Re: Joice/Gatlin

Hi Kathy!
I am a Joice, that was my maiden name. I noticed that your message was posted GMT, are you in England? I am in California. I thought for a long time that my family and cousins were the only Joices in the San Francisco Bay Area, but Ancestry.com has shown me that there is a family of Joices (with an i, not a y) in Santa Clara City/County and the city of Hollister. Hollister is south of Santa Clara, but I am not sure what county it is in. Santa Clara is just south of the San Francisco Bay Area. My dad told me there was another family in
San Francisco, but they are not related to us which seems odd because they also spell it with an i. I don't believe that they still live in the area as they are not in the phone book nor Ancestry.

My Great Grandfather Alfred W Joice was supposedly born in Wisconsin, and my Great Grandmother was born in Chicago, Illinois. I can not verify either birth yet, except through census records. Alfred and Margaret had three boys, all born in Chicago. One of those boys is my grandfather (Charles). Margaret's mother, Mary J, immigrated to the US from Canada in 1851; her last name was Kirby. Margaret's maiden name was Whyte, and her father's name was William Whyte, Mary's husband.

My grandfather married Frances Simmons and had three boys, all still alive, and one daughter also still living. All of their children were born in Berkeley, California. One uncle is Richard Joice who has lived in Virginia for the past thirty years. My uncle Donald lives near my dad, Robert E. Joice (RE Joice, he is quite proud of that!!), in the California Gold Country of Auburn and Grass Valley, California. If you are not from our area, this is where gold was discovered in the mid 1800's, leading to major expansion of the West. Ancestry has shown me that another Joice family also lives in the Gold Country, one city near my dad, the other a little farther away, but my dad does not know them. After doing a lot of research
it is hard to believe they are not related because I have found small threads that the families have in common. Some related names due to marriage are:
Lamb (my aunt, also in California); Simmons; Martel (California Gold Country town of Rough and Ready, yes a true name!); Lowe in Pennsylvania (1700's),
and a few others that I will have to look up. There are very few girls in the Joice family throughout the generations.

This is probably way more than you wanted! Sorry, I get carried away!! Right now, I am trying to find Afred's history, and his son that died at 20, John R. Joice. There are so few records on my dad's grandparents. I did find out that Alfred's father was from Ireland and his mother, Eliza Grove, was from England. My dad did say that he thinks one of his relatives from the Isle of Man married a French woman. I did find some info about that but have not delved into it.

I hope this has not thoroughly confused you. Please feel free to contact me directly at: schmidthaus1@comcast.net. I would be happy to share more, or help you research someone. Take care and I look forward to hearing from you.

Sincerely,
Cheryl Schmidt

Hello,
I have been researching the Joices for a couple of years and never imagined that someone else would be, too. I am looking for John (Jack) R. Joice, born 1906 in Chicago, died 1926 in California. I found Alfred W. Joice living in Evanston who died in 1919. This is consistent with my Great-Grandfather. Do you have more information on Joice living in Evanston from 1900 on?

He married Sara Hoben (b. 1810 Ireland, d. 1907 Nevada, Iowa) and they had 13 kids, one of which, Ella R. is my Great-Grandmother. Does anyone have any information on Patrick?--his parents, brothers & sisters, what ship he came over on, birth date, etc.??? I'd appreciate any additional info. as I'm stuck at this point in following my lineage. email me at Ktry8@astound.net if you have facts.

A JOYCE Mystery, Maries Co MO

William L "Leff" JOYCE/JOICE was born 16 March 1850 and died 19 June 1911. He was the son of Elijah and Catherine [MOORMAN/MOMAN] JOYCE/JOICE.

He was married at least twice:

1.] 5 April 1874, in Maries Co, to Eliza Jane JOHNSON.
2.] About 1883 to Eliza Jane [JOHNSON] MOMAN

Confused? Things get worse.

In the census records for 1850, 1860 AND 1870 he is unmarried and living with his parents. So far, so good but…

In the census of 1880 his household includes five children three of whom were born BEFORE the1870 census and BEFORE his 1874 marriage:

Martha A. JOICE Dau 14
John JOICE Son 12
Laura JOICE Dau 10
George E. JOICE Son 4
Belle M. JOICE Dau 2

Not too likely that the first three children belong to his wife as she's only 28 at the time of the 1880 census. Yet they are NOT with their father in the 1870 census NOR can I find them anywhere else in the 1870 census OR in subsequent census records.

"Leff's" second marriage is an estimate based on the census for 1900 [12 years] and 1910 [27y] and conforms to the births of his two surviving children by his second wife [Newt Nov 1885 and Myrtle March 1890]. The second marriage is proven by the obituary of his second wife which states, in part, "After the death of her first husband she was married to Leff Joyce, and to this union were born 5 children, 3 having died in infancy."

My questions:

1.] Can any one identify his first wife Eliza Jane JOHNSON?

2.] Can any one identify the first three JOYCE/JOICE children or their parent[s]?

3.] Can any one tell me what happened to these five children?

I know what I can do to answer these questions but I'm hoping one of you kind folks KNOWS the answer and can help save me loads of time [and $$$] working it all out.

That is about all I know about him except that the spelling was later changed to Joyce. The dates do not seem to indicate that your Peter would have been his brother. Does any of my info fit in with the info you have? Just curious. Barbara
