W. J. Joplin, born 1854 Tennessee, and spouse of my Great Aunt Elizabeth Ann Brewer Joplin, has been found. He and "Lizzie" are buried in Cleburne, TX. I viewed your family tree and found the name Wilkinson. Cousins of Lizzie were Wilkinson's living in Henderson County, TN.

Several of W.J. and Elizabeth's children are named for my mother's siblings. One child is name for the step-mother of Lizzie. One child is named for my great grandfather, William Manley Brewer. This, combined with other data, makes it certain that this is my Elizabeth. I found that Great Aunt Elizabeth and W.J. moved from Henderson County, TN to Texas after W. J.'s mother dies. It appears that they traveled with the Meals from Henderson County. I also am sure that W.J. had siblings in Texas before he left Henderson CO, TN. All of my data is on another computer. Please email me if you would like to see photos and/or want additional info. I cannot tie your Wilson County Joplin's to my Henderson Co. Joplin's, but I have not researched this line recently. W. J. states that his mother and father were born in Alabama. Elizabeth is incorrectly listed as a G. C. in the 1910 census. I feel it is a transcription error. We know that Lizzie lived in Cleburne. My grandmother corresponded with her and all photos were made in Cleburne. Lizzie died in 1958. Your work with family photos is most impressive. My email is scovillepolly@comcast.net

Polly, It has been several years since you made your post and I am hoping you have found the answer to your question as it is intriguing.

There are no children with James David "Dave" Joplin & Elizabeth "Betty" Sypes Joplin, old enough to have been from a former marriage in the 1900 census...yet I feel these kids you write of may be related. I'd be interested to know if you have made the connection?

This is so strange because I cannot find another Elizabeth Joplin born in Tenn. and living in the Johnson County area of Texas with the last name Joplin. The birth date is exactly the same. My Elizabeth Ann was the daughter of William and Harriett Ann Abernathy Brewer. The couple divorced in 1877 and Elizabeth "Lizzie" and her two sisters were taken by their father to live in Henderson County, TN from the Carroll County/Henry County area. They never saw their mother again. I have many photos of Elizabeth "lizzie" and her family taken in Texas. A late photo of Elizabeth (possibly in the 1930's) had the photographer's name and city (Cleburne, Texas). I have a family photo of her and there are at least six children in the photo. Some are almost adults. The dresses were ankle length, but I am not sure of the date. I do know that Lizzie moved to Texas at the turn of the century and visited my grandmother several times in Gibson County (Milan, Tennessee). Her son-in-law or son would drive from Texas to do work in the Oak Ridge area of TN and drop Elizabeth at my grandmother's house to visit. I have never found the name of Elizabeth's husband, so I assumed when I found her that it was James. I have a photo of the man. Elizabeth's niece, my mother, is age 88 and tells stories of Elizabeth's visits. My grandmother's name was Mary Ella and Elizabeth and she were very fond of each other. I noted on a census that one of the children had the initils M. E. and it was a girl. I assumed that she honored my grandmother by name her child for her. If this is not my Elizabeth Ann Brewer, then who is the Elizabeth Joplin in Cleburne Texas? Very odd.

The census record you cite is for my great-grandparents & their daughters. My grandmother, James Della, wasn't born until 1902. Her mother, Elizabeth (called Betty) died in 1904. She is buried in Rockwall, Rockwall County, TX. I have not visited her grave, but I have some rough directions.

Elizabeth's maiden name was "SYPES", not "BREWER", so I do not think she is the one you are looking for. However, her maiden name was a point of confusion for several years. The marriage records from Wilson County TN confirm it as, "SYPES".

My mother is still alive and I would like to contact family members.
The 1900 Census found Lizzie in Rockwall, but later photos of her were taken at studios in Cleburne, Texas. 1930 had Elizabeth living with Ottis age 17 listed as a son.

James D Joplin

Home in 1900: McLendon, Rockwall, Texas
Age: 31
Estimated birth year: abt 1869
Birthplace: Tennessee
Relationship to head-of-house: Head
Spouse's name: Elizabeth A
Race: White
Occupation: View image
Neighbors: View others on page
Household Members: Name Age
James D Joplin 31
Elizabeth A Joplin 32
Susie L Joplin 10
Mary E Joplin 8
Mattie H Joplin 6
Cora W Joplin 6.12

E-mail me at polly@emcnashville.com or scovillepolly@comcast.net
She came from Gwinnett County, Georgia, but I have no information on her before Arkansas or After the 1880 Census of Saline County, AR where it lists her as 22 years of age and him as 30 and their two children. Let me know if you have any information on them.
Brenda

I will add them to my program. I would appreciate you keeping in touch with me if you find new information.
I see that you have been doing alot of reache on the Joplin family. I an at a lose to find my husbands grandmothers people. Her name was Myrtle Joplin 1892 TX, her father was John Maynor Joplin 1850 TN. That is all I have been able to find. Myrtle was married to James D. Overmyer in TX and then moved to IN. Myrtle returned to TX and died there as did my husbands father Roy Lee Overmyer. James D. Overmyer is a descendant of John George Overmyer who came to America in 1751. Any information would be greatly appriciated. Thanks, Jean

Melinda was his 3rd wife. He had 4 and had children by all three. He and 4th wife only had 1. He is buried SW of the Mansfield/Kennedale, Texas area near Arlington. She married David Anthony Mason. in 1875, resided in Hamilton County, in Jonesboro, on the county line of Coryell.
In the 1830's-1840's James Gordon was sent from Louisana to MS to live with his uncle Jimmy Joplin after both his parents died. His father's last name was Gordon, do not know the first name of either parent. Assume the Jimmy Joplin was the mother's brother. Their were other children by the father's first marriage. George, Nathan, and John are known children. Jimmy Joplin was supposed to be a preacher at Old Salem Church, in Attala County, or Carrol county. James father was also a Preacher. Would love to find the parents of James. He married Mary Waddell of Attala Co MS. and moved to AR. He died in the Civil War

Jazz Composer Scott Joplin's ancestry

Giles Joplin, Scott's father, was born a slave in North Carolina around 1842. The only Joplin slave owners in NC listed in the 1850 and the 1860 Slave Schedules are in Wake County. Do any of Scott's great nieces or great nephews know the origins of their family surname or where Giles Joplin was born in NC? Has anyone traced Scott's ancestry back to Giles' parents or grandparents?
Thanks for the info.
Heather
