Ronald, Christina Laura, Edward Musgrove and Sidney Herbert Camies).
After retiring from the Army he settled at 11 Maida Vale, Mutley, Plymouth Devon. He died Aug. 17, 1894 and is buried there. His younger children were sent to be raised by relatives in Ireland. George (my grandfather) and Sidney were sent to Aunt Minnie Stapleton in Drumglass, Christina and Anne to an aunt in Dublin, Ronald and Max to Tyrone County. Their mother, who was ill herself went to live with her eldest daughter, Jean, at Brighton and died July 14, 1895.

Re: Benjamin Johnstone of Spittal

Thanks for the prompt reply. The information that I have on Benjamin Johnson was that he was the son of James Johnson and Mary Hills of Spittal. However I have been unable to find his baptism nor have I been able to find the baptism of my gg gfather Michael Johnson in the same year so it would seem that there are missing baptisms around that time. He is at home in Upper Street, Spittal in 1841, a seaman aged 49 with wife Barbara (47) daughters Mary (13) and Margaret (7) and son Joseph (4). I have a record of Margaret's baptism at Tweedmouth Parish Church on 07 Sep 1834 when Benjamin was shown as a fisherman. He is away from home in 1851 and I have a note from the Spittal Manor Books that Benjamin, husband of Barbara was deceased in 1853.
If you would like to contact me at caselaw05@yahoo.co.uk I can furnish you with more detail on the Johnson/Hills family.

Regards, Tom Johnson

Yes, Tom, I am still looking for Benjamin's family. The information I already posted on Benjamin and Barbara is all I have on them. It would be very kind of you to share information on them. My line continues with their daughter Mary who married James Leighton. James and Mary had about 9 children

Barbara who married Hugh Robertson

Robert who died at age 9

Benjamin who migrated to Australia and marred Janet Bisset

James who married Isabella Patterson

Robert who was born and died in 1864 (it was common to name a new child for a deceased child

Margaret Jane who died at age 1

a boy who migrated to Canada

Catherine McGregor who married Robert Patterson

Jessie who married Henderson
Hi Dylantexas,
many thanks for your reply and info about your JOHNSTON family members. My great, great grandfather was JOHN JOHNSTON and they came from Cootehill, Cavan, except that they seemed to keep moving backwards and forwards to Scotland as well. I've managed to find a couple of the brothers in the 1901 census living in Scotland but as for the rest there is no trace so far. They also changed the spelling of their surname from JOHNSTON TO JOHNSTONE during the time they were living in Scotland. Thank you so much for the links as well, I will most certainly use them. I also have another mystery with the name of MARGARET COWAN, she went over to South Africa with my grandmother, but there was a 30 odd year age difference between them, so I don't know if she was family, a nurse or a chaperone. All I know about her was that she was born on the 5th October (probably 1840)I don't know where she came from, where she was born or why she accompanied my grandmother to South Africa.
Best of luck with your research
Norah

hi, I am to researching the Johnston family on my mother,s side all the names Thomas,William,Annie, and the name Chambers, was mention when I was quite young, when my aunt was alive. My Mum was a Johnston, her Father was William Johnston, born 1891, her grandfather was Robert Johnston born, about 1870, they all lived around the Shankill area in Belfast, Antrim. Then there was Thomas Johnston, my Great Grandfather, who may of live, ANTRIM or DOWN.This should give you some info, and it,s free. www.askaboutireland.ie it will give you the griffith- valuation sites where everyone lived in 1861 just type in name and guess, say were you think they would of lived like antrim or down ect... it will even tell you how much rent they paid. Another free site, www.thenationalarchives.ie it will give you ireland,s 1911 census and tells you what belfast was like then. Best of luck dylantexas.

What is the earliest census you have found James snr on?.

Have you his marriage cert?

If you have that then you will have his father's name and occupation. If you can't find him on an English Census then it might be worth asking for a lookup of the scottish census or doing it your self on Scotland's People (pay-per-view)

Unfortunaletly JOHNSTON and it's variants is very common in Scotland!

Please can anyone help - i am really stuck on the two James' !!
I have found them in 1901 at 60 Forth street,Kirkdale,Liverpool (with some family missing!) but cannot find them earlier - James senior is listed as 63 years old (1901) and James jr as 19,sister Margaret as 22 and sister Francis as 25.
James sr is listed as being widowed and a engineers labourer born in scotland.I have now managed to work out that his wife was Margaret (possibly Shankland).
My question is where in Scotland did James snr come from?
And what happened to James jnr? James jnr married Maria Bundred in 1910 in liverpool and i cannot find any further record of him - I do know he was not around by the end of the 40's but cannot seem to trace his death - please help as i have been trying to find out for the last 3 years!
Thank you
Debbie

