Samuel Julien/Betsey Runyan

Just received the death certificate of Elijah R. Julien which finally tells me that his mother was, indeed, Mary Elizabeth "Betsey" Runyan. She married Samuel Julien/Julin in Warren Co., OH on 25 Oct 1827. I have long suspected that this was my Samuel and Elizabeth, but now I know for sure. I also suspect that Elijah's middle name is Runyan, but I don't know that for sure yet.

St. Juliens from Sorel Quebec

I am looking for information on the St. Juliens (or Juliens) from Sorel Quebec. My ancestors moved from Sorel to Ontario sometime in the early to mid 1800s. The "Sorel" nickname followed the family and appears on many records, added to their names or used as a last name. This connection to Sorel must have been important to them. My G-grandfather was Oliver Julien who was married to Adelaide Labranche. I believe his father, also named Oliver, was born in Sorel abt. 1812 and died in Roxoborough Ontario in 1900. I have found several St. Juliens on a muster for the Prescott Ontario militia in 1829, so I believe my ancestors had arrived sometime earlier. I am not sure if the men listed are my direct ancestors as no other information aside from their ages is given. Thanks. Lori

Oliver Julien and Adelaide Labranche The Sorel Connection

My great great grandfather was
Narcisse "Nelson" Julien
b. ca 1854 in Russell, ON
d. 19 Sept. 1910 (unsourced)
Spouse: Mary Agnew
Marriage: 10Jun1880 in South Plantagenet,ON
Parents: Oliver Julien and Adelaide Labranche
My aunt tells me that the Juliens came from Sorel and that the nickname "Sorel" followed them. I have found documentation to confirm this as several of my ancestors do indeed have the name Sorel attached to their names. I am looking for more information on Oliver and Adelaide's origins. I have found records for Levi Julien and Ledia Labranche, and for another Oliver Julien and Catherine Labrauche (probably Labranche) all living in the same area in ON as Oliver and Adelaide. I am guessing they moved to Ontario together and are related. Does anyone have more info on this. Thanks
Hi,
I probably can't help you any...I'm also looking for a Fouche (you're right, it is properly pronounced Foo-shay but he always called it Fouch like pouch). Joe Fouche was my brother-in-law but I lost track of him and the family years ago. He married my half-sister, Dorothy, who was 17 years older than me and I just never saw either of them more than a few times.
I know he & Dorothy both passed away several years ago but I really need to learn about them. They had children whom I remember but don't know their names now.
I hope someone out there can help me...Thanks in advance.

June

JULIEN / JULIAN / RUNYAN / RUNYON

Looking for info on Samuel JULIEN (Julian / Julin) who married Betsey RUNYON (Runyan) in Warren COunty, OH 25 Oct 1827. I believe this to be the Samuel and Elizabeth Julien living in Vermillion County, IN in 1850 and 1860. Here is what I know for certain about these folks:

Samuel Julien b. 1806 - 08 in OH, d. 1860 - 80
Elizabeth Julien b. 1807 - 09 in OH or VA, d. after 1880
Their children:
Mary Jane b. 1832 in IN
Elizabeth A. b. July 1834 in IN
Elijah R. b. 1 June 1841 Independence (Warren Co) IN,
d. 10 Nov. 1915
Lovina b. 1842 in IN
Margaret b. 1846 in IN
Francis Marion b. 1848 in IN

There may have been two older children:
William b. 1829 in IN
Dorcas Ellen b. 1830 in IN
Both of these had married into the Starkey family and were living near Sameul and Elizabeth in 1850.

I can't find Samuel or Elizabeth in 1870. In 1880, Elizabeth is listed as Mary Elizabeth, mother, widow, aged 76, b. in VA, and living with Elijah and his family.

Sure hope that someone can help me with these lines. There are SO MANY Juliens and Runyans in southwestern Ohio around the 1820's. It's hard to know where these folks fit in (IF they fit in)!

