Re: Chatarina Kallberg

I can provide considerable andecdotal information. You have to understand that my father was a taciturn person, not given to much talking -- a typical trait of Swedes, even today. He never said much about his background , but here are a few facts I gathered from him. The family lived in a sod hut in Nebraska, and, according to my mother, they were so poor so of the children had to share plates during meals. Johan Andersson Lundberg was a lay minister in the Swedish baptist church -- I have the impression that the community he lived was composed of baptists who left Sweden as a group.

As to his adopting the name Lundberg, the Swedish government in the early 19th century issued a list of acceptable surnames, Lundberg (which means a mountain with a forest or grove of linden trees on it) being one of them. This was done at a time when the Swedish population was growing, and because of enclosures many peasants were being pushed off the land -- this was the main motive for migration to the US. Most of these peasant/farmers took the name of their fathers -- as with Andersson -- or Ander's son -- and this was causing confusion because soon more and more people had the same last name. I assume that Johan either voluntarily or by degree took the name Lundberg.

To continue the story, the Lundberg's stayed in Nebraska until about 1892 when they moved to Idaho. This move was probably caused by a drought in the midwest which lasted for several decades at the end of the 19th century. They settled in New Sweden just outside of Idaho Falls. There is a cemetary there with several Lundberg's in it, but none so far as I can tell are directly related to me.

Joel (or Joe as he was always known) was railroad engineer and lived in Spokane, Washington. I met he and his wife Allie a number of times in the 1940s and 50s. He died about 1957 or 58. Nathan (or Nate) and Abel (Abe)moved to Los Angeles and both died there -- before I was born in 1941.

I know nothing about Gertrude. My understanding is that my father, as the youngest in the family, took care of Chatarina in her last years. When she died, he and Nate moved to Los Angels, where they initially worked picking oranges. My became a plasterer, and then a plastering contractor in the San Gabriel Valley.

There is more I can pass on if you are interested. You are certainly welcome to contact me directly instead of going through Ancestry. My e-mail address is: dlundberg@cnsi.ucla.edu.

I forgot to include the following:

For some reason Johan Andersson Lundberg (Chatarina's husband) and his brother Anders Andersson Lundberg added the Lundberg surname. Do you know anything about the name change/addition? Did it occur in Sweden or in Nebraska? Why did they change their name?

It has taken me a long time to find any information about this family, but I was able to locate the location/date of death and burial for Chatarina. She is buried in the Rosehill Cemetery in Idaho Falls.

I would love to hear about the experiences in Idaho and Nebraska.

I do not have marriage, death, or family information for Joel, Abel, David, your father, or Gertrude. Do you have access to that?

-Staci

Hello,

Chatarina was my grandmother, the mother of Levi E. Lundberg, who died in 1963. My father was 60 when I was conceived so I was far removed in age from his immediate relatives. However, I believe that Chatarina died in 1919 or 1920, in Idaho Falls, Idaho, where the family moved in the 1890s, or rather they moved to a community outside of Idaho Falls called New Sweden, which not longer exists.

I can tell you more about my father, what I know about his siblings and their experiences in Idaho and Nebraska. My father moved to California in 1920 (or thereabouts), and live in Monrovia and Arcadia. He is buried in Monrovia as is his brother Nathan.

David Lundberg

I came across your photos and I'm very interested. I have found that my great grandmother's name was Johanna Mathilda Kalberg and she married Franz Herman Qvarfot in Chicago, Cook County, Il on 12/27/1872. Could be a pic of my grandmother. Please let me know if you have any other info on the pics. Her birth year was abt. 1847 in Sweden.
I am looking for information on my great-great-grandmother, Chatarina Kallberg. She was born in Sweden in Jul 1842, married Johann Andersson Lundberg in Stockholm (20 Nov 1869) with whom she had 8 children (Carl Johan, Simeon E, Nathan Oscar, Joel, Abel B, David, Levi E, and Gertrude J). Based on locations and dates of births, the family was in Sweden in June 1872 and Stromsburg, Nebraska in Feb 1874.

I'd like to find Chatarina's actual birth and death dates and find her mother, father, and any siblings.

I'm wanting to find where in Norway the Kalberg family came from. We believe it's Farsund, but that's unconfirmed.

You should join the Norway list on www.rootsweb.com for your questions on the family in Norway. Someone there might be able to help you. They have great teamwork on the list to help people find their ancestors in Norway!
