E. Harris:

One female of my Wahl line married into a Kantner family. I do not know of your people but did find the son of the
Wahl/Kantner marriage. His name is Michael M. Kantner. Upon contacting Michael he E-mailed me that he wanted nothing to do with his family's genealogy so I have not attempted to contact him since. His mother, Virginia Marston Wahl, had died about a year before I found them at 6048 Woodward Avenue, Maywood,CA 90270 on 14 February 2004. A Wahl family tree noting Michael's father is attached.
Ralph L. Sabiers sabiers@aol.com

In my previous message I failed to mention that Mary Kentner (if she married Henry Dugan) lived in and around Tipton County, IN. They had two sons: Christopher Columbus (Lum) Dugan in 1880 and Wilfrd Winfield Scott Dugan in 1883. She is listed as their mother on several documents, but I can't find any records of her.
Thanks
Sheila Smith

Don't have a screen name for you that works but interested if you ever found who was the son of John Nicholas Kantner and Magdalena Berkheiser? I had concluded that it was John N. Kantner b/10/19/1807 who married Hannah Hoover and moved to Selinsgrove about 1835 along with Hannah's parents George Hoover and Hannah Reisel. John Nicholas Kantner worked a coal mine out on Peach Mountain and he died in 1830 and is buried at Flowery Field cemetery out on Peach Mountain. Magdalena later married a Charles Moll. John N. Kantner and Hannah Hoover are my gg grandparents and I had not been able to trace them back to Schuyllkill Co. but find the ages are a good fit but have not other proof. Hope to hear from you... Robert Kantner.. KantnerRF@aol.com...........

I think you misread the name, or it was misprinted in the index. The 1860 census shows a Jesse Kantner in Branch Twp. with wife Elizabeth, and children Mary J., Jefferson P., Margaret, and John. Keep in mind that the first 's' of a double 'ss' was often written in a way that looks somewhat like an 'f'. In any case, I think this is who you are referring to. This may or may not be the same as the Josiah Kantner who appears in Cass Twp. in the 1850 census (Jesse was a nickname for Josiah), since the children's names don't quite match up.

I don't think this Jesse is related to me, except perhaps distantly, but I came across this in researching other Kantners in Schuylkill Co.

Diane - yes, I looked at my records to verify that my grandmother had a brother Frank. Catherine Elizabeth Kantner married James P Kelly III on May 29,1929 in St Clair, PA. He was a printer by trade and had his own print shop next to the house they lived in on Front St. Her family was also in St Clair and they lived on a hill on the East side of town that is and was known as "Kantner's Hill" because their house was the only one up there for many years.

I have found it very difficult to track back much further than "Tipe", but I do have some leads. Funny about the 1860 census though. It's been a few years since I did that research at the National Archives in DC, but they have books there to help you find your ancestor in the census files, and Tipe was printed in one of the indexes just like that. Probably a misreading of it when the printed index was produced?

Anyway, I am glad to have the information and would like to see what we have that could help each other. Feel free to email me at takelly1999@yahoo.com. I will do the same with your address.

It's even easier than that. I believe Frank Kantner was a brother to my paternal grandmother, Catherine Elizabeth Kantner, b. 1903. She married James P. Kelly and they had 7 children, the second one being my father.

My great-grandfather Henry Dugan was in the 1880 census listed with Mary J. Willson and child. Henry and Mary were not married. I have reason to believe that Mary and Henry had another child in 1883 and that child was my grandfather Wilfred Winfield Scott Dugan. He was called Scott. I am reaching a dead end when it comes to finding my great-grandmother Mary. She has been listed as Mary Cantner (Kentner) and now I find the name Mary J. Will (incomplete)on 1880 census for Tipton, IN. Anyone with any information?

I was born and raised in Elwood,IN. My grandparents were John "Art" & Margaret Kantner. Both are now deceased. The only other Kantners that I know of in Alexandria,IN are my paternal uncle, John A. Kantner,Jr. My great-grandfather was John Albert Kantner, and my great-grandmother was Myrtle Kantner. Both of them are buried in the Elwood Cemetery. I have visited the village of Kantner in Pennsylvania, but it has been close to 25 years since. Would like more info on this tiny village if anyone has it.

Hi Tom - I do believe it's a match, check the 1860 census again and you will see it isn't Tipe but Jake Kantner, 44 years of age. It was really hard to read. Frank Kantner was my Grandfather (brother to Elizabeth). I remember the Kelly's from Saint Clair, they had a print shop. Really don't know alot about the Kantner's but attempting to learn. Thanks for the help!!! (dmcrowe@ptd.net)

From the 1900 Census, Roberts father was Frank Kantner and mother was Mary. There were 5 brothers at that time, John, Robert, George, Frank and Benjamin. In 1900 the family was living in Burgess Twp., Bond Co., Illinois. Looks like in 1930 Robert was 40 years old and not married but had his mother Mary living with him in Highlands, Madison Co., Illinois. Census records indicate both Frank and Mary and their children were born in Illinois but both parents of both Frank and Mary were born in Germany. They were not descended from the Berks Co., Pennsylvania Kantners.. Robert Kantner......
