Not sure that this thread is even still open, seeing as it's been years, but ran across it in search on my grandfather, James William Buchan in New York Mill, MN. His grandparents were Judson's and I wanted to touch base, as both names are matching up. Please let me know if this is still an active search.

Hi Mark. I have connected to a Judson family through marriage of one of my Hartman females here in NYC. You mentioned that your grandfather was named after his grandfather "Philip" Judson. I wonder if Philip's middle name was "Mills"? I have a Mills Judson who married my Mary Caroline Hartman. Mills' father was always given as "Philo" - a form of Philip perhaps. I have some information on the family and have the burial place of Philo in NY Marble Cem. My Mary Caroline died very young and is buried in the family plot with her father-in-law, Philo. It is possible Mills remarried but I have not traced him. Mills was mentioned in Mary Hartman's father's will (Lewis Hartman) so they remained friends even after his daughter's demise.

If this sounds hopeful, I'd be happy to help with what little I have.
Linda - NYC

Did you find out yet if your Alfred was related to Gershom or not?

It was not uncommon for a Union soldier to return to the south. My mother was reared by a great aunt in Winnsboro, LA. The great aunt had married a "Yankee" guard around her home, a plantation in Franklin parish. They fell in love during his assignment and after the war, he went North, shipped his belongings (beautiful furniture!) to his steamboat landing (he owned and operated a steamboat) and they lived happily everafter! I have a card from a piece of furniture that says "ship to Caston's Landing", just outside of Winnsboro, a body of water that empties into the larger river south of Winnsboro.

Hi, Cousin. I, too, am descended from Silas Burton Judson. It was interesting to read the bio you posted, as I have just researched the same info recently.

Another of his son's was my great, great grandfather, George Judson. George moved to Michigan, where he cleared the first 10 acres of land in Mundy Township of Genesee County. He came with a man named Morgan Baldwin, and they were the first settlers in 1834 there.

I have traced his lineage back to the original William Judson to come here from England in 1634. He and others founded the town of Stratford, CT, where there is a museum in a house built by his great grandson in 1750. Have you visited there? Subsequent generations settled in Newtown, and some others moved west and southwest.

BTW, the website you listed below was not accessible. Was there an error in it? Being you're from Tenn, which side of the civil war did Gen William fight?

Hewitt Judson

The surname Judson was not uncommon in 14th century Yorkshire.
The earliest mention of this name that I have been able to find was in 1349 and was from the Court Rolls of the Manor of Wakefield.
There were at least 17 Judson's in the Poll Tax Listings of 1379.
There are a number of mentions of this surname from the West Yorkshire Archive Service and from The UK Archive Network, through the century.
Do any of you know of documents that list earlier Judson's?

I have found on the Internet, a reference to Judson's as early as 1349,in a situation which would have meant that the name must have been in common usage as far back as 1330. Has anyone "out there" found an earlier reference?

I am interested in finding out information on George E. Judson who as born in Connecticut on October 19, 1830 and died in Covington county , Mississippi in July 20, 1886. He is buried in the old Williamsburg General Cemetery beside is wife Lucy Coulter. I am researching every grave in the cemetery as a part of the restoration of the cemetery. I have a good bit of information on his wife's family the Coulters. I am curious to know what he was doing in the South right after the civil war when he had fought with the Union army.
