Interesting. I was just looking at my grandmother's immigration record on the same website. At least, I think it's hers. She was born in 1888 and came to the United States at the age of 18 in 1906 or 1907 from Galician Poland. The city on the record says Wachorzelewska. I googled the city and only came up with the one entry I am replying too. I can reasonably ascertain that this is her if I can figure out that it is within 20 miles of Stasiowka which is the village my grandfather came from (they were from nearby villages according to family stories). Do you know if your Katherine Kania is buried in Rhinelander, Wisconsin?

Gilbert and Audrey Kania

My Grandfather is Gilbert Kania (1924-1979). He lived in IL and WI. He was married once before my Grandmother Audrey, to his first cousin. They had a child named Gilbert Martin Kania Jr. Eventually Gilbert and his cousin divorced. She remarried and the son took the new husbands last name. I believe he is now Gilbert Martin Darcy. Gilbert was married to a woman named Geraldine and living in IL when he passed away. I can't locate her either. Any information would be helpful. I believe Geraldine to be born around 1944. Her maiden name is Zimmerman and she was remarried after my Grandfathers death.

Hi gammawk,
I just got the note from ancestry.com that you had replied to my posting from 2004. Thanks for replying- I had forgotten all about my posting. My mom, Pat, is Mabel's daughter and she was here when I read your reply. She was really excited to see it as she didn't know that I had been digging around a little bit.

We don't have as much about the Kania side of the family so anything you have would be great to know. My uncle, Jim Sweeney, died last year. It would be nice to share any information that you have about the Kania family with my remaining uncle and his wife while we can. They, and their kids and grandkids, have tried to find out more in the past without much luck.

In some mementos that Mabel left we came across a few pictures, one of which is a picture of my mom, Mabel, and Mabel's mom from about 1950. I have converted into a digital file and would be happy to send it, and a few others of the family if you're interested. My email address is sjc427@comcast.net.

i hope to hear from you soon!
Sue

sjc427 Please post again! I would like to know more about your side of the family. My husband is the grandson of Laurinda Kania and we are putting together a family tree. Thank you for the info on your grandmother Mabel. We used to write back and forth with Hugo before his death. Sorry that it took me so long to reply. I have both sides of each one of our families going and sometimes I get confused as to where I have posted. Thank you so much!

Barbara, I too have a connection to an Adam Kania from DuBois, Illinois (not far from Nashville). My Adam's mother was my grand aunt Martha Skurat and his father was John Kania. John was born abt. 1890 in Illinois. I am trying to find out what happened to John as well as a daughter (per St. Charles Borromeo microfilm) named Appolonia. I wonder if Adam is John Leuning's father. However, I believe I was told that he was never married.

Migdal family from Bochnia area

My relatives came to the US (Buffalo NY) from the Bochnia area around 1905-13 and were named Migdal. Perhaps there is a connection, I do not kow much about their early history, except that my grandmother used to speak of the Czartoryski family a lot and I beleive that she played with a young Czartoryski Hrabina (sp?) when she was a child.

I'd appreciate any information on the Migdal family from this area.

Donna, Hi, My name is Gary Noncek, son of Frank (born Anthony) & Angela Noncek (nee Lipinski) my Aunt is Lee Kratofil (nee Lipinski), my grandfather was Francis Noncek. We believe he came as an orphan from Alsace-Lorraine, but was of Polish ancestry; we have reason to believe he came from Poczan poland. We believe he came to the US around 1870; his first wife was a Anna Madaj; she died, and he married my grandmother Therese Prange. They lived in Chicago, Ill. they had three children late in life - Honore, Francis and Ted. My Grandfather died around 1927 from pneumonia; he was a forman with a coal company in Chicago at the time. let me know if there may be some connections. Thanks!

Hello... i believe we know something about this subject. My grandmother's name was Aniela Migdal, (she is my mother's mother) she come from Brzeznica near Bochnia, Krakow.

She had a brother whos name was Ludwig and I believe he emigrated to USA before 1st world war He lived in Buffalo. We currently live in London but are in touch with our Polish Side. Infact Aniela Migdal's daughter Janina Janik (my mother) is celebrating her 90th birthday this christmas 2005.

Could be a connection but you'll need to confirm some of the information. If you can connect yourself to Ludwig Migdal then welcome to the family :) .
You can contact us via my email to discuss this further. shaolindreams@hotmail.com

First she went to the Berkshire Hills to meet her brother, Jan, and then moved to Lawrence, Massachusetts where she lived out her life. I haven't found a Zophia in my family line, but that doesn't mean one doesn't exist. All the other information seems to match. Let's compare notes! They came from Buczkowice, the ship's manifest lists their father in Buczkowice as Josef Kania.

Kania in Krakow

I have been able to locate my great grandmother's immigration record on ellisisland.org. The problem is the name of the town is illegible on the record, and I am unable to locate the city using the name as it is listed by the site.

Has anyone ever heard of Wachorzelewska. It should be somewhere near Krakow. On the actual handwritten record the city looks like Wochorzdsowska. At the time it was written (May 1907) it was listed as Galicy, Poland.

Her name is Katarzyna Kania, born January 25, 1888.

Any help is greatly appreciated.

Thank you!

Carol, I know it's been two years plus since you posted this message, but I just found this web site. I hope you are still out there some where. My name is Greg Kania and I live in San Diego, California. My father was Dick Kania so I suppose that would make you my Cousin. Unfortunatly my family lost touch with with the East Coast Kania's after my father passed away in 1981. We had a brief period of communication around 1990 or so but that faded. I have had no communication with my Aunt's, Uncle's or Cousins since my early teens. I don't have much information on Walter, just some old pictures. I do know that he died when my father was around seventeen or so. I do hope you are still out there some where so we can make contact. Please e-mail me back! Greg

He enlisted at Nashville Sept 25, 1944, and was killed by enemy fire. Following a military funeral, he was buried in the 77th Division cemetery on Okinawa.

Survivors include: his parents, a brother Daniel and a sister Eleanor. I was told that Slovak people did not carry Bibles that they carried Prayer Books of all the Saints instead. My Great Grandmother had one. The only Spelling of the name on my side was Kana which had a half moon between the n and the a at the end . Also Kania. I sometimes have trouble getting into this site. I would appreciate any information you could send me. ESulli9122@aol.com

Laurinda Kania was my Grandmother's sister. All of your dates are a perfect match, as well as the parents. My Grandmother was Mabel Louise Kania and she was born in 1910. There were also 2 brothers who were older than Mabel, but I don't have theie birth years. They were Hugo Kania and Lehman Kania. Lehman and Mabel performed in skating exhibitions as teenagers. Lehman was also a lifeguard and drowned while attempting to rescue a man who panicked. At least that is the story that my mother remembers. Mabel Kania married Peter Eugene Sweeney, 8/22/1927, in Wausau, Wisconsin. They had 4 children. Eugene Connie (Con) Sweeney, James Owen Sweeney, Patricia (Sweeney) Kaiser, and John Charles (Chuck) Sweeney. Chuck died in his early thirties from a heart attack. If you would like more information regarding the grandchildren, etc. please email.
