Albert Bernhardt Kabisch

From my first request back in 2001 it has been interesting to see where the message boards have led. Unfortunately I haven't received any information on my Kabisch however it has been fascinating to find that there are so many Kabisch's the world over. Growing up we thought our name to be unique here in Australia, but it is as common as Smith in Germany! I have since discovered my GGrandfather came from Aupitz in Germany, but nothing more. Any information gladly received. Family research is so addictive and so very frustrating!
Amalie Kaebisch came to the US with here children, Pauline, Auguste,Moritz, Bruno, Otto, Lola, Roberton on the SS American on June 9, 1870. There was a Charles who was also on the ship who we assumed was her husband but later found out that it was her brother-in-law. Amalie was married to one of the Kaebisch brother's in Germany, he died and she came to the US with her children and Charles and then married a Henrick Kaebisch whom was already settled in Wisconsin. We have Henrick last will that states these children are his step-children. Amalie and Henrick were married here in Wisconsin on 6/26/1870. My e-mail is
kkaebisch@wi.rr.com if that makes it easier. That's Diane

It is likely they immigrated to Russia bacause the Czar governement offered German immigarants free land and other privileges. One of such previaleges was protection from Russian army drafts.

My Kabisches never left Russia and gradually assimilated with the local population. I do not have inforamation about "the first" Kabisches who arrived to Russia. The first Kabisch I discovered had a Russian first name, therefore it is likely he was born in Russia,,,

In the middle of 19th century, when the Russian goverment started drafting German immigrants to the army, many of them left the country for the US. In the States those people call themselves "Russian Germans"

Hi Chrisi,

No idea where I am searching and records very sketchy. All I know is that my GGF came from the Sudentenland area of Germany, his name being Albert Bernhardt (or variations thereof) Kabisch. He came to Australia around 1876 aboard the Elisabeth out of Hamburg as a single 20 year old. I have been told he had 5 sisters (???). He married here in Australia early 1880's and died around 1914.
I just keep hitting a brick wall as I don't know much more than that - oh yea, on the wedding certificate his father is listed as August.
Any help/information would be very much appreciated.
albert bernardt kabisch

I would certainly be interested in any thing you can advise me although our spellings are different. I do know that my Great Grandfather had 5 sisters (I believe) all of whom died of TB and I think this was before he came to Australia. I also know that his father's name was listed as August Kabisch on his wedding licence to his 2nd wife. Albert Bernardt was born in 1853 and arrived in Australia in 1878 aboard the 'Elisabeth" from Hamburg. I have unfortunately been unable to find any further information, I am at a dead end. So, if you can make any links with this information I will be more than grateful.

Thank you
Anne

Hi Penny,

Albert Bernhardt Kabisch is my Great Grandfather. He came to Australia in 1878 at 25 years of age. He married Louisa Gunther (nee Michael) and they had 2 children, Albert Bernhardt born in 1884 and my Grandfather Louis Bruno, born in 1888. My Great Grandfather died in 1914, he appeared to be an itinerant worker, moving around the country side whilst his wife seemed to stay put in one place. Louisa died in 1893 and he then married a Johanna Louisa Schloitthe. On the certificate of the 2nd marriage, it is noted thal Albert Bernhardt Kabisch's father was August, but this is all I have. My family believe that he came from the Sudetenland Region of Germany, but it is all a bit sketchy. In various records that I have found, he is shown as Albert Bernhardt and sometimes just as Bernhard.

So you can see, I will be greatful for anything that you can find out.

Thanks again for keeping in touch.....

Regards

Anne Berry-Smith (nee Kabisch)

I don't know if I told you, but I live in Adelaide, South Australia, Australia and most of what I saw was emmigration from Germany to America..........

I keep finding new sites and glean a little information here and a little there.

Please keep in touch

Anne

Thank you Penelope, I can't remember what info I have already given, so will give some extra just in case. Albert Bernhardt Kabisch was my Great Grandfather. He emmigrated to Australia in 1878 aboard the Stirlingshire aged 25. I believe his father's name was August. I don't know his birthplace. In Australia he married a lady by the name of Luisa Michael (who I think was already married to a Gunther who must have died as she had a child named Augusta Emilie Gunther). I have a little history on the Michael family if this is of any use, but it is really at this stage the Kabisch's that I am interested in. Other spelling variations we have hare are Karbisch, Kalisch (both without the c's) also both but starting with C - i.e. Cabisch etc.

Hoping to hear from you sometime.

Anne Berry-Smith

I am looking for more recent information on the Kabisch's from Philadelphia. My grandfather (Alfred) and his father (Robert) had a falling out but I know he had a brother (Kurt misspelled Hurt in one census) and a sister (Ella). I believe Kurt moved to Wash. Dc and Ella married a Blessing. Robert's wife died and he remarried his servant girl Katy Schmidt. robert had owned a boullion cube factory in Philadelphia.

I am actually looking for the Kabik family. I assumed there could be changes through the years in miscommunication. I actually might have some information. Of the little of information I have for the roots of the Kabik family, I know that many many many years ago there was a town in Russia called Kabik. I know that my family has roots there, I just want to know how to connect the dots. Whether it is help to you or me, I'm very interested in finding out if you have information about the ancestry of the surname Kabik.
Thank-you

Hi Crisi,
My g-grandmother Ernestine Kabisch, was born in Zeitz, Feb.1, 1831. She had 10 siblings including twin brothers. Some of them emigrated to US 1853--1860. She married a Christian Bachmann in Zeitz in 1853. Most of my info is from the Family History Library (Mormon) microfilm records of St. Michaels Lutheran Church in Zeitz. Anything sound familiar?
Marion

There is more interesting info on these people. If you want more, let me know. Do you know how Albert Kaebisch fits into the family? Every Kaebisch is related in one way or another.
if you look back in history during the franco prussian wars many people fled the german states to other countries. catherine the great offered land to the germans in order to have russia culitvated and in farming for revenues. check her edicts on the land for emigration. america was doing the same thing as well as australia offering land for settlers/farmers and for soldiers durning the civil war in america for the promise of land. if you look in the middle east there is a town called kabis. so who nows where we kabisch's origionally came from. also according to some german friends the name kabisch comes from the son of jacob. which is a bibical conotation. may be it is that the name has be transformed so many ways there are none who know the origional name and meaning. it is sad man's greed for power has destroyed so much that could have lead us to finding our origins and a sense of past.

since kabisch is not a widely used name finding information is hard but i have people in germany looking it up for me. So far all i have found is a wide population in zeitz germany and some in berlin but that is just i believe a move to not origional site. I had a search on the name done and the first mention of the name goes back to 1200's in silesian area of germany. The family name has a shield which was recorded in saxony germany in 1825 in linderthal. the crest is azure on a fess argent with three roses giles in center. it also has a line tree vert. in other words the shield is three broad stripes of color. azure, white with three roses, and azure. the roses mean decended from third daughter or some thing to do with a three daughter. the roses are red and have five petals with 1 leaf sticking out between the petals making a total of 4 leaves. in the geanealogy book of names the meaning is feeble languid man or as my german friends told me a person recovering from health problems.