JOHNSTONE/JOHNSTON/CHAMBERS from Ireland and Scotland

My great grandfather was THOMAS JOHNSTON born in Ireland and married to ESTHER CHAMBERS in 1865. They had a son WILLIAM in 1866, then moved to Scotland where a son JOHN and daughter ANNIE were born. The family returned to Ireland and ELIZABETH was born in 1871, THOMAS in 1872, JAMES in 1875, SAMUEL in 1877 and HENRY(HENDRY) was born in 1879. The family once again returned to Scotland where my g.grandfather became a coal miner working first in Muirkirk and later in Dalziel. During this time another two children, CHARLES 1884 and SUSAN 1886 were born. At this stage they were spelling their surname JOHNSTONE. My grandfather was JAMES born in 1875, he left scotland immigrating to South Africa where he settled, married CATHERINE MAC DOUGALL from Tyrone. To date I have not been able to trace any of his brothers or sisters, nor any of his wifes family, and would welcome any assistance in tracing what happened to them all.
Hi Catherine, My name is Sue Annett and I was the person looking for relatives - Joseph Young Johnstone (1801) and Margaret nee Lovett Johnstone - we know they had at least one son that came to NZ via Australia - James Lovett Johnstone was married in Melbourne Australia in 1859 to Ann H/Irons. On various Certificates of James Lovett born approx 1826/1832 he has either Romsey, Hants or Kirkcaldy, Scotland as his birth place. I did find a Joseph Johnstone married to a Margaret (Young) Johnstone in Kirkcaldy and wonder if there has been some confusion of maiden names etc. If you have any info that would be great.
Hi Susan,
Thank you for your posting.
You seem to have far more information than I do. I have spent some time going through parish records etc in England, but haven't gotten any research done in Ireland or Scotland.
Those places are next on my research agenda.
I'd really like to talk to you more about where you've searched so far and see where else we could look.
Regards,
Joyce

William Johnstone/Johnston, Scotland to Ireland 1745

Looking for info on William Johnston born in Scotland. He shipwrecked while fishing off the coast of Ireland and landed in Dunany Point, Ireland around 1745. He settled in County Louth, Ireland. He married and had a son named Arthur. Arthur had a son Patrick. Patrick had a son named Patrick. Patrick also had a son named Patrick (born 1844) who immigrated to the US and served in the Civil War. He had a son Patrick (born 1873), my great grandfather, who lived his entire life in Northern New York. Any information on William's spouse, parents or place of origin in Scotland would be greatly appreciated.

Looking for information on the family of Andrew & Margaret (Gibb) Johnstone. Children born/christened in Douglas, Lanarkshire: Andrew 1784, Margaret 1792, William 1796, John 1798, Ann 1800, Maren 1804. Trying to find out whether William is my ancestor who moved to Canada circa 1820. Also wondering whether Margaret Gibb was the sister of Marion Gibb (Mrs. Andrew Torrance) of Ayrshire.
For those experienced with Scottish research, can you please suggest which might be the best resources for me to explore for more information? Thank you for any help!
Marcy

Hi everyone -- Going back to the very first post in this thread...
Quote:
"I am trying to trace my fathers ancestry. Ronald resided at Donoughmore, County Tyrone, Ireland."

I am tracing a John and Margaret Johnstone. John was a labourer who died prior to March 21, 1856 according to their daughter Jane's marriage certificate from Blythswood, Glasgow, Lanark Scotland. Jane's place of birth is listed variously as Scotland and Ireland depending on which census document you look at.

Margaret Johnstone's maiden name was Docherty.

Sound familiar to anyone?

Kind regards, Susan.

Jane Johnstone was born about 1837 in Ireland (possibly Scotland). She married John Wright 21 March 1856 in Blythswood, Glasgow, Lanark, Scotland. She and John emigrated to Boston early 1870's.

Her father, Matthew Johnstone was a labourer, deceased at the time of her marriage in 1856.

I have descendant info for Jane, but not much in the way of ancestors. Does this family line sound familiar to anyone?
Kind regards, Susan.

Hi Edward,
I am your cousin, Beverly Johnstone (Anderson). My father is Samuel R. Johnstone, now 90 years old. His oldest brother was your dad, Gerald Johnstone and his middle brother was Allan. They all lived on 525 Dewey Blvd in San Francisco growing up. I do have a lot more info and I tried to reach you through an email address I found on Roots web but it came back. By the way, when you were a toddler I was a young teenager (12 yrs) so we never really knew each other. Am searching for more info about everyone too. Maybe we can help each other. Searching for info on Johnstone, Mickle, MacKinnon, and McNeil. Grandma Annabelle equally difficult to search lineage. Can not seem to find records in Magdalen Islands (of Nova Scotia, Canada) where was told she lived, but may not have been born.

