Re: Witzelroda, Germany - Kallenbach Birth Records, 1700-1793

Don, are you still active on the Kallenbach research? I used to follow posts on this, as I have German Kallenbach ancestors. Johan Casper WENZEL, a linen weaver of Kloster Allendorf, married Catharina Margarethe KALLENBACH on 17 November 1783 and had two sons - Johann Philipp born 1784 and Johann Heinrich born 1793. They appear to have lived in Kloster Allendorf where Johann Philipp - my ancestor - was born and also worked as a linen weaver before moving north to Osterwieck [in the Vorharz area]. I didn't realise how very close Kloster Allendorf was to Witzelroda and Gumpelstadt - only a few kilometres. As my Wenzel and Kallenbach ancestors married in 1783, I'm guessing Catharina was born around 1760 - 1765. Looking at your list, I see four likely candidates - 130 - Catharina Margarethe (gest. 1 Nov 1819) born 24 May 1761; 142 -Catharina Margarethe born28 September 1763; and Catharina Margaretha born 8 January 1764; and 157 - Catharina Margaretha born 16 August 1765. Is there anything in your research that elaborates on who these people married? Maybe I'm assuming too much thinking my Catharine Margarethe is one of these four, but it doesn't seem unreasonable. Kloster Allendorf is very close.

Don,
I've just started looking into my Kellenbach and other German family genealogy, having completed 3 years of research on my French Canadian heritage and came across your posting. Would you happen to know where the Henry Kallenbach you referenced settled? I have a Henry Kellenbach in my line who migrated to the US prior to 1862 and settled in Williamsport, PA. They had five children in PA, four of whom lived to adulthood. We've always known the name to be Kellenbach and we were told that he and his wife, Mary Dahl (?) were both of Prussian decent. Various census takers marked them as from Germany, Prussia and even Bavaria from census year to census year. One census actually calls out Wertemburg. My Henry was deceased prior to the 1900 census. His son, also named Henry, went on to become an Alderman in Williamsport. Would you know if this line is connected with yours?

Thanks so much,
Andrea
Hello Michael,

My family does not know who could do research for you. This has also something to do with the people in this area who are very simple and usually just minding their own business. We have no contact with other cultures or even mix with them like the American, Canadian or Australien people. Alliens will be always seen as something to keep distance at. So if somebody is aking for that kind of service, it seems strange to them because of the missing internationality. They also speak not one word of English. You have to find somebody who has knowledge of your language and has some education in the ancester field, usually in big cities.

Sincerely,
C Bruder

Hello Phil!

I just wanted to tell you that the craves in our cementery are usually destoyed after 60 years. So I could not even find my great great grandparents graves anymore. But it is still interesting.
Also, my family has rooms available. Since you have stayed already in Gumpelstadt, maybe it was even at my family (same Last Name) home. I would be glad to arrange something if you need a place.
My mom, by the way, grew up in Barchfeld.

Sincerely,
C. Bruder

Hello!

I am sorry that I did not reply to your last message, but I've moved to NYC and simply forgot about it.
However, my grandparents do not know much about the Ebert family. Everything that dates back more than a 100 years is very difficult to get info about, even the families themselves cannot remember ancesters that long ago. Perhaps because we are not that interested in ancestry since we always lived here and did not immigrate to other continents. So we just continue the family at the same place like it always was.
So maybe you have to come back again and see for yourself onesmore. I know it can be difficult because the majority does not speak English but that's all I could do for you. I wish you luck in your research.

