I'm pretty much stuck here. I have lots of info on his son, Elijah H Jolliffe, but absolutely nothing on his father Joseph or his mother, name unknown. I know that Jospeh was born in Virginia but I don't have a date or a place. Any info would be great.

Hello Mary Lou. It's nice to meet you too! I don't know if there still is a Cornish Venning Picnic. Isabel Bruce Venning was my great great grandmother and passed away 1925, Her grandmother was Mary Ann Cornish and she passed away in 1885. I know my grand father Vic Rowse spent a lot of time with his second and third cousins growing up. The only specific picnics I can remember from my childhood were the Rowse and Cole ones.

Sorry to hear your Dad passed away. My Dad was Elmer Miller of Putnam and he passed away in Sept 2004. Him and my Mom and brother are buried together in the Dorchester Union Cemetery. There are over 60 Cornish people buried there also.

Grand baby just woke from her nap. I'd love to chat more later

Alethea

It's nice to meet you, Alethea. I wish my father were still alive as he would be tickled pink to know that I had connected with a relative of Ernie Rowse. He always spoke warmly of him. My Dad passed away three years ago.

Yes, my Aunt Hazel and Uncle Wes lived in Harrietsville. I know Lake Whittaker and the old concession 4 well. That lake was so much a part of my father's life growing up. Like you, I wish I had taken notes when he was relating stories about the people and events of his early years there.

The Peter and Paul you speak of weren't direct descendants of my Aunt Hazel and Uncle Wes. Perhaps they were descendants of one of Uncle Wes' family. I know he had at least one brother and possibly more who lived in that area.

I knew Thomas James had a sister named Mary Ann who married a Venning. Is there still a Cornish-Venning picnic being held? It seems to me there used to be one held in the Ingersoll area for a number of years.

I will see if I can scare up a copy of Cora Leaman's genealogy for you. Having moved twice in the last five years, I'm afraid I can't even tell you where my own copy is. I'm sure it's here somewhere. If I can't find it, I'll see if anybody else in the family can lay their hands on theirs. Mary Lou

Hello again
No I haven't seen Cora Leaman's info from 1967. It would be of great interesgt to me as Thomas James is my 4th great grand uncle. One of his son's, also named Thomas, married a Venning which is another line from Middlesex county I am related to. Andrew Venning b 1804 and Mary Ann Cornish b. 1810 both in England are my 4th great grandparents.

Ernie Rowse was brother to my grandfather. He was a fantastic piano player. He was a Grand Musician of the Grand Lodge of Ontario. Ernie and his wife Elsie had a farm just north of Lake Whittaker on Harrietsville Dr. (used to be concession 4 in North Dorchester Twp.) on the dead end right at the top of the lake. When he retired from farming they lived across from the High School in Aylmer, ON. Do you and your dad still live in the area? When I married I moved 2 hrs away from where I grew up.

Was your Aunt Hazel of the Jackson's around Harrietsville? There was a Peter and Paul when I went to school.

regards
Alethea

Yes, you have all five of the children of Emerson Wesley Cornish and Mary Elizabeth (nicknamed Minnie) Gilbert correct. All of them are gone now.

Minnie died in the Spanish flu epidemic that swept around the world in the aftermath of World War One. She was only 39 years of age. Her youngest child, Frank, was only two and a half.

Later, my grandfather re-married and had five more children. One of them (Carman Cornish of London, Ontario) recently updated the entire Emerson Wesley Cornish family tree. Would that be of interest to you?

Cora Leaman did a family tree from Thomas James Cornish on down back in 1967. Have you seen it? I doubt it is still available and, of course, many, many more descendants have arrived since then. However, I expect Carman has his genealogy on his computer and it would be possible to get that from him if it's of interest to you. He charges a small fee for it. I can't remember how much exactly, but it wasn't an outrageous sum.

I have heard my father speak of the Rowse family. If I remember correctly, he talked of Ernie Rowse a great deal. Have I got that name right?

Thank you for that obituary of John Wesley Cornish. I had not seen that before. I recognize the Facey and Sadler names. I recall my father and my Aunt Hazel speaking of them, too.

Hello again
I have Emerson Wesley married to Minnie Gilbert on 14 Oct 1903. Please let me know if I have all their children
Hazel Belle married Wesley Jackson

Harold Wesley

Margaret Jane

William Gilbert

James Franklin Borden married C. Grace Jolliffe
children:
Kathleen and Mary Lou
That is all I have on them. My grandfather (Victor Rowse) knew many of the Cornish family in Middlesex, Oxford and Elgin Counties. He talked about his relatives all the time, I just wish now he had wrote some of his information down. do you have John Wesley's obit

WESLEY CORNISH DIES AT THE AGE OF 83 YEARS Buried in the Dorchester Union Cemetery Harrietsville – A number of Harrietsville attended the funeral of the late Mr. Wesley Cornish, at his home near Belmont. Mr. Cornish was a former resident of this community, having lived on the farm now owned by his son, Emerson Cornish, until he moved to Belmont. He was 83 years of age and is survived by his invalid wife, three sons, Messrs. Emerson of Harrietsville; William of Belmont, and Albert of London, and one daughter, Mrs. W. Maddison of Mimico. Another daughter, Mrs. Charles Secord predeceased him six years ago. The service was conducted by Rev. Osbourne of the Belmont United Church. The casket was borne by Messrs. Wilbert Facey, Roy Ferguson, Earl O’Neil, R.E. Wilton, Wilford Sadler and Moulton Morris. Interment was made in Dorchester Union Cemetery.