I'm sorry to take so long in replying. I did not take the privelege of a buying a membership with Ancestry.com, so lost my tree that I'd made. I'd searched and searched and ended up giving up for quite a while. Recently I've been able to get in to this site and just this morning came across a post I'd made, as you can see quite a long time ago. I ended up having to change my name and password.
So it seems your grandfather and my grandfather were brothers.
Do you have any more information that I don't have in there. My grandfather emmigrated to Canada in 1911 I believe. He married and English girl who came out here to join him.

Jeanne

Trying to come up with more information on John Scott Johnstone --who was born in December, 1861 in Castleton, Roxburgh, Scotland to William Johnstone and Elizabeth Scott.
I would like to know if there were other siblings in this family and marriage and birth dates for William and Elizabeth as well as William's parents' names.
John Scott travelled to Canada with Margaret McDonald and they married in Winnipeg, Manitoba March 1, 1886. John Scott and Margaret are my grandparents.
Any help you can supply would be very much appreciated.

Larry.

Re: Johnstone Ancestry

Hi Joyce. My sister Jeanne forwarded your posts to me in the summertime but I've only just got motivated to put it all down on Ancestry. My mum had put all this information down in booklets that I now have in my possession. She had information for both sides of the family and never had the internet to use. Lots of letter writing, asking questions from family and even going to Somerset House on a visit to the UK.
I remember the name Shackleton but didn't know how it connected to the Johnstones until researching more and getting help from members on here. Look forward to the 1911 census now.
Lynda

James William JOHNSTONE married Georgina DICKSON in Dumfries around 1870. His first son James Henry Johnstone was born in Dumfries 11 Sep 1871. He and the family then moved to Belfast, N.Ireland and a daughter Mary was born 14 Sep 1873 in Belfast, followed by Georgina, Charles D. and William.

I believe that James William JOHNSTONE was born in Aberdeen, but have no proof.
Johnson/Johnston brothers 1700's-1800's: Scotland>Ire>SC>NC/VA/PA>AL/KY, and beyond

There is a mystery afoot, and you may have clues to help solve it.

* Did your male Johnson/Johnston ancestor(s) immigrate to America in the first half of the 1700’s from Ireland, possibly from County Tyrone?
* Was the landing site in America possibly Charleston, South Carolina?
* Were there several brothers who crossed the ocean together, but lost track of each other? Various settling places for these brothers include North and South Carolina, Virginia, and Pennsylvania.
* Did the brothers’ names include William, James, or Thomas? There may have been other brothers, too.
* Are there stories in your family that the brothers changed their name when they came to America, from Johnston to Johnson?
* Is there a story in your family that before they were Johnstons/Johnsons, the family name VERY long ago was McEon, McEwan, or some other similarly-sounding name?
* Are there stories in your family that you are descended from Vikings? Or at least Norway, Sweden, or some such location?
* Are there stories in your family that before they were in Ireland, they were actually from Scotland?

Does ANY of that sound familiar to you? How about these questions?

* Are you descended from the William Johnson of Ireland who married Marian Buie of Jura, Scotland?
* Are you related to Marian Buie of Jura, Scotland, and have information about her husband William Johnson?
* Are you descended from the William Johnson who left the 1786 will in Anson County, North Carolina?
* Are you descended from the William Johnson who was associated with the town of Sneedsboro/Sneedsborough, NC?
* Are you descended from a Hugh Johnson from North Carolina who fought in the Revolutionary War, then moved to Christian County, Kentucky, then for a short time in Missouri, and then went to Illinois?
* Are you descended from a Hugh Johnson born circa 1747 in Anson County, North Carolina, who married Elizabeth Thomas born in Newberry County, South Carolina?
* Are you descended from a John Johnson of North Carolina, who married Sarah McDuffie from Jura, Scotland? They went from Cumberland County, North Carolina, to Christian County, Kentucky, to Washington County, Illinois where John died in 1820.
* Are you descended from Christian County, Kentucky, Johnsons? Specifically, those who were there in the very early 1800’s?
* Are you descended from Rev Neill Johnson, b 7 Sep 1802 in North Carolina?
* Are you descended from James Ovelton Johnson, b 21 Nov 1883 in Georgia?
* Are you descended from William R Johnson, b circa 1781 in South Carolina?
* Are you a male surnamed Johnson/Johnston who has DNA haplotype Il*?

Do those questions ring a bell for you? Do you have any information, research, family lines or stories related to these people or questions? Would you be willing to share?

There exists a small, informal group of Johnson researchers who have found a common bond in some of their known family lines, and/or stories, and/or DNA. We are searching for other Johnson researchers who might have pieces to add to this puzzle, either through research or DNA or both. Although no website exists at the moment to centralize communication, the group’s surname page is at:
http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~hjohnson/N...

Let’s work together!
