Molly,

Are you still there. I think the Antonina Kalafut that you corrected is my great grandmother who settled in Carbondale, PA. It was thought that her last name was Calafut. But I am fairly certain this is her. We know of no other Kalafuts related to her in the states. Would love to share information with you.

Steve

I am from Kalafut lineage, which is confirmed to be from the Village of Maniowy in the former Spis County of the Austrian-Hungarian province of Galicia. It is now in the very south of Poland, with many Kalafut's still there.

So my Kalafut's are Slovaks (well, now Polish).

My great grandfather John Kalafut was the son of a Frank or Francisek. I don't know if John had any siblings -so would be interested to find out. John came here in 1911, and settled with wife Antonia in Passaic NJ then later Whippany NJ.

Best,
Rusty

Hi:

I had posted here a while back about my great-grandparents, and have made some significant headway since then. I figured I would write and share what I found.

IF your Kalafut's are from the same place mine are, then they are from Southern Poland, an area formerly known as Spis County. Chnaces are that they are from the same place, as the last name is from a specific area and people were born and died in the same town - and in their lifetime only went a few miles from home.

My great-granfather, John Kalafut, was from Maniowy - which was located in Slovakia, then Austria, then Austria Hungary, then Poland. The village was flooded by the Polish Government in the 70's to make way for a resevoir, and was moved up the hill.

John's father was Frank - or Francisek. If you are looking for your ancesrtal hometown, look up your great-grandfather Andrew's passenger manifest at Eliis Island.org . The older manifests (1900-1920) tell you their nearest relative at home, their destination (Passiac, NYC, ...) and their home country and hometown. Also, if Andrew was a citizen, look up his naturalization poapers at the courthouse - that's how I found my g-grandfather's hometown.

Anyway, hope to learn more. Hope to find another Maniowy-ite.

Best,
Rusty

Hello Joseph. My dad Alvin Ballard was in ww2 and died back in 2000. I am going through his pics and found a photo with name of Joe Kalafut on back of the pic with notation of a buddy. Would you like a copy of the wallet pic. He is in uniform and standing in front of a german house. Thanks Dale Ballard and my preference e mail is dballad5@cox.net

This was originally posted by my Uncle Joe about my grandfather, Joseph J. Kalafut.

His (Joseph Sr's) parents were John and Antonia Wojtowicz. John was born in 1892 in Maniowy, near Nowy Targ and came to the US via Ellis Island in 1909. He married Antonia Wojtowicz (1892-1981), who was from Szeleborg, Poland, and had two other sisters in the US - Agnes, who married a Mjarton, and settled in the Detroit area, and Marianne or Mary who married a Goryca.

Both John and Antonia died in Whippany, New Jersey.

Any info?

Hello Rlkdlk,
Thank you for responding to my post. Kalafut is my married name and I am curious as to it's national origin. I have heard it is either German or Polish. I was surprised when you mentioned your family thought it was Boehmian.
I sent your post to an elderly uncle in Chicago to see if he recognizes any names. I had heard that Kalafut is a common name in Chicago.
thanks again.
Grace

My father was Michael Joseph Kalafut, born in Chicago in 1926 to Joseph Kalafut and Anna Noga (maiden). Michael was the youngest of eight, all siblings lived in the Chicago area, although I never met them all. What I do remember of the siblings is aunt Marge (Kaprel), aunt Marie, uncle Joe Kalafut. I wonder if my uncle Joe was your grandfather? Hope this helps.

If he had social security numbers than there too should be a place of birth. http://ssdi.rootsweb.com

I have a website where I've put details about Kalafut births, deaths, marriages, engagements and obituaries. http://genealogy.kalafut.org/kalafut/

If anyone has Kalafut genealogy they could share, please contact me at family@kalafut.org - I would also be happy to send anyone the sources, census details and trees that I have so far.

Thanks,
Molly

Hello my Great grandmother was Maria Kalafut and she was born on 16 Apr 1875 in Markusfalu, Slovakia. Her parents were Joannes Kalafut and Maria Roth. After coming to America they settled in Youngstown, OH. Maria married a John Kotasek. Do any of these names sound familiar?

Another place of birth reference, besides Czechoslovakia, that I have is from George Kalafut's own death record. It reveals Austria-Hungary. He died in May of 1946.
George Kalafut and Anna Petros were married way up north in St. Lawrence County, NY.

It is not true that most Kalafuts were in the Chicago area. Many came to NY and PA. How could they sail to Chicago? They claimed many origins in the Czech Republic area. Hungarian, Austrian, Chech, Poland. I believe that these were teretorial areas. What I have found consistant is Czechoslovakia. But it is just a small area, smaller than many US states.
Does the surname Petros mean anything to anybody?

A little bit about "Kalafut"

My grandfather (one of the many Joseph Kalafuts) says the name originally had the l-slash, not the plain l (unfortunately, I don't think said character is in the stardard charset.)

Also, it may be coincidence, but I accidentally discovered that Kalafut is Hungarian for "adventure".

Still a mystery, and my own family history (namely, what eventually happened to my grandfather's older brothers) is equally puzzling.

-Ben Kalafut

Kalafut?

I haven't found anything on the Kalafut name, even on the Polish surname explanation databases, etc.

My grandfather is Joseph Kalafut, born in Oklahoma sometime between 1910 and 1920, I think. He was the son of a man named Andrew Kalafut, who I believe was a Polish immigrant. He had two older brothers who left home when he was quite young, who he tried to find after his service in World War II, but was not able to locate. Perhaps they had children.

I will have to talk to him (my grandfather) about it for more information, such as exact dates, the exact location in Oklahoma, when his father died, etc.

There are many Kalafuts in the Chicago area, and it is quite possible that one of them may be able to explain the name's origin (as many of them are recent immigrants).

Good to see that someone else is interested in the name.
Hi
Saw your message on the Web. I have been trying to find some information on Kalafut's. My husband's family think's it is of German origin. But a man I met from Frankfurt said it is not a German name. The Web shows many, many Kalafut's in the US. It appears it may be polish or Slovakian. What is your understanding of the heritage of the name.
My husband's grandfather was Andrew Kalafut and was born in Chicago about 1900. I don't know his father's name.
thanks!

My grandfather's name was John, and he came to this country from Poland sometime between 1900 and 1908. He shortened the name to Kafut and refused to talk about any relatives. He married Magdelena Czupta in 1908. Does this sound familiar to anyone. He spoke of brothers but no names. The family knew where he was, but the would not talk about them. He moved to Hibbing Minnesota in the late teens early 20's and was a miner.