Thanks!
I was searching for the surname Piette and came across your query. I checked the family tree that I have compiled for my family and find Phelanise Piette, wife of Elzear Plouffe, was the daughter of Pierre Piette and Josephte (or Jeannette) Belanger. I descend from Phelanise's brother, Leon. I have a little bit of information on the Plouffe families who intermarried with the Piette's.
Also, I have among my collected documents a page from the Register of Births for the Town of Grafton, Mass, for the year 1896. Listed for November 1 was "Francis Wilfred Pluff, parents Frank Pluff and Olive Rivers." I am not sure if Frank is the "Francois" to whom you refer, and the registrar butchered Rose Oliver's name.
Please contact me at mrisby@comcast.net. I will be happy to share what information I have with you.

Elijah was b. ca. 1840 in IN, Lovina b. ca. 1842 in IN, Margaret b. ca. 18 46, and Francis Marion b. ca, 1848 in IN.

From the looks of the 1840 census, there is a Samuel Julian in Butler Co Ohio. Correct age with two daughters. This is just south of here. That would be a good place to look.

I will look to see if I have anything on Butler County. I think somewhere I have it that one of the families lived down around Hamilton or Butler Co.

I have three Samuel's in my database. Samuel b 1833, son of John and Margaret Hedges, John the father died in Morrow Co Ohio. Siblings are Aaron, Sarah, Washington, Susanna, Margaret and Mariah, Samuel Deaton b 1736 (just a little to old) and I have a Samuel in Miami Co b 1796 and married a Phoebe Winans. I did not find a Phoebe Julien in the 1850 census, so not sure where if or where this Samuel might be in 1850 but he is also too old to be your Samuel, so the Butler County Samuel is your best bet.

It looks like he is the only Julian(all spellings) in Butler Co and there are no Julians in Butler Co in 1830 census. I found a marriage record for Samuel and an Abigail Lane in Butler in 1836 but could not find an Abigail Julien in any state in the 1850 Census, so could be she died and he remarried, so I would keep him as a prospect.

I have an Ohio Julien / Julian line that wound up in western Indiana (Vermillion and Fountain counties) and eastern Illinois (Edgar County). I have an Isaac, Elijah, and a Levi, as well as a Samuel, a Francis Marion, and a couple of Williams. The given names for the daughters include Mary Jane, Elizabeth Ann, and Dorcas / Dora Ellen. I am especially interested in Samuel (b. ca. 1807 in OH) who married Elizabeth _____ (b. ca. 1807 in OH or VA). Samuel and family are listed in the Vermillion Co Census for 1850 and 1860. I have no record of him 1870. In 1880, Elizabeth lives with her son Elijah and his family in Fountain Co., IN. There was also a Catherine Julien in Vermillion County who was b. ca. 1821 in North Carolina. Sure would hope to tie this line in with yours!
Lynn

Hi,
I searching for information on the following couple:
Etienne Gregoire m.Mar 03 1851 Gertrude Julien in St.Elzear de Liniere. She was Etienne' second wife, he was widowed of Marie Huard of Ste.Marie de Beauce,Qc..
I would like to confirm Gertrude's other first names, possibly Elizabeth (Eliza), to connect them to the US census 1881 of Holyoke,Mass.By this census she would be born about 1832 and Etienne in 1830. Sons Thomas was 18 and Napoleon 16.

and if possible confirm their children as being:
Joseph Felix m. Marie Letourneau, Francois m Domithilde Paradis,Napoleon Jerome m.?, Etienne m?, Thomas m.?, Moise m.? Caroline m. Joseph Labrecque, France, Gedeon, Jean m. Marie Vallieres. (Beauce records)
I am especially interested in Thomas m.Marie Bonneau and Napoleon m Flore Beland to link them to the Gregoire tree and the Can 1901 census of St.Narcisse, Lotbiniere.
Thanks in advance,Carol

Bob, I have the date of death for Jacob Julian as 1799. The James J Julian that married Martha C Craig was not born until 1805/1808 (I have both dates but 1808 seems to be the correct one...) The Jefferson comes from a handwritten family tree by my great grandfather, Robert Jefferson Julian. (he died in the early 1940's)

Y-DNA confirms Rene JULIEN as common ancestor

A perfect match on 43 markers between John and Gary JULIAN with Gary showing a paper trail to the immigrant Rene through son, Stephen (1700)has recently been reported by DNA Heritage. John most probably is a 7th cousin maybe through Rene's son, George (1706).

