Three years later, I have found my great-grandfathers parents and his whole Steinauer line going back to 1335 in Einsiedeln, Switzerland. I've located second cousins in Switzerland, and have just come back from a visit to meet them. The family story was actually that my Great-Grandfather, Peter Steinauer, immigrated to America with two brothers. They were Benedict and Meinrad, and they did go out west, as our family lore suggested, to Sacramento. Benedict had hotels (Wm. Tell & New Wm. Tell Hotels), and Meinrad had saloons. Sometime after Meinrad's death in 1892, Ben moved to San Fransisco, where he had another hotel. He died in 1915, leaving just one child, a daughter. Meinrad had at least one son, which is all I've found any trace of. Meinrad's wife was Johanna. His son was Benedict, named for his brother. Benedict married Marie Kalin, and had three daughters before he died between 1910-1920 in Sacramento.
