Good Day Annie:

To answer your question, I am a Joncas specialist, my beloved mother, that left us 7 weeks ago, was Andrée Joncas Fragasso.

We are not closely related to Théodule. The First Joncas Pierre (1644-1717) had one son Pierre Joncas (1673-1704) that accidently died in a bear trap.

The latter had three sons Pierre Joncas (1697-1775), Joseph Joncas (1701-1762) and Jacques (1704-1782).

Roughly 70% of the North-American Joncas are descendants of Pierre (I'm one of them), 15% are descendants of Joseph Joncas widespread in Gaspé area and 15% are descendants of Jacques numerous in the Kamouraska-Témiscouata County.

Théodule is one of the latter.

A fact to note is that Jean-François Joncas that was on the roster of the Bengals of Cincinnati in the NFL was another descencant from Jacques. He currently is the head coach of the Cougars of the Champlain College near Sherbrooke, Québec.

Best Regards!

Michel Fragasso
Québec (Québec)
Hello JP,

The person who gave me that information has passed on. I have been doing genealogy for a long time with long gaps in between activity.

I just started the Joncas side. There is only one member of the Alphonse generation still living. That is Herman Joncas, son of Alphonse. He is in his 90's. Alphonse and Louise had 8 living children. I think all but the last two were born in Canada.

Alphonse's daughter Lillian is my mother-in-law. She also has passed. However, the generation of their children are still around and able to be contacted. I have some information from them that I have not placed in order yet.

The children of Alphonse did not know anything about his family short of the information I gave you about Constant, etc. I did find a Registration Card for Alphonse and he lists his birthday as Aug 4 1877 so we are connecting the correct people.

I am trying to set up a My Face page for the Joncas family. When I get it going, I will invite you to join.
I understand there are still some off-spring of brothers or sisters or cousins to Alphonse still in Syracuse. I will make an attempt to contact them.

Thanks Again,
Pat

Hi,

Gaspé is a peninsula at he easter part of the province of Québec. Gaspé is also a town at the eastern tip of the peninsula, it is the start of North America discovery by the French. Grande-Rivière is a town 100 km west of Gaspé. This is where yhe family mentionned was born and living.

If you google Gaspé,Grande-Rivière, you will find everything you need.

The Roman Catholic registers usually indicate parents of bride and groom.

I suppose Marion is for Marianne, Coustas for Constant.

The names are the ones of my great-grand-father family:
Simon born 1869
Constant born 1870, had a son Paul, but not a bishop; also had a daughter named Jeanne
Charles-Louis-Marie born 1872
Marianne-Mathilde born 1873, married Smith, a daughter named Jeanne-Mathilde
Alphonse-Marie born 1878

I noticed that Alphonse and Marie-Louise Ladouceur lost 2 kids at yon age in Ottawa.

Who is Alphonse's daughter who gave you infos?
Does she now more about Simon-Pierre?
Charles-Louis Marie died in 1955in Grande-Rivière. Lived all his adult life in the USA.
Constant, my grand-father died in 1951 in Grande-Rivière.
Marie-Anne-Mathilde (Smith)died in Ontario, Ca.
Uncle Paul died in Québec City in 1991.
Tante Jeanne died in Grande-Rivière in 1989.

Jeanne, Paul, Arthur (my father), Georgette, all lived in NY State in the late 1920s.
Marie-Berthe-Antonia, may aunt, lived in NY City all her life. She died in 1991.

Alphonse's brother, Arthur, was shot to death in Clifton, NY state, on june 1, 1908 in a lumberjack camp by the foreman.

Hope to hear from you.

JP JOncas

Hello JP,

I have just started the Canadian Genealogy, so I am not very knowledgable about French names and Canadian towns. Can you tell me about Gaspe? Is it a town, a district?

The bordering crossing I have for Alphonse dated 1909 lists his birthday as around 1889. A census that I found lists his birthday as Aug 1884. Your Alphonse, 1878, may be too early.

This is a little more information from his eldest daughter.
Alphonse JOncas, Father from Gaspe, Quebec, Lumberjack.
Parent's names unknown. Sisters, Marion Joncas Smith, Brothers Coustas (he may have had a son named Paul who was a Bishop in Gaspe), Simon and Charles. Either Marion or Coustas may have had a daughter Jeanne.

I appreciate any help. How would I go about getting a marriage license for Alphonse and Mary Louise? My guess would be they married in Ottawa - Mary Louise is from there and family talk says Alphonse went there looking for work and they met. Does the Canadian license lists parents names?

Is Gaspe very big and is Joncas a common name? Thanks, Pat

Hi,

It would be interesting to get their marriage.

The only Alphonse I can match for now is Alphonse-Marie son of Joseph Joncas and Mathilda Beaudin, born august 3, 1878 in Grande-Rivière, comté de Gaspé.

