The answer is in your genes. That's how I tracked my family back to Ireland. Same for many members of the Cain DNA project at www.familytreedna.com/public/Cain-Caine. We have members named Kain, but be aware that other branches of your family may not necessarily be Kain, but may be Cain, Keane, etc. as I have found myself.

Doing a research project for my family history. My Dad does not know anything about the history of our family and I am unable to find anything on Kain's that immigrated to Wisconsin. The oldest known Kain's (all deceased) Gordon Kain Sr. Fought in World War II lost left arm during war. The rumor is that our particular family descends from Ireland. Any information on my ancestors and their families/jobs/overall lives would be greatly appreciated.

Gage Kain and Elizabeth Agnes (Bessie) Allinson Family

Hello! Looking for ANY information on Gage Kain, born about 1889 in Iowa. He married Elizabeth Agnes (called Bessie) Allinson, born 13 Sep 1890 in Lead, South Dakota. They were married 31 Jan 1912 but I don't know where. They had a son, Gage W., on 17 Feb 1914 in Montana. The 1930 census shows Elizabeth as head of household in Seattle, King, WA, a seamstress for a dry goods store - her son Gage W. is 16 years old. This would mean that Gage probably died sometime between the 1920 and 1930 census, or maybe they divorced. Any information would be helpful - thanks!

William H. Kain of Penn.

William H. Kain

William H. Kain was born January 4, 1849, in West Manchester Township. At the age of sixteen he began teaching school, and at nineteen entered the Pennsylvania College at Gettysburg, and graduated four years later. At the age of twenty-three he was appointed county superintendent to fill the unexpired term of Stephen G. Boyd. This occurred in 1871. He was elected in 1872. And re-elected in 1875, serving in all about seven years. In the year 1876 he prepared for the State Department a history of the progress of education in York County. Mr. Kain had a keen zest for learning, and was untiring in the pursuit of knowledge. Though firm in his disposition, he was free from dogmatism and pedantry. Having a predilection for the practice of law, he was admitted to the bar in 1878, had acquired a lucrative practice, and obtained prominence in his profession, when his career was cut short by premature death on February 3, 1993. He was a man of indefatigable energy in whatever he undertook.

Taken from the book, “History of York County, Illustrated 1886” by John Gibson, Historical Editor

Patrick Kane m. Ann O'Neil ca. 1856 in Westport Ontario?

OBITUARY
Arlington Enterprise Thursday 11 May 1911

“The late Patrick Kane was born in West Movine, County Clare, Ireland, March 9, 1820. He came to Ontario, Canada, in 1848, and from there emigrated to Sibley county in 1856, settling on a farm in Green Isle township, where he lived until about ten years ago, when he moved to St. Paul to reside.

He is survived by eight children, as follows: James Kane, Judge of Probate at Breckenridge, Minn.; Chas. Kane, attorney and member of the Assembly, St. Paul; Henry and George Kane, St. Paul; Mrs. Francis [Bridget] Dolan and Miss Minnie Kane, also of St. Paul.”

NOTES:

Patrick Kane was a son of Michael Kane, b.ca.1795 near Moveen, who married ca.1815 [Margaret?] Green.

I do not know when or where Patrick's wife, Anne O'Neil Kane, died. Pat was a widower in 1900. Ann was a daughter of Thomas O’Neil [ca.1781-1832], who m. ca.1827 Bridget Doyle [ca.1795-1862]. Thomas O’Neil may have had a previous wife, if the difference in his age from Bridget is correct. Bridget remarried in 1833 James Kehoe [ca.1802-1865].

1848 Emigration to Canada

Although Patrick Kane stated several times that he emigrated from County Clare to Canada in 1848-1849, we have not found a ship’s passanger list. The nearest major port for emigration from Clare was the city of Cork. Limerick, at the head of the Shannon River estuary, was a much smaller port.

9 May, 1857, child born, Westport, Leeds Co. Ontario, Canada

The birth record for James Kane, the first known child of Patrick Kane & Ann O’Neil, is the earliest record of the family we have found in North America.. James was born in Westport, Leeds County, Ontario. I have not examined the baptismal record to determine godparents etc. Thomas Kane, the second child of Patrick and Ann Kane, was born in 1859 in Minnesota.

1860 MN Census:

1860, MN, SIBLEY, GREEN ISLE Series: M653 Roll: 574 Page: 820
Surname Given Age Sex/Race BP
CAIN PATRICK 36 M W Ire
Cain Ann 27 F W NY
Cain James 2 M W Can
Cain Thomas 11/12 M W MN

1870 MN Census:

1870 MN, SIBLEY, GREEN ISLE Series: T132 Roll: 10 Page: 618
Surname Given Age Sex/Race BP Value real estate Value pers. estate
KANE PATRICK 45 M W IREL $500 $400
Kane Anna 40 F W Irel
Kane James 13 M W CT should beCanada
Kane Thomas 11 M W MN
Kane John 8 M W MN
Kane Bridget 6 F W MN
Kane Charles 3 M W MN
Kane William 6/12 M W MN

1880 MN Census:

1880, MN, SIBLEY, GREEN ISLE Series: T9 Roll: 634 Page: 231
also Family History Library Film 1254634 NA Film # T9-0634 Page 231D
Name Relation sex/Race Age BP Job FBP MBP
PATRICK KAIN Husb Male W 50 Ire farmer IRL IRL [b. 9 Mar.1820]
Ann KAIN Wife Fem W 46 NY Keep House IRL IRL [b.
It's very interesting that you also have McKain & Glas surnames, but I don't know anything about them. All the people in my previous posting were children of John & Elizabeth (Halliday) CAIN/KAIN/McCAIN/McKAIN. On their marriage record in 1838 in Whitehaven, England, John's father was listed as Thomas Cain, whose occupation was weaver. John was born circa 1813 in Ireland and was a stone mason as were most of his sons. From lots of postings about this surname, I'm assuming that these people traveled between Scotland and Ireland quite a lot. Whether my Thomas Cain was Irish or Scottish is unknown.

My Glass connection comes in with the wife of John Halliday Kain (son of John & Elizabeth). Lucy Glass was born in Liverpool to William & Ann (Parr) Glass. William was born circa 1800, supposedly in Liverpool but I suspect he was really born in Scotland. Lucy was their youngest child (of many), but their first two children were born in Scotland according to censuses. As there are many Glass/Glas families all over Scotland, I haven't been able to narrow down any connection.

Regards, Conni

I have a Davidson McKain b. 1748 at Edinburgh, Scotland. He married Catherine Glas 16 Sep 1773. Catherine is the daughter of Rev. Hugh Glas of Kettle, Fifeshire, Sct, who is my 4X grandfather. Records show that Davidson McKain was a grocer in Edinburgh.

I just took a look in the IGI and it shows Davidson and Catherine had two sons, James McKain and Stodart McKain, one born in Edinburgh and the other in South Leith.

Are you familiar with this McKain or Glas family?

Thanks much!

Hi Conni,
Thanks so much for your quick reply. So far, I don't know of any of my Glas ancestors who moved down to England, however, what I know about mine (with the exception of a grandmother, Margarete Glas) goes back to the 1700's, and who's to say that future generations may have relocated.

I will definitely keep your correspondence in my Glas file in the event I discover something about your rellies, and I would ask that you do likewise.

Thanks again, and good luck with your research!!!!

Betty in NC
