Cynthia, what proof do you have of William's (who married Sarah Troutman) parentage. I had William and Margaret Johnson's son William marrying a different sarah and having a completely different set of kids. Would love to know where your information came from.

Jennifer

William Justice of Penn or NJ and Chicago

I really need some help on this one. I am not a Justice, but a local historian in the Southwest Suburbs of Chicago. I am looking for the family tree of William Justice b. approx 1803 in NJ, or Penn. He first appears in the 1850 census as living in Chicago's 6th ward. He was a city collector. He is shown as being born in NJ and is 43 years old. His wife is Mary A. and she is born in Penn and is 40. His children are: Francis M - 21 - b. Penn, Joseph 10 - b. Penn, Sarah A. - 16 b. Penn, Morgan - 9 b. IL, William B - 7 - b. IL.

In 1857 a famous Chicagoan name "Long John" Wentworth became mayor of Chicago for the first time. He had a farm out in Lyons Township IL at Archer and Harlem Av. With this, Long John appointed Justice as the keeper of the Bridewell (the original name for the Cook County Jail). William Justice stayed in this position until the end of 1860. As for records on the jail, I have not found much as the Chicago fire wiped it out as far as I know.

The 1860 Chicago census shows the 55 year old William Justice, now claiming to be born in Penn, and his wife in NJ, living at the Bridewell with the staff and a 16 year old William Jr.

Now - when (or before) William Justice became Bridewell keeper, he purchased a farm in modern day Lyons Township Illinois – outside of the city and within walking distance of his mayor – Long John Wentworth. The 1860 Census for Lyons Township shows 29 year old farmer Joseph and 25 year old Theresa his wife born in Bavaria, and a daughter Mary R. 9-12 Mos. Joseph has his own numeration number but no land holding – he is a son of William Justice Sr.

On the page before Joseph is shown a numeration for a 25 year old William Dicke holding land value with wife Margaret 20 years old. Dicke has servants and a gardener under him and a 17 year old William Justice Jr. living there. One of these servants is Fanny McKeon 30 years old born in Ireland. I believe that this is the same William Jr. counted with his father in Chicago for 1860. He just happened to be living out in Lyons Township when the census taker came by. I show William Sr. owning this tract in the 1870 Cook County Land map, and I also found reference to William Justice's (the Bridewell keeper's) farm in the Chicago Tribune. William Sr. left the position at the Bridewell, Dec 19, 1860.

The 1870 Chicago Census for 67 year old William Sr. (now b. NY) shows a 36 (may be a misprint) year old Mary (shown b. NY) and two children - Eva 10 & Ida 9 Dyke. William is shown as a gardener.

1880, Mary 65 is a widow and has Eva 18 & Ida 17 Dyke listed as granddaughters living with her.

Notice the Dyke and Dicke from the 1860 Lyons Township farm census is very similar.

Joseph Justice and Theresa went on to live in Evanston IL as Joe became a lawyer. William Jr. However, fell off the face of the planet.

This is important to me because the place where this Justice farm was is now in a town called "Justice" Illinois. The people around here have no real evidence why the town is named Justice. The town was incorporated in 1911 or so. Why would the first village board name their town after a family that had not been there since the late 1860's? The two theories that are printed in the local history books do not hold any weight.

My theory is that William Jr. died in the Civil War. The tribune lists a William Justice dying in the war as part of the 1st Illinois Light Artillery on or about Nov 22, 1864. The records on that unit show a death in that time period but show the man as Andrew Justice - not William. The Trib states that William from Chicago left a wife in "a fragile state".

I think that Tribune reported death was in fact William, and I think Eva and Ida Dyke were William's children, who in 1880 were living with their widowed grandmother.

I found a virtually unreadable Civil War pension index for a Fanny Justice, wife of William Justice. This guy is shown as serving in a WV infantry unit and two separate Ohio units. I can't read the rest of it, but it was filed from Illinois.

Are there any of you that fit into this family? I believe that the town was named for the deceased William Justice Jr. and though it was some 50 years later that the village was formed, it is possible that he was the only one from within the corporate limits of the present day Justice to die in the Civil War as seen through the eyes of the men who formed the village in 1911. Perhaps even one of these people on the census, or even one of the Justice children was married to one of the town incorporators and suggested the name of her relative for the town’s name?

Can anyone shed some light on this?

Bruce

He was born c. 1815.

The family story is that the Justice's were native Americans (Indians). I can't prove it. Actually, the story is that they left the Trail of Tears. Arriving in a village they were asked, "how many are there?" And they responded, "it's just us." Hence the name Justice or Justus.

Any chance we could be talking about the same family?

Judy

ABRAHAM Justice/Justus b:1790/1795 N.C.

Abraham married Mahetta Stonecypher and they lived in Morgan, Tenn. They had at least 8 children.
My notes show that he was born in Burke, NC. The public family trees I have seen here and Ancestry lists his father as Moses Justice. However, if he was born in N.C. just before the 1800 census, then Moses can't be his father. Moses was enumerated in S.C. in 1800. The only listing in Burke co is John Justus, {who does have one son under 10} but he is gone from Burke County in 1810.

There were two Abraham Justices , one, born a few years earlier, from SC who was indeed Moses's son, but he never lived in Morgan, TN.

Does anyone have information as to the County in which the Morgan County Abraham Justice was born? The one who married Mahetta Stonecypher.

For ease of typing I am using the Justice spelling, hoping you understand the myriad of spellings are included.

