Thank you so much - I'm so excited. I would love to know anything you know about Pauline. If you wish to communicate outside of this post, you can also email me at kettner.emily@gmail.com. If you know anything especially about her adult life and death, myself and family would be especially interested. This may sound strange...but my family may own something that once belonged to her...

I'm looking for anyone who has any information about Julius Jonas, who would have been shot in Chicago by his lover, Pauline Meglitsch in 1920. His wife was Sarah Jonas, sister to Leo Feist? It's VERY important that I find any living relatives or information - does this sounds familiar?

Frank L. Jonas later Jones

My great grandfather changed his name from Jonas to Jones, but the rest of the family stayed Jonas (one brother was Bill Jonas, probably William). I'm trying to find any information on this Jonas family in Chicago. He also had a family before mine, with 2 children, Ed and Mildred with an unknown woman he later divorced in Chicago. The children were likely born in the 1890s. He was Catholic so this was a rare move. I can't seem to find any early divorce records in Cook County.

Thank you for replying to my post. My Jonas branch came from Minnesota to LaCrosse, Wisconsin in the mid to late 1800's. The info you gave in your response dosen't look familiar, but you never know. They were practically neighbors. Vernon Co. is just a stones throw from LaCrosse. I have a public tree with what I have found so far on the Jonas's in Wi and Mn. Feel free to have a look and see if anything matches up. Do you have a tree online that I could look at? I got most of the info from my grandmother Catherine (Peterschmidt) Jonas. Spouse of Harry Louis Jonas. I am kind of stuck before his grandfather Frank born in Germany. Thanks, Randy

I don't recognize the Loeffler name but my Jonas line was in Vernon, Wisconsin. There are a few of them buried in the Viroqua Cemetery in Vernon County, Wisconsin. This was in the mid to late 1800's. Let me know if any of this means anything to you and I will share what I have.

Hi Sid, I'm going over all of my information, trying to document everything I can, in the hopes that it will break a few bricks in the wall. Do you know if the Livingston county Marriage and will books are available online? I'm still trying to document Sarah Van Winkle Jonas, I have found William Henry Jonas's Death certificate if you don't already have it. As I said the first time I contacted you, my grandfather was (Oscar) Clinton Jonas. I'm not even sure that the Oscar was really his name or not, my mom always said it was, but her birth certificate lists him as Pete! (She says that was just his nickname--How you get Pete from Oscar or Clinton I do NOT know!) I have not found her yet in either the 1860, 1880, or 1890 censuses.

Martha B. Jonas marries Pierce

Martha B. Jonas, daughter of Joseph Jonas & Charlotte Hill, is listed as divorced and living with her sister in the 1900 Franklin Co, NE Census. She and her daughter are listed with the surname of Pierce. As such, Martha was obviously married to a man named Pierce, but I've been unable to locate any records on-line. If anyone has access to Nebraska records, I'd appreciate knowing the groom's name and wedding date for Mr. & Mrs. Pierce.

1900 census says --

Justice Precinct 1, Jack, Texas

James Jonas 50
Caroline Jonas 49 (Attebury -- not sure of correct spelling)
Charles W Jonas 26
John T Jonas 21 <-- Is this Floyd's grandpa?
Annie M Jonas 18
Dona J Jonas 16 [my grandma]
Henry N Jonas 13
Stephen C Jonas 11
James O Jonas 8
R A Hubert Jonas 5

1850 Pike Township, Perry County, Ohio census says --

John Jonas 43 Maryland
Lydia " 31 Pennsylvania
Gary " 12 Ohio
Rachel " 10 "
Harriet " 8 "
William J " 6 "
Jesse " 4 "
Lucy " 2 "
James " 10/12 " [ours]

========================

I believe it was a Thomas Jonas my mother used to write all the time -- he lived in California. I am not sure which of her Uncles moved to California back in the 1930s but I know one of them did. I think Thomas was one of her cousins. He and mom wrote back and forth quite a lot about genealogy, but I still have that in a folder unopened since she died back in 2002. I will look into those lettrs agaiin real soon. I don't think there was a lot though -- I forget.