Sincerely,
CBruder

Adam had a son George born about 1896 in Butler Co., but I think he kept the surname Kallenbaugh. Adam actually wasn't from the Kallenbach lineage himself. He was adopted by Nickolaus Kalenbach, who was born in Bad Berka, SaxeWeimar. Another post on this site says that this general area in Thuringia was Kallenbach's home territory. Good luck with your research! Sandra

Hi Claudia
Thanks for the message. I visited Gumpelstadt in 2004 but the church where my GGF was baptised was not open. However, I looked through the records at the State Archive in Eisenach but there were no records relating to Heinrich Ebert (Carl's father) ,who was the local innkeeper, coming from Gumpelstadt. So I was not able to discover any further information. I know that Carl's godfather was also a Heinrich Ebert from Barchfeld but I did'nt have time to visit there. It would be great if you can discover any information from your grandparents.
thanks
Phil Robson

Dear Mr. Blankenship
Am looking for info on Rudolph & Gustave or Augusta Kallenbach. Have traced them coming into Phila. on ship about 1882. They settled in Pottsville, PA., but cannot find where they came from in Germany. Have you run across those names? B. Lutz

I was playing a game on aol when I saw the name Kallenbach. The name is so close and the fact that my ancesters came to the US for nearly the same reasons that maybe a small part that may have split when coming to the United States. May have changed the name to avoid detection at Elis Island(my side) or with the language barrier it was changed just by chance. What I am getting at is, what are the chances that that these 2 names are actually from the same origin. I was told that my Great Great Grandfather was sent here in the early to mid 1800's to avoid being scooped up by the military at around age 13. Eventualy traveling through Germantown Pa. and the family grew in Indiana. Please let me know your opinion and let me know if you feel it is something worthwhile to do some research. Thank You

I am Danish, my mother´s family are Kallenbach´s. I have done some amateur ancestry tracking and is currently looking into the life of Hermann Kallenbach, Gandhi´s second in command in South Africa. Are you related to him - if so how, if I may ask? We are trying to find out, whether there is any connection between our family and his.

Best wishes
Thomas Pedersen

I read your entries in the Kallenbach Ancestry Board and was interested to read of a reference called "Gumpelstadt-Waldfisch 1815-1846 Kirchenbuch" that you mentioned.
This is not really South Africa but I note in earlier information from you that you have information about the Thuringia region of Germany. My g g grandfather Carl Heinrich Ebert was born in Gumpelstadt in 1858. He was one of five children born to Heinrich and Katharina (nee Helm from Salzungen). Heinrich was an innkeeper. I'm trying to discover more information about the Eberts of Gumpelstadt and was wondering if the name appears in the book or whether you had encountered the name in your research of the Kallenbach family?
Thanks
Phil Robson
Canberra Australia

His name was Konrad Kallenbach and he married Anna Margaretha Leitschuh in Gumpelstadt - one of the towns you mentioned - in 1834.
Frank married Elizabeth (Taylor) on 4 May 1887 in Clark Co., Indiana. The 1900 census shows the couple living in Monroe Tnshp., Clark Co. with four children - John (1892), Amelia (1895), Norm (1897), and Odus/Otis (1899). Anyone know where this family went to or have info on any of the children? Can't find them after 1900. Do have a Frank, widowed, living with son John on 1930 census in Virgil, Kane Co., Illinois. Is this part of the same family. Any help appreciated.

Adam Kalenbach of Chambersburg, PA

My gr. gr. grandmother Elizabeth (Schaaf?) of Hessdarmstadt came to Chambersburg in 1855-56 with son Adam, born about 1853 in Hesse, and either pregnant or with infant John Jacob, born in June 1855. She married Nickolas Kalenbach of Saxeweimar between 1855-60. He adopted the boys. The parents are incorrectly listed in the 1860 Chambersburg S. Ward Fed. Census as Nick and Lizzie Carbaugh. In 1872, Nickolas, Elizabeth and John moved to Erie, PA, and John Jacob Kallenbach (sic) married Anna List, who are together my gr. grandparents. There is a subsequent line of Kallenbachs in Erie. Does anyone have any information about what happened to Adam, who may have stayed in Franklin County, PA, or journeyed elsewhere. Sandra Pinches of Portland, OR, grandaughter of Edna Kallenbach Lambrecht of Erie.

He married a Katherina Speck (b. 1828, Ittlingen, Baden, Germany) in 1859. They ended up in White Co., IL. Andreas died there in 1872 and Katherina in 1900.