Hi, my Justice's were from VA on into NC. Sally Justice married Lewis Page and had my 3rd great grandmother Malvina Winnaford Page who married Rev. Stimson Hines Whitaker - named their son William Justice Whitaker. He had a son in Hamlet, NC, the same area as Diana's Justice's and perhaps yours? I'd love to exchange information.

Does this line sound familiar?

Lori

Was your GGgrandfather's mother's name Oxford? If so, there are good records on Pheraby, Phoebe, Oxford. I would like to know about Sarah Ann's marriage to J. M. Giles, where and when. This sounds like my Sarah Ann but I know in 1860 AL records she is married to James Bartlett Griffin and that marriage was about 1857 or 1858. Since I have never found a record of her death it is possible she left James B. Griffin and remarried elsewhere. So many records were lost during the Civil War. I have documents which bear the name of James Bartlett Griffin and Eli M. Justice so I know they were associated in Pike County, AL. I believe that the Griffins and Justices had cause to dislike each other (just from certain tidbits of family history) so it is possible that Sarah Ann may have left James Bartlett. Of course, I have yet to locate poor Millard during the 1860's and 1870's. Phyllis

My Eli is the father of Tillman D. or Tilman D. Justice. This Eli was born about 1809 or 10 in NC, if I remember Correctly. In 1850, he is in AL with no wife but several children. He has one daughter, Sarah Ann born about 1841 or 42 maybe even 43 in GA. This Eli's wife was Phereby or Fereby or even Pheriby Oxford. The name Tillman is derived from the Oxford side of the family. I do know that these Justice's were in TN at one time most probably between 1860 and 1880. There would perhaps be a James Millard or just Millard recorded with the family. Related names would be Bird, Byrd or Griffin, also Jones. Thanks, Phyllis

I am looking for descendants of Eli Justice one of whose wives was Millie Ann. My Eli was born about 1810 in NC and his first wife was Phereby Oxford. He also had a number opf kids one of whom was Sarah Ann. In the late 1850's and into 1860's, Eli and kids lived in Pike County, AL. He did some legal business with a James Bartlett Griffin. In 1857, James married Sarah (AL record). The family story is that she was very young. They appear together on the 1860 census for Midway, Barbour County, AL. There is also a female Bird or Byrd listed on these legal documents as a witness. Think she may have later married a Justice. What I believe is that, when James left for the War in 1861, Sarah went back to her family in GA. The dates of her birth vary widely but maybe she wished to make herself "a little younger" as she got older. The 1860 census has her at 18 which mean a birth date of 1842. I don't know what happened to her son James Millard Griffin between 1860 and 1880 and that's what I'm after. I think this Sarah married at least twice after leaving James Griffin. Both marriage may have been in GA or maybe NC. Thanks, Phyllis

James A. Justice of Buncombe County, NC

I am trying to clear up confusion regarding James A. Justice of Asheville, NC, b 31 Jan 1866, d 21 Jan 1918. Every reference I find has him as the son of Archibald Justice and Nancy Allison of Haywood County. However, this is problematic for two reasons: first, in the 1880 census, Archibald's son James A. is already 17 years old, making his birth year 1863 rather than 1866. More important, the death certificate for the James A. Justice born in 1866 states he was born in Buncombe County, not Haywood, and that his parents were Butler Justice and Mary Wilson. It seems more likely there were two James A. Justices born three years and two counties apart. I'm the g-g-grandson of James A., the son of Butler and Mary - would appreciate any info on Butler Justice, Mary Wilson and their family, and hope to correct the many records using the wrong James A.'s info in Archie's family.

I'm hoping our lines will cross! My Great Great Grandfather was a William Anse Justice. To my knowledge he only married twice, once to a Margaret Nancy Russell and once to a Minnie Staten.

Children with Margaret:
Lena b.1896
Haley E. b.1899-1980
Charlie Rufus b.1900-1994

Children with Minnie:
Rhoda b.1912
Estell b.1915
Odell b.1917
Jesse b.1920
Ila Mae b.1922

I found a census in 1900 that shows an Anderson married to a Margaret N with children listed as:
James W
Green B
Leilah
Mary
Mahala
Charles R

It is possible that Anderson or Anse (if they are the same) was married before, since at the time of the census his wife margaret would have been 10yoa when the oldest child was born. I am thinking that perhaps they are the same and Leilah is a misprint for Lena and Haley is mistaken for what is suppose to be Mahala(perhaps it was shortened to Hala E. and became Haley)

I am not sure of this since other trees show Anse's parents as a Moses and Arsena but there is nothing to prove this. I did find another census for 1860 that has Barry Justice, married to Mahula with children listed as James, Anderson and Caroline. If Anderson is the same Anderson, then it would make sense that he named his daughter after his mother. Whether or not Anderson and my William Anse are the same, I'm not sure. As well, my William Anse also has roots in Walker County Alabama, which is where my line is from. I'm thinking they could possibly be the one in the same. Does your wife remember what William Anse looked like? I have a picture of him and Margaret as well as my Great grand father Charlie Rufus.

Would love to compare info if you want to email me!

Betty,

Just reading through the Justice rootsweb site and was wondering if you can help me with the children from Jacob/Joab's first marriage. You mentioned an Arminda Justice (ca 1843). Do you know if she married Andrew Jackson "Jack" Fudge?

I have an Arminda Justice in my tree whose parents are unknown. But I also have an ArminTa Justice (ca 1850) who married a Jonathan Melvin (all these are either from OH or KY or both).

Anything you might have would certainly be appreciated.

Kathy George
Michigan