I DO remember mom mentioning a "Floyd Jonas" -- I think she mentioned that he was her cousin?? From what you said maybe 2nd cousin?

Dona Jerusha Jonas married George Washington Plaster and they moved to Tillman County, Oklahoma Territory early in the 20th century. Another Jonas came with them -- Mom's Aunt Annie with everal families of Kinders -- 4 brothers. Great Aunt Annie and 2 Plaster girls (grandpas sisters) married Kinder boys and they all came up to Tillman County, Oklahoma from Jack County, Tx about the time the Great Pasture land lottery opened up a portion of Comanche lands for White settlement, around 1906.

I still live in Southwestern Oklahoma. There used to be a Jonas family reunion in Jack County and I recall attending it a few times when I was a boy, probably 40 or 50 more years ago. :)

Vance Hawkins

I too am descended from James Newton Jonas.

My mother's maiden name was Louise Plaster, and her mother's maiden name was Dona Jerusha Jonas, daughter of James Newton Jonas. His father was John Jonas, b. 1807. James was a child in New Lexington, Perry Co, Ohio. At some point after the Civil War I think, James N Jonas went to Jack County, Tx. 1850 census record says John was b. Maryland, 1870 census says b. Penn. 1880 census says b. Tenn. I think the earliest one, when he was youngest and it was fresher in his mind, is "probably" more apt to be correct than the others.

Am not certain of his father. My mother used to write some relative in California and he had a lot of information. I have their correspondence. I'll try to dig into it -- finally starting to research my mother's side of the family. :)

Vance Hawkins

August Jonas Neustadt Thuringia (Germany)

I am interested in hearing from anyone with a connection to the Jonas family from Neustadt, Thuringia (Germany). The family possibly migrated to Mecklenberg-Schwerin in the mid to late 1840's.

The information I have is August Jonas along with his wife and 2 children, ages 3 and 1/2 emmigrated to America.
They travelled on the ship "Vorwarts" which sailed on 15 June 1852 heading for the port of Quebec.

The place of birth of this August is listed as Neustadt, Thuringia.

----------------

I have been able to trace my August Christian Theodor Jonas to Kittendorf Mecklenberg Schwerin.

According to his declaration of intent, he was born in 1817 and landed in the Port of Buffalo in August 1852.

From birth records in Kittendorf at the time of emmigration in 1852, he had a son (Johann Friedrich Wilhelm Theodor Schroeder Jonas (he was born out of wedlock), 3 years old, and a son (Johann Christian Theodor) 6 months old.
He married Auguste Maria Sophia Schroeder Nov. 8, 1850 in Kittendorf.

I am trying to find a match between the family in Mecklenberg and the August Jonas in Thuringia, but I have been unable to find the connection to Thuringia (if it even exists).

It just seems like too many coincidences for this ship record not to be my August. Considering the fact there were few ships travelling from Hamburg that early.

Anyone out there with additional information?

Grandfather Frederick Arthur Jonas

My name is Lisa Marie Jonas. I'm 36 and have been trying to find any info about my grandfather. He could of been born in the late 1800's and died around 1963 in California. He was married to my grandmother, Doris Margaret Jonas. Maiden name Ross. When my father was born in 1949 they lived in Mojave, CA. Then moved to Bakersfield, CA. I know my grandfather had another family in Whitier, CA. The only info I have on them is there were 2 daughters older than my father. My grandfather died when my dad was maybe 13. My grandmothers family rarely spoke of him due to the fact he left them and my granparents fought alot. If anyone out there has any info, please leave a message. If I have family out there somewhere, I'd like to know or meet them. I also have a 16 year old son and we would like to know who we came from. Thank you, Lisa M. Jonas