The probability that Rene is our "Most Recent Common Ancestor" MRCA is better than 95% no longer than 7 generations back. This probability is based on a 37/37 match. John and I have a 43/43 match and Rene is 9 generations back. Our cousinship resulting from Y-DNA tests is most certainly shown to be descending from Rene.

John's earliest papered male ancestor is James Jefferson JULIAN (1805-1849) born in TN and married 1823 in Lawrence Co, AL to Martha C CRAIG. It appears that James' parents could be George (1770) and Rebecca McKENNA who appear in the 1830 and 1840 Blount Co, TN census records.

Does anyone have data on George's son James? This would help to either eliminate or accept him as John's ancestor.

This message encourages male JULIANs to get their Y-DNA tested and join the Surname Project. I would recommend 43 markers from DNA Heritage.

I started in the fall of 2003 with 10 markers from OxfordAncestors in England, then to 25 markers with FTDNA in Houston, upgraded to 37 markers from FTDNA and finally to 43 markers from DNA Heritage. All labs have confirmed previously tested markers giving me comfort of the credability of the science.

Gary JULIAN of Aurora, CO

Thanks for identifying source of the "Jefferson" middle name. There are so many "James" with no middle names, it does get confusing.

I have no firm dates on James DOB - just 1794-1800. I have carried him as a son of Jacob (b. 1789) pretty much based on work of David Ray & Wilbur Julian. In my notes, David published and I quote:
3 Feb 2001. David R. Julian's "Where We Came From" (pg 55) lists Jacob's children (not aligned with the two wives) as, "... Mary, Martha, Margaret, Susannah, Jacob Jr, George, James, and Hannah." REJ

David did a lot of coordinating with Wilbur Julian. Both worked very hard on this line. I had assumed they had it right. Therefore, I can not comment on your DOD for Jacob or DOB for James. The truth may reside in Jacob's will probated in 23 Mar 1800 (which I have not seen).

Keep digging.

Bo

Hello Jean again,
From the 1830 Weakley Co, TN census, it appears that J J J's birth fits between 1800 and 1810, so that being a child of Jacob and Rachel seems unlikely. Now being a grandson may not be unlikely. It also appears that those in Weakley Co, TN are members of his family, possibly brothers.
Thanks for your input.
Gary JULIAN of Aurora, CO

Does MANLY give any clue as to who J J J's parents are?
Also I would like to see your reconstructions of the descendants of George and Rebecca. This is a weak lineage for me. Mine is down from Stephen 1700.
Thanks,
Gary JULIAN of Aurora, CO
brownjulian@comcast.net
I forgot to say that the second James J. is probably the son of Jacob (1730) and Rachel Alexander Julian.

I have James Julian son of George and Rebecca Julian. This is my line of Julians. I don't have much info on him but I do have a James J. Julian born about 1794-died about 1850 married to Martha Carlin Craig Nov. 5, 1823 in Lawrence, Ala.
Most of this came from Elizabeth Cate Manly. Hope this is helpful. Have been following the discussion on Missouri Julians with great interest. Have been in touch with some of you. I am now 83 + years and still at it.

I think I had better e-mail this to you since even the outline is 28 pages. This couple are my ggggrandparnts. I have been to the area in Tennessee where they settled when they came to Blount County early in 1800's. Logan's Chapel Methodist is still an active church. They are buried there and the stone even though broken is still legible. It is the oldest grave in the cemetery. Their son Isom(Ishom),my gggrandfather, was commissioned to preach by this church. This family moved to McMinn County which in part was later Bradley County where he was a Methodist circuit rider preacher until his death. His son George, my ggrandfather, was also a Methodist preacher. This branch for many years has had a Julian reunion. It was organized by Elizabeth Cate Manly. I don't know if it still has the annual meeting in August.
