Entire family came from the Berlin and Pommerania region, my grandfathers name was Willy Fritz Kamin. We researched our family all the way to the highland and Germania times.

Kamen in Chicago, immigrated 1860s

(I know the spelling’s different, but since I found one marriage record under “Kamey” and another record under “Hamen,” this spelling difference seemed small enough to ask you folks … just in case.)

Looking for siblings or parents of James Kamen.
Born 1842 as Vaclav Kamen (or von Kamen)
Birthplace listed as Bohemia or Austria in various records.

He had at least 2, possibly 3 younger brothers. He immigrated with them and their mother (possibly named Mary) to Chicago around 1866-68. Their father had died shortly before they immigrated to U.S.

James/Vaclav remained in Chicago.

1st marriage: to Katerina; they had daugher Mary. Katerina died along with 2nd child, Vaclav Anton.

2nd marriage: to Frances (Franziska) Hurtova or Hurt. Their children included James, Rose, Barbara, Frank, Bess, Emma, John.

Thanks for any information,
Patt
Hello,, there are truly Kamins who stayed in Chicago. They are my grandparents. So the Fred, you see there in Chicago stayed in Chicago.. Fred Kamin, married Lillian Bending in 1924. This Fred Kamin has a brother Herman, Sister Hulda, and sister Selma. They came from Germany, immigrated in the 1850's. Fredricks mothers name was Hulda as well. They lived on 21st place in Chicago,, There is a draft card WWI on file for this Fredrick as well, showing his Chicago address. I wish I could be more help to you for the many other Kamin lines. I'm sure somewhere they will all connect up in the grand schme of things.
Robin

I've been looking at 2 Frederick Kamins from Illinois. One born October 18, 1883 and son Fred born May 29, 1909. 1910 Census has them in Chicago, but as of 1918 they are in ClevelandCuyahoga County, Ohio and both died in that county. Elder Fred had wife Louise(nee Friehage). Now as where they fit into my family? Have no clue. My mom had saved many things of my grandfather's. They are both gone, so cannot ask them. One is a postcard from Cleveland. Has to be early 1900's. They lived at 2158 W. Blvd. in Cleveland. This address is where elder Fred was for WWI Draft Registration in 1918. There is no stamp on the card, as the addresed section only says Marie and Gertrude, my cousins.Assuming card was actually mailed in an envelope. Louise Kamin is the writer. Now, Fred and Louise also had a daughter Louise born about 1907, but I don't think it could be from her? My grandfather was Martin Urban(originally Urbanski) and his mom was Marie/Maria/Mary Lesinski,/Lechinski and other various spellings. Assuming Kamin was probably shortened also from Kaminski or similar?

Some time ago I tried to research my realtives, Kamin/Kamien who settled in the Chicago area. They were Rudolph Kamin and his wife Johanna Schalk. It got nowhere. If you have a database on Chicago Kamins, I would like to see if we fit together in any way. Have you ever seen these names among your Kamins? I have some documents from Germany regarding the births of some of their children who were born there, while others were born in Chicago. Contact by e-mail at <jrmcbm@shaysnet.com>.

By any chance, would there have been an ERNESTINE GREINKE in your information? She married Ernst HAFER, I only know of one son, Herrmann F., b. 1825, Pommern, Germany. Herrmann would be my Great-grandfather. Ran into a dead-end on the Hafer side, hoping the Greinke's can help me out!

Sure cousin Rich, I can give you the data on those 7 generations of Grienke. Look in your WORD.DOC files. The seven generations is what you sent me via a .doc attachment to your 22 December 2000 email to me. :-) Thanks again.
By the way, here is an outstanding resource for anyone researching the Chicago area, or Illinois in general. When searching for Kamin, Greinke, Kusch or anyone, try every combination you can think of, or just the first part of surnames. By luck I found relatives with names so miss-spelled or so different than those given my family stories, that they were almost unrecognizable. For example, beside the simple reversal of the e & i in Greinke, some are under the name Grunke. I've found it best to use only a surname of the male then the maiden name of the female, even though it results in longer lists from their database:

Illinois Statewide Marriage Index 1763 - 1900
http://www.cyberdriveillinois.com/cgi-bin/archives/marriage....

======== Art Klinger === aklinger@flash.net =====
Yes. I have been researching the Chicago Kolodzik's for 10 years. Fred C was Friedrich Christian Kolodzik who migrated to Chicago from Krokow, West Prussia. Friedrich was born 9/23/1843 and died 3/26/1911. He had a son Friedrich Christian also, born 10/8/1883. They had a coal business on the near north side of Chicago, and pulled coal in with a horse and wagon. He was my gr-grandfather. Could you send me a picture? If you do not want the safe, I would be interested. Who was your grandfather? Maybe another link to my family

I was interested that there is a Kamin board. I am a Kamin also. My grandfather was Karl Emil Kamin, born in West Prussian, Germany in 1868. As far as we know he came to Chicago and then on to MN where he was a farmer. He had 11 children. Wife was Johanna Wessoleck. She also came from West Preussen. You say that that is now part of Poland?
I have no idea if Karl came over with any brothers or not. He came to US in 1884. Kathryn

Kamin of Chicago area

I have distant Kamin relatives who originated in Kreis Lauenberg, Hinter, Pommern, Germany. Gustav Kamin was father of Johanna Kamin born 04Dec1857 in Koppenow. She married Johann Herman Greinke on 18Jan1877, and gave birth to Anna Greinke. Anna married Albert Frederick Kusch in Chicago on 28Nov1908. This couple in turn gave birth to Lydia Elizabeth "Ella" Kusch, who married my great-uncle Joseph John Klinger on 03Mar1934. We have more info. I hope some of this sounds familiar.
