Re: Nicolaus Kachelriess/Nicholas Cochelrize

Peggy,

I believe that I am also descended from the Jacob Cocklereese (Reese) that migrated to Sumner County, TN. I am descended from his son William J. Reese that was married to Francis Malinda Evits whose son, William Ferrell Reese was the father of my great-grandfather, John Whitten Reese. I noticed that the 1850 & 1860 census lists William Ferrell Reese as William H. Reese; however, the 1870 census reflects his correct name as William F. Reese. (Ancestry has the last name spelled incorrectly RUSS).

Anyway, yesterday I found the maiden name for Francis Malinda Evits listed as Malinda Abbott on the death certificate for William Ferrell Reese on the LDS site (pilot site). William Ferrell Reese died on 17 April 1931 in Peacock, Stonewall Co., TX.

I wanted to take the time to say THANK YOU for all the research that you have done and to share the information on the web is wonderful!

Please let me know if you think we are a match.
Jacob Cocklereese

I believe that the the Jacob Cocklereese that you mentioned moved to Sumner Co., TN might be an ancestor of mine.

The information that I have is not verified, as I received it from another source. I am the great-grandaughter of Virginia "Virgie" Tennessee Harrison. I believe that she is the great-grandaughter of Jacob Cocklereese.

He was born in 1792 in NC and died in 1838 in Sumner Co., TN. He was married to Lucretia "Creasy" Jackson(born in 1796 in NC). They had a daughter, Caroline Reese(1825-1893)(name change?). She married James Bradley in 1854 in Macon Co., TN. They had a daughter, Mary Ann Bradley(1856-1925), who married James S. Gregory on Oct. 2, 1872 in Sumner Co., TN. One of their children was my great-grandmother, Virginia.

Any information you have on the family would be greatly appreciated.

Thank you,
Gina Whiteside

Nicolaus Kachelriess/Nicholas Cochelrize

Searching for information on the descendants of Nicolaus Kachelriess who arrived in American September 27, 1737 at the Port of Philadelphia, abroad the ship "Snow Molly" which left from Amsterdam, Holland and sailed to America via Dover, England.

Believe he is the same Nicholas Cochelrise who is listed on the 1737 Early Census Index - Philadelphia Co, PA.

No record found after 1737. Believe this family is picked up again the Granville District of NC in 1769/1770 with possible widow Mary Cocklereece Miers/Myars and possible sons Michael and Tabalt Cocklereece. Michael Cocklereece/Cocklereese is proven to be Michael Kachelreiss. Three of Michael's possible sons, Nicholas, Jacob, and Henry Cocklereese migrated to Sumner County TN about 1812. Tabalt's possible son John/Johannes, migrated to Illinois about 1834. Some mid to late 1800's descendants moved on to Iowa, Oregon, Missouri, and Texas.

Known descendants of Kachelriess have been found with the following surnames (among others): Cocklereece/Cocklereese, Cockelreece/Cockelreece, Cucklereese, Cockleriece, Cocklereas, Cocklerees. Many of these family lines dropped the Cockle/Cockel between 1840 and 1850 and became Reece, Reese, and Rees.
Martha, there are several Henrys and Daniels in this family...

Daniel, b. 1787 in Orange Co, NC, was my 3-gf. Births of most of his and wife Phebe's children are documented in the Friedens Lutheran Church Records (originally in German, now transcribed into English) which is near Gibsonville, on the Guilford / Alamance County line in NC.

I found the translation at the Greensboro NC Public Library. NC State Archives has a copy of the original in German.
My husband Wayne Kachelriess ( New Jersey) is son of Richard William Kachelriess Jr (New Jersey) and grandson of Richard William Kachelriess Sr (NJ/NY). So he must be from the New York branch of the family, but that's as far back as he knows, just that the family was from Heidelburg Germany. Richard Jr has one sister and four brothers all in New Jersey.

Wayne says that the name Henry is familiar, so your line and ours must be closely connected. Richard Sr may have had a brother Henry and some sisters. I'll try to see what I can find out. I would appreciate any more info you have on the NY family. Never heard of the NC connection until online today.

I find the name variations very interesting.

Meg Kachelriess, megkachel@aol.com

My grandfather's name was August Godfrey Kachelriess
he was born in Astoria, Long Island, New York
on August 18, 1887. His father's name was Henry
(Heinrich?) and his mother's name was Augusta
as far as I know Henry and Augusta were born in
Germany and came to the U.S. not too long before
August's birth. I cannot find any records before
August, and those are sparse. Parent's names are
from my 80 year old mom's memory. I wonder if
they are connected to your Kachelriess's? Family
gossip always said that a branch of the family
has been in the U.S. for a long time. Do you have
any idea what area in Germany your Kachelriess
family originated?
I would appreciate any info you might have.
Thanks,
Kit
P.S.
Kachelriess

Meg, I haven't found any connections with NY/NJ Kachelriesses, but that doesn't mean there aren't any!

I've also found Kachelreiss and Kachelriss -- but they are all the same original German surname: Kachelriess.

This name is so very rare in the old country - I'm told that virtually all of this surname originate from the same area in or near Unternesselbach, Mittelfranken.

None of the NC Kachelriess descendants used this spelling. In every case they used the anglicized spelling. Some of the variations are: Cocklereece (my line), Cocklereese, Cocklerees, Cockelrees, Cocklerease, and Cocklereas. I descend from Michael Kachelriess, his son, Daniel, his son David, his son, Henry, his son Martin Luther, his son James Levi (my father). The only records that use the Kachelriess spelling are the Friedens Church Records (Guilford County, NC) which were originally written in German in the early 1800's. Later records records written in English spelled it Cachelris and several other variations.

Orange Co Tax records spelled it Cocklerees.

Census records spelled it Cockleruse, Cocklereece, and Cocklereese (among others...)

Michael appears as Cockleriece and Cocklereas in NC probate records.

Daniel appears as Reece on the 1850 census.

David appears first as Cocklereese, then as Reese. His son Henry appears as Reese and then Reece -- his children used Reece, Reese and Rees... His on Martin Luther, appears as Reese and Reece, but all of his children used Reece...

My father knew his great grandfather had changed the name from Cocklereece to Reece, but didn't know the name was actually Kachelriess. I'm certain the majority of the Cocklereece ancestors had no idea how the name was really spelled!