Martin and Daniel would be my 1st cousins 5 times removed according to the PAF program I use. Which one of John Wesley's children do you descend from?

James Orlando Jolliffe and Lucy Clement were my great-grandparents. Their son, Harley Grey Jolliffe, was my maternal grandfather.

Interestingly, I am also related to the Clements by marriage on my father's side of the family. Daniel Porter Cornish, the one who married Hannah Clement, was a brother to my great-grandfather, John Wesley Cornish, son of Thomas James Cornish.

I do believe there was another Clement girl who married another of my great-grandfather Cornish's brothers (there were 13 children, 12 growing to adulthood) in the family. I would have to get out the family tree to tell you who it was. If interested, do let me know.

Good morning fellow Clement researcher,

Fortunately, ancestry.com monitors this message board for me, even after all this time. :-)

Yes, I still continue to research my ancestry including the CLEMENTs in Middlesex and Elgin. I have been doing so for about 10 years now. I have also made contact with folks in the Nebraska USA and New Zealand branches of this family. It's a small world.

So, I would love to exchange information with you on the Elgin/Middlesex branch of the CLEMENTs. They are "my" branch.

Please e-mail me directly: ncooper2@aol.com

I look forward to hearing from you.

Nancy (Clifford) Cooper
Orlando, Florida, USA
(but born and raised in Middlesex County, Ontario, Canada)

No - it's my husband who is descended from UGLOWs ....

His GR GR grandmother was Ann UGLOW who had married Thomas HOOPER.

Ann UGLOW was b 1797, d/o Edward UGLOW & Margery HOSKYN.

I always thought it was such an unusual name until I started doing research and discovered it's extremely common, especially in Cornwall.

Have you seen the wonderful research site put together by Steve UGLOW at www.uglow.co.uk??

I think Robert did remarry. I think he is listed in the 1910 US Census, Michigan State, Wayne County, District 5, Detroit City; Enumeration District 115, Page 16. (indexed as Jalliffe, Robert in via Ancestry but the actual record is clearly Jolliffe) He is married to a Carrie J. and it states that it is the second marriage for both of them. If I am reading the census record correctly they have been married for 10 years (m. Abt. 1900) and that Carrie J. has never had or at least has not had any children with Robert. The immigration date is very hard to read so it is difficult to tell when he arrived in Detroit. The immigration dates for Bertha and Veta (c. 1900) and boys (George Sidney & Percy Alfred (while living/visiting with Emma) (c. 1920) consistently indicate 1897.

By the way, my wife is a descendant of Benjamin Jolliffe. I have been working at figuring out the descendants of James Jolliffe & Frances Chiverton for about 8 years now. It is good to find another link.

Hello Nancy

I was also born and raised in Middlesex County, Ontario. I grew up in Putnam and went to High School in Dorchester. Most of my family still live in the area (Putnam, Crampton, Avon, Mossley, Harrietsville).

I have a few links.
Edward Harmon DAFOE and wife Mary Ann(e) CLEMENT had a daughter Merle Maria DAFOE who married Orrie FERNS (also last name Bustin?). Orrie was the son of Asa Ferns and Sarah Ann COLE. She was a sister to my Great Grandparents Samuel COLE JR. and Ethel Roxanna MURPHY.
Orrie was raised by his Grandparents like a son after his mother died.

Hannah Maria CLEMENT married Daniel Porter CORNISH.
Thomas James Suiter Long CORNISH married Mary Esther VENNING

Mary Ann CORNISH married Andrew VENNING. They are my Great Great Great Great Grandparents through their son Richard and Barbara (Mair) then their daughter Isabella Bruce Venning who married John L. Rowse. Their son Edwin, his son Victor my mom and me

I am in the process of putting what I have on a PAF program and I have a ways to go on getting connection straightened out.

a_j_m_@hotmail.com

Thanks for your reply. I have looked at the Hampshire records as her father continued to live there and was awarded custody. None seems to match though. Also her father re-married and was said to "have no children". My suspicion is that her aunt or another relative took her in. I know too that she did not return to her mother.

There are 4 marriages for around the time that Ethel would have been 21, mainly in the south of England, on FreeBMD - could she have returned there to marry ?
There are no deaths for Ethel Jolliffe on FreeBMD
Regards
Sheila

Hi Everyone,

I'm trying to research my family line but have come to a dead end with the above Gentleman, Thomas Jolliffe, born about 1797, possible in Shaftebury, Dorset. He was married in 1822 at Cerne Abbas to Elizabeth Galpin. They had several childres, Robert, Eliza, Emily(??), Frances, Thomas and Caroline. They all moved to Wales prior to 1841 where they lived, I beieve in Usk, Monmouthshire. Any information anyone may have to enable me to connect Thomas to any of his Ancestors will be greatly appreciated.

David Jolliffe
Pontypool
Wales
