Dear Allison,
I saw your posting although it is 7 years old, but if you are interested in knowing of your Beavin/Kalish relatives (of which there are some of us left) let me know. Your grandmother Rose Bravin Block was my dearest Aunt Rose, who I named my son Ross after. Anyway, write back if I can be of any help you.
Your cousin,
Renee
laurelton@gmail.com

My gr-grandfather was John Kalich (could have been spelled Kalish at one time too). Don't know where he was from, only have his name on my gr-mother's marriage license. According to that paper, he married a Julia Curtis. He was from the Old Country, perhaps Hungary or Yugoslavia--no clue. They did live for a time in the coal mining town of VanMeter, Pa. Perhaps it's the same person--maybe not. Hope I helped you. He was probably born around 1870-1880 as my grandmother was born in 1899.

Have been seeking info. on grandmother, Bertha Kalish (spelled Kalisch in 1920 census), born in 1901 in VanMeter, Pa. I can find no birth records, unfortunately. The 1920 census states both parents were French and native tongue was French. Since she was a runaway, I don't know how much is true. Cannot find any correlation to France with this surname. Any help is appreciated.

KALISH/ST LOUIS MO AREA/delicatessen and confectionary

Trying to find a Kalish lineage in ST LOUIS AREA. Mr. Kalish and his wife owned a delicatessen and confectionary and he had been a tailor and a presser also. They had twodaughters and two sons from what I understand. The one daughter married and had three daughters. One son lived in St louis and managed a produce dept in the 60's. Mr. Kalish was born around 1883 and was still living from what I know in the mid 60's. His wife had passed away in her early 60's. One of their sons lived in Calif in the 60's and was in the bar and liquor supply business that he owned. One of their daughters also lived with her family in Calif. I am trying to learn the names of this line, no one seems to know. I know that Mr Kalish came here after he left czar's army and escaped with an uncle to the united states. If any of this sound at all familiar I would appreciate any help. His first name may have been Lional, but I am not sure of that
dtss@blomand.net

I would need some more info. I know that Lucy Kalish was my great-great grandmother, married to Philip Kalish. Her maiden name was Roberts. She was from England. I don't know if she met him here, or while he was in England before he came to America prior to early 1840's. I don't have all my paperwork handy, but he had a grand daughter, daughter of his son, (my great-grandfather, Rudolph Kalish). She was Lucy Kalish, and she married a man named George Aug. I think she lived right here in Cincinnati, into her 90's.
Still email if anything sounds familiar.

KTBMH

My father's mother's father was Hyman Kalish who died in Omaha in about 1890 (I have details, but don't have time to go through files at this time). Evidently he had married Rachel Knote (Knotic? Gnote?) in Boston (perhaps about 1872). Rachel was evidintly from Prausnitz (now Prusice) in Poland (Silesia). Rachel and her many children (Etta, Sarah, Annie, Millie, Rose, Leah, Abe) returned to Boston sometime (about 1892, I think). I, indeed, have photos and some other documentation. I look forward to hearing from you if the above proves to be material to your search.
Best wishes,
PHB

I'm not sure if they were speaking French, actually I don't think so.
All I know it's in my first post.
He was born in Tarnowitz - Silesia and he was sent to Romania as a mining specialist at Aurum Mining Factory.
Also I know that he had a factory in Germany and we received a letter from someone in 1970-'71 or something, to go there for legacy papers, but we couldn't answer to that because of political restrictions that were in Romania in the 70's.
If I can find something more I will answer for sure. Please do the same if you have some more info. You can use my personal e-mail address: bebi@cumulus.ro
Thank you very much.
Best regards,
Bertalan Lakner - Baia Mare - Maramures - Romania

Hi Marcy,

My Kalish info is really limited. I was able to find my grandfather's info (Blocks & Monkofsys from Lithuania), but there is no one left on my grandmother's side w/ any info. My grandmother's (born Rose Bravin, 9-11-17, I think) mother was Becky Kalish from Riga Latvia. Becky met her husband, Joseph Bravin (also from Riga) on the boat to NYC prob around 1900ish and they married & lived in New York City. My line of Kalishes seems to end there...

Good luck on your search. I posted this several months ago and almost never hear from any Kalish folk--I thought it was a more common name, but I haven't been able to find out much myself.

Best wishes,
Allison Block

KALISH (Lewis) of Brooklyn

I am searching for Ray (a woman, despite her first name) Lewis Kalish, who died in Brooklyn in 1944. She was the widow of Abraham Kalish. She had at least two children, Max and Harry L. Kalish, a lawyer, who also lived in Brooklyn.

According to her death certificate, she was from Russia. Her father's name was Lazar Lewis.

My great-grandfather David Lewis was her brother. The mystery I'm trying to solve is that he said he was born in Germany, but his sister was Russian!! Some eastern European Jews masqueraded as German Jews, because the Germans were more readily accepted. I'm wondering if my great-grandfather was one of those.

Thanks for any help!

Hello,

I am trying to track down my 2nd great grandfather,
Simon Rope (son of Herschel Libe Rope, father of
Etta Rope Lux, Max Rope, Isadore 'Frank' Rope, and Harry Rope), married to Lena Knote. I know he moved
to Omaha because his wife's family (Kalish) were there.
I have also noticed that the Omaha business records
c. 1890 show him, some other Ropes, and some Kalishes in
business (they were all tailors) in Omaha at that time.
Any Kalishes out there that know of the Omaha branch
of the family, or a Knote or Rope connection to the family
would be most appreciated.

-Todd

Kalisz surname

I got very excited when I spotted this message board. I am Polish, and my mother's maiden name is Kalisz. Probably during the years, this name was Americanized and spelled Kalish, but it is definitely Polish. It came probably from one of the oldest Polish towns, mentioned by Romans as a trading town on the amber route to the Baltic Sea (Callisia). I haven't started working on my Polish geneology yet (got tied up with my wife's Italian side), but from what I know, one of my grandparents was an American citizien but returned to Poland after 1918, when Poland got its independence. In Pland, they lived in the North-East parts, around a town called Augustow. I still have some relatives in Bridgeport, New Britain, CT.
I will be glad to answer any questions and help if I can.
