Joachim Kalinowski, Philadelphia PA immigration1906

Hello,

my grandfather's godfather Joachim Kalinowski emigrated from Germany (Bochum) to the United States in 1906. It looks like he went from Hamburg to New York with the "Amerika". In 1911 his name is again on a passenger list and it says that he returns to his home address 721 S. 20th Street in Philadelphia. He seems to have stayed in the States as my grandparents received Care Parcels from him after the war. Would anybody happen to know what happened to him or of he had any children etc.?

Thanks for your help,
Astrid

I found the name Kalinowski in my mom's baby book. She would have been married to a Lawrence Szatkowski, probably born in the 1860s and probably in Poland. Am guessing she lived in Orleans County New York. Had three sons; Stephen, Jan (John)[both in Wisconsin] and Boleslaw, and maybe a daughter Victoria. The boys all immigrated between 1900 and 1910. Longshot, but I figured I'd post. Thanks, Kevin

My Grandfater Alexander Kalinowski and his brother Joseph came to this country sometime between 1910 and 1912 they left from Hamburg Germany. He was born in the old country May 5, 1891 to I/16/1958. I is my understanding they they spent some time in the Pittsburgh area and supposedly made a killing in real estate. My Grandmother Wladyslawa (Virginia) Kalinowski 12/12/1889 to 5/27/1982 and thier eldest son Francek (Frank) came over in 1912. Joseph lived in the New Castle/Wilmington Delaware area and I have lost track of him. Alexander and Virgina bought a farm outside of Port Penn, Delaware. They had 7 children Frank Kalinowski (still alive), Joseph L. 1915 - 1971, Edward 9/19/1919 to 4/4/1953 (my father), Jane Bienkowski, Helen Armstrong, Blanche Nyce and Lydia Bower. Any further information would be appreciated.

Dear Sir,
I'm the son of Zefiryna Kalinowski and Zbigniew Dabrowski. My mother - Zefiryna is the daughter of Pawel Kalinowski and Olga Siwczyski. My grandfather Pawel was a soldier during the anti-communist war in 1920. His family has a great areas on the Ukraine, but after the 1917 they lost almost of them. Then he came to Chelm - now this city lies on the east border of Poland, but a few time he visited Rawa Ruska and vicinity. There were located the last properties of family. After the II WW the family lost all. Maybe you're looking this part of family. And one more information: in the villages Bukowa Wielka and Sawin near Chelm e few families have a name Kalinowski, but they get it in 1864 after my family (the tsar's law).

We have done an extensive search of St. Anthony of Padua's (Jersey City, NJ) records, and have surmised that Frank's parents' names were Jacob and Rosalia. We do not seem to be closely related.

Apparently the time in Pennsylvania was very short: from about 1890 - 1892. Older and younger siblings to my grandfather were baptized at St. Anthony's.

We have found siblings to Frank (or Franciszek):
Hedwiga
Jan (possibly John or Johann) Kalinowski
Tekla (or Tecla) m Ignatius Baksza (alt. Baxa or Baksa)
Ignatsz (Ignatius/Ignatz)

Any information on these collateral lines would be appreciated. All lived in the area of Jersey City in the 1890s - early 1900s.

My sister Joan has valiantly slogged through the microfiches for St. Anthony of Padua's in Jersey City. Apparently the name of Frank's father was Jacob. We find names of Jan and Ignatius (Ignatz?) (sorry, the names are latinized in the records) often as witnesses. Frank and Rose were in Pennsylvania about 1890-1891, but moved back to Jersey City by 1892 and stayed there until their deaths. The records we found were all dated from the 1890s.

If these facts fit with your information on your Jan Kalinowski, there may be a connection. Searching through these records was the first we were aware that there may have been siblings or cousins to our great grandparents in this country.

Ann Kalinowski

Saint Raphael Kalinowski

Joseph Kalinowski (1835-1907), who took the name "Raphael of Saint Joseph" when he became a priest in the Discalced Carmelite Order, was sainted in 1991 by Pope John Paul II.

I am related to him -- he was the brother of my great-great-grandfather, Gabriel Kalinowski.

I have a webpage about Saint Raphael at http://www.elonka.com/family/saint/raphael.html

If anyone else is related to Saint Raphael, I would like to know about it, as that means that we are related too. :)

elonka@aol.com

There may or may not be a connection. We are not aware of any brothers that also immigrated, although my father recollects a woman who was supposedly an aunt accompanying his father to get a delayed birth certificate (at the age of 50!) According to that birth certificate, our grandfather was born in Taylor.

According to census information Frank Sr became a citizen about 1890, 5 years after immigrating. Perhaps if we could find citizenship papers for both our relatives, we might be able to find if there is a common village in Poland. Unfortunately, we have not been able to find any such records when we asked the genealogy folks in PA.

Ann Kalinowski, Joan Koch's sister

I looked at your message, as my grandfather was Stanislaus Kalinowski, and he came from Suchowala, south of Augustow. I do look for his brothers descendants who live in PA. Anyway, I did go to the Ellis Island website, and looks like there were several Bolesaw and Zofia who came through Ellis Island. Have you looked to see if those are your family? Have you looked at their death certificates and the social security death index to see if you could get a copy of their application - which will give you the place of birth and the parents' names. Lots of pieces of info can be collected in very places. Nancy Firlik Nncyfrlk@hotmail.com

They were all communicants of St. Anthony of Padua church in Jersey City, and would have been in their twenties and thirties during the 1890s.

These are all children of Jacob and Rosalie Kalinowski of Poland, we believe of Dobrzyn, Poland.

Ann Kalinowski

My line of the Kalinowski family is actually spelt Kalinowsky. There are believed to be three brothers that immigrated to Canada. My great-great grandfather was one of them.

Vincent Kalinowsky was born in May of 1864 in Berchtol (Bergthal), Ukraine north of the Sea of Azov. He was of Polish and German descent. He married Elizabeth Feuerstein, born November 23, 1869, in Odessa, Ukraine. They had six children when they came to Canada through New York in 1905. There name was changed to Kolenosky upon their arrival in Canada. (I have at least 10 other spellings of this name if you want.) They had five more children near Leipzig, Saskatchewan where they settled in Saskatchewan. Vincent died in Leipzig in 1929.

I know the one brother of Vincent was Michael, who also immigrated to Canada. I have the address of one of his descendents if you would like more information on this side of the family.

I can also supply you with more information if you want. If you have more information on Vincent or his parents, that I don't have. Please send it to me.

Thanks,

Kyle

Re: Stephania and Anthony Kalinowski

Did Stephania and Anthony attend St. Anthony of Padua Church in Jersey City? I have a baptismal record for a Leocadiam baptised June 13, 1915 born to an Antonio K and Stephania (Borawska). Godparents were Leon Grabowski and Marianna Los. They resided at 186 Palisade in Jersey City. I am trying to determine if Anthony is a younger brother of my G-Grandfather Franciszek (Frank) Kalinowski.

Joan Kalinowski-Koch
