My gr. gr. grandmother Elizabeth (Schaaf?) of Hessdarmstadt came to Chambersburg in 1855-56 with son Adam, born about 1853 in Hesse, and either pregnant or with infant John Jacob, born in June 1855. She married Nickolas Kalenbach of Saxeweimar between 1855-60. He adopted the boys. The parents are incorrectly listed in the 1860 Chambersburg S. Ward Fed. Census as Nick and Lizzie Carbaugh. In 1872, Nickolas, Elizabeth and John moved to Erie, PA, and John Jacob Kallenbach (sic) married Anna List, who are together my gr. grandparents. There is a subsequent line of Kallenbachs in Erie. Does anyone have any information about what happened to Adam, who may have stayed in Franklin County, PA, or journeyed elsewhere.
