Hi....My Grandmother was Maria Kantalainen..
Her husband was Viktor Kantalainen and they lived in Ashtabula Ohio, are you sure of the last name ? Viktor came to America 1897 and Maria with children Franz and Alma, came later..Had more children
Thought I would take a chance to see if maybe this would match...

I FOUND HILDA KONTIAINEN LIVING WITH MY PARENTS IN 1920. IT SAYS SHE WAS FROM FINLAND AND SHE WAS THE MAID. I DON'T KNOW AS THEY COULD HAVE AFFORDED A MAID BUT IS PROBABLY A FINNISH FRIEND. John, Johanna and Hjalmer all emigrated in 1903, they were farmers.
That is the only Hyvälä/Hyvala name I could find. I could not find one on the emigrant register in Finland either! Perhaps they went through Russia. I see that her husband and one son were born in Norway so they must have lived there before emigrating.

She was born in Sodankyla Finland on March 17, 1874. She was 71 years old. She came to America in 1903.
Survivorns are John E. Kantola, 5 boys, Henry, Hjalmar, Hon Edwin and Melvin. 4 daughters, Mrs Miina Avidsen, Mrs Ina Peterson, Mrs Mamie Anderson, Mrs Edna Makela.

I would like to have some more information from my relatives.

Jaakko Kantola b. 2.6. 1869 from Kauhava Finland arrived in
USA 1893 and his wife Adolfina Kantola b. 6.12.1870 arrived with daughter Hilja Kantola b. 18.8.93 also in USA 1905 .
One daughter Bertta Adolfiina Kantola (my grandmother) was
born 24.10.1907 in Conneaut , Ohio .
Hilja Kantola married with Emil Niemi, children Leo R. Niemi and Theodore Niemi.

Jaakko Kantolas brother Wilhelm Kantola b.12.12.1876 d. 1.4.1965 Kingsville, Ohio. Wilhelm has children : Voitto and Kerttu , whereabouts unknown.

Antti Jaakko Kantola aka. Jacob Anders Kandoll
Born 24 Aug 183, Simo, Oulun Loani, Finland. Emigrated 1868. Spent five years in Michigan before moving to Oregon/Washington.

"The name of Kandoll was not used until Jacob became a citizen of the United States according to Mabel. The judge wrote down Kandoll instead of Kantola probably because he could not understand the Finnish pronunciation. Jacob was to afraid to ask him to change the spelling."

"Questions have arisen as to the whereabouts of the brother who emigrated with him and if we could locate him because of the different spellings of the name. We do not know the brother's name."

I'm curious if any of Elizabeth Kentola's children go to this site. The Kentola's moved from Floodwood Mn. to Lawler Mn. in the 1950's. They moved to the state of Washington after that, I believe. I have a lot of fond memories and it would be fun to relive some of the moments.

She married Juho Kytömäki. On her passport records I got from the Institiute of Migration they were from Ylistaro. So, I would assume that is where she lived with Juho and their daughter Helmi (b. 1892).

Trying to locate any information on Jani/johanas kantola born in Finnland 11/29/1883. He came to the US when he was about 24yrs old (1907?) He lived in Ironwood MI. He married Elizabeth "Lisi" Mattila, also born in Finland 4/18/1884. She lived in Kortjarvi (Alahama?) Finland. She Married Jani in Minneapolis I think. They had 2 children in Ironwood, Pearl and Arne. My grandfather, Arne was born 3/19/1910. They moved to Plummer MN when Arne was 18months old. They had 4 more children..Silvia,Mamie,George, and Roy.
Arne married Emeline Margaret Johnson in Minneapolis in 1934. Emeline was born 3/27/1915 in Mpls, MN. Her parents were Emil Johnson and wife Mary. I believe they were from Finnland /or Sweeden. I don't have any history on the Johnson side. Arne and Emeline had 4 children in Plummer MN. Arne Raymond 9/25/35, Johanne 3/1938, LeeRoy Robert born 1939 and my father Roger John born 12/19/1940. I know the family grew up in plummer. Arne was a roofer and farmer and eventually brought the family to Sacramento Cal., then to Applegate Oregon in the early 1960's.
Any help would be great.
