SAVONA, March 5 - Savona has lost its leading citizen. William E. Joint died Tuesday evening at 8:15 at his home, following a long illness. Funeral services will be held this (Friday) afternoon at 2 o'clock at the house, the Rev Dwight W. Graham, rector of St. Thomas Episcopal church in Bath officiating.
Burial will be in the Seaman cemetery.
Mr. Joint was a leader in Democratic circles in Steuben County, serving for 30 years as a member of the Democratic County Committee. He was one of the oldest members and Past Master of Savona Lodge No. 755 F&AM and a member of the Episcopal Chapel of the Good Shepard.
Mr. and Mrs. Joint celebrated their fiftieth wedding anniversary October 24 1938. There were married Oct 24, 1888 at Sonora by the Rev. John C. Mallory, pastor of Savona Baptist church. Mrs. Joint was formerly Miss Harriet Jessup, of Tyrone.
Mr. Joint was one of the founders and a director of Savona National Bank, and was also founder and former president of Savona Fire Company.
Survivors include his widow an two brothers: Henry E. Joint of Campbell, and Fred C. Joint of Savona; three nieces: Mrs. John Moore, Mrs. Gilbert Scudder of Campbell, Miss Mary Helen Joint of Savona; two nephews: Henry C. and Frederick Joint, both of Savona.
Mr. Joint, senior member of Joint Hardware Company of Savona and Campbell, was born Nov 11 1862, at Jamesport, Suffolk County, the son of Thomas and Marie Ersking Joint.
In his childhood he came to Savona with his parents to make his home and had resided here about 70 years. He entered business at the age of 14 and was first in the employ of George W. Peck, hardware merchant. In 1872 he bought out this business and continued to take an active interest in its management, until his health began to fail. He had been blind for several years, but in spite of this affliction had maintained his hold upon his business, and his interest in his host of friends, enjoying nothing better than a visit with them at his home.
In 1892 Mr. Joint was appointed Postmaster at Savona by president Cleveland and served four years. In 1912 he was again appointed Postmaster, but this time illness prevented his serving. He was a member of Savona school board for five years, served as mayor for some time, and village treasurer for a term, and village president for two years.

Five Hundred Club Plays
The 500 Club met Tuesday evening with Mr. and Mrs. W. N. Shutts. After dinner was served the evening was spent with cards. Mrs. Roger Peters held high score for the women, the men's high score was a tie between Reuben Robie and Harry Joint. Low scores were held by Mrs. Irving Chappell and Mrs. Joseph Horton. Next meeting will be held with William Wagner and daughter, Cora, Tuesday evening, December 10.

BATH, NY - Dr. Frederic Thomas Joint, 85, of 7204 Apple St, died on Tuesday, May 16, 2006 at home following a brief illness.
She was born July 26 1919 in Savona, NY the eldest son of Fred Carson Joint and Cora Helen Butts.
He graduated from Savona Central School in 1936 and Cornell University with a B.S. in physics in 1941.
He was a Commissioned officer in the US Navy from 1941 to 1946, serving in both the Atlantic and Pacific theaters during WWII, and was discharged with the rank of Lieutenant Commander. He was a 1950 graduate of the University of Rochester Medical School and, after a year of general practice, went on to complete a residency in radiology at the University of Rochester-Strong Memorial Hospital in 1956. He was the radiologist at Ira Davenport Memorial Hospital from 1957 until his retirement in 1991.
He was a member of the First Presbyterian Church of Bath and the Rotary Club of Bath, as well as numerous other organizations.
Fred was an avid horseman, hunter, and fisherman.
In addition to his medical practice, Fred ran the family farm in Savona, NY for years, first as an active dairy farm, then beef cattle farm, then a horse farm.
In his retirement he provided loving home care for his invalid wife, Eleanor Backus Joint, who passed away in 2002 after 54 years of marriage.
He is survived by his three daughters; Nancy E. Joint of Bedford Hills, NY, Carolyn M. (Edward vanB.) Mitchell of New Gloucester, Maine; and their children, John D. and Elizabeth E. Mitchell and Katherine B. (Anthony N.J.) Vecchiarelli of Baldwinville, NY; and their children, Nicholas T., Christopher M., and Lana J. Vecchiarelli and his son with whom he lived, William B. (Melissa M.) Joint and their children Keith M. (Courtney), Steven T. and Michael D. Joint.
He is also survived by his sister, Mary Helen Joint of Savona, NY and his sister-in-law, Barbara McCorkle of Lawrence, Kansas and five niece and nephews and their children.
Friends may call at Fagan's Funeral Home in Bath on Friday, May 19th from 3 -5 pm and 6 - 8 pm. Funeral services will be held at the First Presbyterian Church of Bath on Saturday, May 20th at 2pm with the Rev. Douglas A. Madden officiating.
Burial will b in Seaman's Cemetery in Savona, NY at a later date.