JP

Daughters of Anastasia Joncas

Anastasia Joncas was married in 1945 to Julien Porlier in Grande-Rivière, Qc. They had 5 kids. Around 1853, Juien disappeared.
Anastasia was later (1854-55) found in Belledune, N.-B. married to William Doyle. Theay had 4 kids. Her kids with Julien Porlier stayed back in Grande-Rivière until 1861 at least. We do not know anything between 1861 and 1871.

Then The Doyles moved (ca 1883)to the states with 3 kids. One stayed back in Jacquet River, N.-B.

We find one daughter of Anastasia and Juien Porlier, Élizabeth married in 1869 in Dalhousie, N.-B. to Louis-Arcade Leblanc (Jean and Louise-Félixité Cyr. They moved right away to Cascapédia, Qc. until 1880 where they had 6 kids. They moved back to Nash Creek in 1880, where they had at least 3 other kids. Then around 1888, they vanished, prob. migrating to the states.

We find a second daughter of Anastasia and Juien Porlier, Marie-Celina married in 1871 in Dalhousie, N.-B. to John-Baptiste Vien of Lévis, Qc. They moved right away to Lévis where they had at least 9 kids. 3 died very young. After 1884, they vanished, prob. migrating to the states.

In 1919, one Vien daughter, Marie-Emma-Célina went in the states for a short period. She gives for next of kin James Rufus Doyle, her grand-mother's Doyle son of Durham N-B. In 1920, she marries James-Rufus Doyle's son, David-Arthur Doyle in BC, Ca. We are in contact with one of their son in BC who is sending us a photo of Marie-Emma Célina Vien and Marie-Célina Porlier/Poirier.

Would anyone have further informations about the Leblanc and Vien family?

Jean-Pierre Joncas
lltrad@hotmail.com

Hi Lucie,

I might have misled you in saying Joseph was deported. His parents were deported after being married in Port-Royal, Acadie on jan 20 1755. Joseph was born ca 1763 in Boston while in deportation.

His father Charles died in St-Jacques de l'Achigan, Qc. in 1796. I do not have infos on his mother (Osithe Dugas) death. Maybe same place.
I have no source for this.

Joseph moved to Grande-Rivière before 1791 and married Marie-Anne Beaudin in Pabos on sep 12 1791. Witnesses were F. de la Fontaine, Joseph Méthot, Michel Bérault, François Dupuis. Marie-Anne was born (Pierre and Charlotte Dupuis) in Québec or GR on august 20 1767. She was baptised 10 years later in GR.

Do you know where and when Charles and Osithe died?

JP
Hi Lucie, my previous answer stands:

I have a Joseph Béliveau born Boston (deported Acadian) and baptised in l'Assomption, Qc (check the Map). He married Marie-Anne Beaudin in Pabos on sep 12 1791.
I do not have infos on Joseph Béliveau's death and burial. Do you know?????

Marie-Anne Beaudin died in Grande-Rivière on feb 20 1804. She was buried there the next day.

Grande-Rivière parish is named L'Assomption Notre-Dame de la Grande-Rivière.

JP
I am looking for the parents and family of Joseph Joncas. He was born April 5, 1887 or 1889 in St. Louis, Quebec, Canada. He married Catherine Perreault, daughter of Francis Perreault and Angele Cournoyer. Catherine was born about 1877 in Canada.

Joseph and Catherine Joncas were living in Jaffrey, New Hampshire in the 1920 and 1930 census. Joseph died April 1963 in Jaffrey, NH. Thank you.

.

Re: Ile d'orleans - Pierre Joncas -not a root family in Quebec

Pierre Joncas never lived on Ile d'Orleans so therefore would not be included in the "root" families of Ile d'Orleans. Pierre lived across the river on the south bank of Riviere St-Laurent near the town Berthier-en-Bas. His marriage occurred in Ste-Famille because his spouse Jacqueline Boulet was from that parish.

Ile d'orleans - Pierre Joncas -not a root family in Quebec

Hi - Does any one as an explanation for this ??

on a recent trip to Ile d'Orleans, I could not find "Joncas" as a famille souche ("root family") in Quebec.
ref: http://www.iledorleans.com/fra/familles_souches.asp - no Joncas

However, I had read that the first Joncas in North America (Pierre) lived and got married there, in Ste-famille or St-Pierre Parish ("La première trace qu’on en trouve est dans les registres de la paroisse de Ste-Famille de l’Ile d’Orléans, le 8 juin 1612. C’est son acte de mariage. Il était alors âgé de 24 ans et son épouse, Jacqueline Boulé, de 14 ans")

Does any one as an explanation for this ??
thank you -
I had not think of that - That is true, weddings would be in the wife parish most of the time. - I do not know exactly where Berthier en bas is, but it is true that he died in Montmagny (same county), on the south bank of the St-Laurent. Do you have other informations on the family life there ?
