Sharon, thank you for your note. My information on the first two children, Seth and Charles, comes from the 1860 census for IL, Iroquois, Concord TWP. Seth is not listed on the 1870 census for the same TWP. Also, the family name is spelled CAINE. If you are willing to share, I would like an updated gedcom for our Kane family. I will share mine also, don't know if I have anything new, but will share anyway. I really do appreciate your exchange of family information. I have not worked much on genealogy, too many irons in the pot. Howard

Hi Howard,
yes, you heard from me via email several times. I even sent you my gedcom file on Kane You have to remember that the census takers did the writing, and the interviewing...so one has to take that with a little bit of salt. As for the spelling of the name Mariah/Maria/Marah. She could not even write her name she signed with an X. So, I can tell you her name is not Maria, it is only spelled that way on the later census. Actually, her and Aarons name on their marriage certificate is spelled "cane". An interesting note is this, Ephriam died 6/1844, 2months after their last child was born and they/or she named him Aaron F. Kane, after his brother and her husband 8 years later. Which was quite common in those days. I would like to know where you got your info on the the first two children below, if it's not too much trouble.
Thanks,
Sharon Kane Remund

So you're a Sandgroper? A Westralian? I must check what Aussie records I may have. Funnily enough though I probably have more records from the Galway/Roscommon area. And should you happen to be a male line Cane/Cain/Kane (my family used all those names too), we can compare DNA too. You can email me direct at rory.cain@defence.gov.au if you wish
Cheers
Rory

William Cain/Kane

Hi Phil, I think I can help. Where you have a Thomas son of William, I have a William (Cain)son of Thomas (Kane). Dates are similar to your family. I have both the paper trail and DNA for a Kane family from Co Roscommon (now in the USA) who tie in with my family and I think tie in with yours.
I found only one parish in Co Roscommon where Cain/Kane and Noon appear together. The same parish that the family of my DNA match lived. Indeed, the same townland even. So it matters little that your family left about the same time that the parish registers commence (my US Kane relations left later so they appear in parish records, confirming this parish). We can still establish a DNA match, and that would connect you to the same parish.
Email me at rory.cain@defence.gov.au for further information.

Hi, I have been looking through all these old posts. I am a distant cousin too. Andrea and I have traded loads of info. My branch is directly descended from A.P. Kane. He was my grandmother's grandfather. The Kanes basically stayed in the WI area from then on till my mother's generation. I grew up in Iowa. I am very interested , if you area still trading research, on any early information prior to A.P. Kane.

I have a William Cain/Kane (b. 1808-1812) married to Mary Noon (b. 1802-1812), both of County Roscommon, Ireland. They had their first children (Thomas, Ellen, Anne, Mary) in Ireland and emigrated to the US ca. 1840-41. They first settled in Monmouth Co., New Jersey, where they had John, Dennis, Catherine, William and Cecilia. They then settled in Lake Co., Illinois ca. 1856. Does anyone have insights into William's parents (or Mary Noon's for that matter)?

Catherine --

Don't know if there's any connection, but there are some interesting similarities in our research. My Kane/O'Kane
family (ggf Bernard) is from Maghera parish, Gorteade townland, about 4 miles NE of the town of Maghera. They were RC and had a small tenant farm there up until about 1862, when they migrated to Gateshead, Durham Co., England. I don't know of any Margaret in the family, but there were other nuclear Kane/O'Kane families who also worked the Gorteade farm, and in the surrounding area. In 1883 the oldest son of Bernard's family, Neil (then 31 yrs old), married Sarah Diamond in Jarrow, Durham County. If you'd like to discuss further, please contact me directly at timoka@email.com --

Tim Kane, Seattle
He was definitely not a chemist, but hauled coal until he lost his leg in the war. Don't know what he did after that, but I doubt it was chemistry.

Thanks for the idea though!

Karen

The John Kane that I have, had his children in Glasgow. He had 7 children: Andrew, George, Thomas, Mary, Jean, Patrick and Frank (not in that order).

He got married in 1894, and had his children up until about 1911.

I don't have a death date for his wife at this point, so I don't know if he remarried after having his kids.

Does that help you to know if it's the same person?

Karen

Wrong century, but I have a John Wesley O'Kane (deceased around 1995)Canada, my late Father-in-law born about 1940 around Murillo, Ontario, Canada. My Husband died as well at 34 in 2000 and I am trying the trace family history for my Children. They were 5 and 7 when their Father died.

I think his Father was a James and he had a James as a brother. He also had a couple of sisters, details are sketchy at this time. I had heard John Wesleys Father had died in a house fire, and there was rumor of an ancestor who was a Captain, or held position, in the Navy. He had 4 Sons James Joseph (deceased), John, Alec, and Mark(deceased), and 2 Daughters Catherine and Margaret. All born to his Wife Carolyn Green in the 60's. Honestly, they were staunch Catholics and still raged on about the English and the English stealing land in the 80's's when I met them.

Right now, it is all a mystery. I am just starting to look at that line and I am new at this. We have ordered Y-DNA tests for my Son, Logan John O'Kane, son of James Joseph, to give more answers and will sign up with the Ulster and surname project. I would be happy to share any info we may glean.

Not sure if this may be of help to anyone, or ring a bell...but I thought I'd try...peace...

I have an original postcard photograph of “Russell Dennis Kane – 11 months - 1917”, which I’d like to get back to descendants or family members.

I found Russel D. Kane, age 14, in the 1930 census of New Cumberland (Cumberland Co.) PA. He was son of Andrew G. and Elizabeth E. Kane. IN 1920, family lived in Lower Allen (Cumberland Co.) and Russell D. was shown in the 1/28/1920 census as being three years, 10 months old, indicating his birthdate was March 1916.

Get back to me at margerice@prodigy.net if you are related to Russell Dennis Kane.

Hello! I am trying to get information regarding my grandfather, John Mathias Kane. I believe the facts to be:

Born in Winser on Feb. 1, 1900;
Lived in Alaska during World War II;
Children lived in Idaho during war;
Died in Washington and Buried in Family Plot in Winser;
Mother - Elizabeth (?)
Sister - Marcella (?)

Any information anyone has would be greatly appreciated. I have come to a standstill. In my original notes I had his name as Harry but I was told that is not correct. So I believe that there must be a Harry connection!

Thank you and looking forward to any feedback!!

Re: Kane of Co Kildare

A Google search will bring you a Cane family from Larabryan, Co Kildare; and a Cane/Kane family from Maynooth, Co Kildare. One of these families has a pedigree (probably fabricated) going back to the Kanes of Ulster. Every southern Irish Cane/Kane/Keane family who wanted an impressive pedigree did that during the Victoria era. So it is interesting what DNA is uncovering: previously undiscovered Kane clans from the south with no connection to Ulster, & their own distinctive DNA pattern. The Ulster Kanes account for 1/3rd of the membership of the Cain DNA project at www.familytreedna.com, but the newest member, from near Kildare, does npt match their DNA.

I posted the original query but that profile is outdated. I should have been notified of your reply but wasn't.

My cousin, Clifford, could have moved to Missouri. One of his aunts and a first cousin moved from Chicago to Kirkwood, Missouri. I still have not been able to locate either brother, but I was told they both worked for the Illinois Central Railroad for a long time. That's the only reason I did not pursue them out of Illinois. I haven't heard mention of a Donald Merritt Kane in my Kane family, but you never know.
