I have had a lot of help from the records office in Katowice the only problem is that you have to write to them in Polish. I've also had heaps of help from Zenon at http://polishorigins.com/document/home_page but I haven't been able to go back any further, I'd have to go there or hope that a family member sees my post.
Good luck with your search.
Meredith

i am also trying to find information about my ancestry from Katowice. I actually visited once briefly in 1998. Let me know if you find an interesting source with information. Possible surnames were enoch or redner on my end i think. we're not quite sure, the names were altered when they arrived in the u.s. post wwii. i just rec'd some info on my polish side from a cousin who has amazing records. in my cousins chart, he has a johann but he was born in rawa ruska, poland. he was married in Chrzanow Poland (Krenau, Austria) but past away in 1942. doubt its the same one because kaleta and the other surnames you mentioned don't match any in my chart that i know of.

we have info about the following surnames from krakow, chrzanow, and katowice : marmor schneider mehler but not much about redner or enoch

if anyone out there reads this and a name rings a bell, please let me know...thanks in advance, Robyn

Hello Crystal
My grandfather Jacob Walczak married Anna Kaleta in Chicago in 1911. Anna was born in 1893 in Kazimierz, Kielce, Russian Poland. The church record of their marriage indicates that her parents were Stanislaw Kaleta and Sofia Sobieraj (maiden name).
Anna & Jacob had 2 sons--Bronislaw and Boleslaw. Boleslaw died at the age of 4 months in 1915. Anna died later the same year (October 31, 1915). I have never been able to locate what happened to Bronislaw (born in 1912).
Jacob Walczak later married my grandmother Katherine Kaszuba in 1917. The had 5 children.

Ignac Kaleta came to the United states in 1905. He was 20 years old and was traveling to his uncle, Jozef Karpanty, in Toledo, ohio. Joseph Karpanty was my great-grandfather and I am trying to figure out Ignac's connection to him. Ignac hailed from Tarnow, Galicia. He is possibly the son of one og Joseph Karpanty's sisters. Any information would be appreciated.

Kaleta from Katowice, Poland

Hi,
My grandfather was from Katowice, Poland, Peter William Kaleta b.1873. He emigrated to Australia & we know very little about his family in Poland. We recently found a letter written to him in German from his nephew, this led me to find that at the time of his birth that part of Poland was actually in Germany. I believe he had several siblings & only one I know the name of for sure, his sister Pertoneli who's married name was Martzik, she lived in Konczyce, Katowice in 1939 & at the time she was in her 80s.
Peter's parents were Yan or Jan Kaleta & Rosalin Rudka & at some time Yan re-married & has a few step-children. One part of this family were named Schewiola & lived in Hindenburg, Germany. It is from Florian Schewiola that the letter to my grandfather is written & he had a brother named Johann.
As I know very little about my Kaleta family, it is quite possible that some may have emigrated to the USA.
I hope this may ring a bell with someone out there.
Meredith

Peter Kaleta-Katowice

Looking for anyone who may know something about my grandfather's family. His name was Peter William Kaleta or maybe Pietre Wilhelm Kaleta born a Catholic in Katowice in 1873, he emigrated to Australia in 1898 after changing his name to Peter William Schaffer, he had no further contact with his family so very little is known about them. His parents were Jan Kaleta & Rosalin Rudka ( or Budka )& it's possible that he had a sister named Kathrina & brother Thomas, it is believed that he had many siblings but nothing is known of them. My grandfather was the ' black sheep ' of the family so it's possible that he was never spoken of again by his family but if there's anyone who may know of or has heard of a family black sheep please let me know. Thanks.

Janice, saw the posting from a while(!) ago. Tom's wife is my cousin. Here's the best information that I have. My Grandfather (Charles Kaleta) was born in 1908 in Chicago. He had several brothers, Albert, Tony, and maybe Jackie if I remember correctly. Their father's name was Joseph Kaleta, was born in Poland and came to the US and settled in Chicago. My father has always told me that there was also a group of Kaleta's that may have been related to Joseph that settled in Calumet City. My Father is one of two boys born to Charles. They were Thomas and Ronald Kaleta.

Hope this helps some.

Hi Janice, I have been doing Family Research on the Kush Family. Caroline Murczak was married to John Kaleta. They had 3 children - Mary born in 1899 in New York; Frank born July 23, 1901 in New York and Julia born in 1905 in Illinois. Her parents were Mike Murczak and Eva Ksenska. I understand that Caroline was born in Austria and immigated in 1897. She married Walter Lodge Kush on May 13, 1907. They had two sons: Carl (my father-in-law) born October 31, 1910 and Mike born in 1908. I understand that Mary married a Frank Matuzak and they had 2 children - Lillian and Chester. I am interested in finding information about Julia and John. I met Frank years ago at Carl's funeral. Hope this gives you some info you needed.

There is a fairly large concentration of Kaleta's on the South Side of Chicago (and neighboring suburbs). Sorry I couldn't help, but I'll keep you in mind if anything else comes up.

Had property in Otis, New Durham Twp, LaPorte Co., IN.

My Mom is remembering as much as possible. My Dad passed away last year. She remembers family coming from Chicago to visit my grandparents, but my grandfather was not too receptive.

Does this sound like the same line?
Thanks for any input you may have! I look forward to hearing from you.
Jan

Kaleta

Tom Attreau's wife (Above) is actually my cousin. Here is what I have found out so far. Of our particular branch of Kaleta's settled in Chicago in the early 1900's. My dad's father Charles Kaleta was born in 1908 in Chicago.

Kaleta is a Prussian name and much more common in that area of Poland/Germany that used to be Prussia. In fact, there are several high ranking government officials in Poland with the surname Kaleta.

To the best of my knowledge, most of the Kaleta's in this branch can be traced back to Chicago and Calumet City, IL. I have crossed paths with a few other Kaleta's over the years and we have never been able to tie ourselves together. Although I have never been able to trace our family history beyond our American roots.

Kaleta/Faltin

I am researching the Faltin surname, some of
whom lived in Chicago, IL. My great grandmother
was Helen/Hilda Faltin. She married John Soltis.
They did not immigrate. They both died before
1900. Their son, John lived in Leisenring, PA.
In doing my research, I came across the
following information:

Ludmila Kaleta, step father Mihaly Faltin
Felso Lapos to husb Janos KALETA, April 9,
1911 Hamburg to NY. SS Kai Vic

This is from a ship record that I have. The
ship name is SS Kaiser Victoria.

I am interested to know more information
about Mihaly Faltin. The town Felso Lapos is
now known as Lapsze Wyzne and is located in
southern Poland near Slovakia. My ancestors
were Slovaks.

Soraya Bambha
bambha@sonnets.net
