You're not kidding...small world! Thank you for responding. I am in the process of tracing all the descendants from my grandfather's siblings. There are quite a few in and around Chicago and in St Louis, MO. Please send me your direct e-mail address so I can avoid going through ancestry.com. You can contact me at mrossmanmi@earthlink.net I have a number of cousins in Des Plaines, Chicago and Elgin. Are you located anywhere near any of this locations. My nephew lives in Oswego.
Eva Rossmann, who married Jakob Kappel is the only child of my great uncle Johann "Hans" Rossmann that did not immigrate to the US. I have contacted Eva Kappel Peter through the assistance of cousins in Munich and Landshut, Germany. I am still waiting for a reply since I was told their research has to be translated. It's going on two years now and I am beginning to get a bit impatient. However, I do understand that genealogy does not interest everyone, but if you've been "bitten" you'll understand how addictive this hobby can be. I am not at my home computer since the hard drive crashed some time ago. So I borrow everyone else's when I'm visiting. I'll take a look at what I have assembled and see how you connect. Please keep in touch. I do plan on visiting the Illinois branches when the weather improves and I would certainly enjoy meeting with you. Here is my telephone number if you would like to speak in person 586-777-9578. Leave a message and I'll gladly call you back.

Marty
mrossmanmi@earthlink.net

I am Kerry, the youngest daughter of Stanley E. Kappel (born Donald Angus Buckingham). I would love to be able to contact relatives from his side of our family. He died of cancer when I was two years old, and we have had little contact with his family. We met Dora and one of her sons when I was younger, but have lost touch with them. I live in Seattle, my sister Kristen lives in Bellingham and my oldest sister, Karen lives in France. Stanley married my mother, an American, whom he met when he was working as a mining engineer in Ecuador, and she was a nurse.
I would greatly appreciate learning the information you have gained about Stanley's siblings and nieces and nephews, our cousins and second cousins.

Gratefully, Kerry

Angie - Thanks for your reply. In the nearly 4 years since I started my family history research (wow!) and posted this query, I have learned more about the German colonies in Russia where my family originated. I believe you are correct about the "Happy Valley" translation. ALT means "old" - they added this to the village name when a new (NEU) Freudental was established years later - to help distinguish between the two.

Thanks again for your interest!

Hi Suzanne,

I got back from TN, friday. I talked to your Uncle Randy, Sunday, but he didn't have your phone number. I thought that I would call you and let you know that I was back and ready to do some informational sharing. I just read your message about your Gr Gr grandfather being killed in the mines in West VA. My Great Great Grandfather (your great great great grandfather, I think) was captured byh Rebels in April 1862, in Fayatte County, West Va. (then VA) That is real story to tell. I have all of his civil war documents. This is John (Fanny's husband's) father. I also have pictures of John, Fanny adn the whole family, taken in Meigs Co in 1902. In this picture, I think there is still one person still living.

Hey, call anytime-- tonight untill 11:00 or anynight untill 11:00 is always OK, or most days from 9:00 am to noon I am almost always at my desk.

Take care & God Bless.

P.S. I remember that Arron Young, use to be the Pastor or youth director at your church....is he still there?

John Kappel & Sarah Francis Boley were my great grandparents. They met in Virginia during the civil war. John had been wounded and Sarah Francis (often called Fanny) found him and nursed him for days until she had the courage to tell her parents he (the Yankee) was in hiding in the barn. Later they were married (I have preached in the church they were married in -- in Virginia. Well there is to much to type, I'll have to share the rest of the story another time or another way, perhaps by phone. I have John & Sarah's obituarys on file. Please feel free to give me a call at 740-374-9098, I will be glad to share all that I have on them with you....

Sincerely,
Rev. R. Keith Kapple...

Hi Keith!
It's great to hear from you. As I type, I am preparing to be knocked out and have my tooth yanked out. ha ha! I'm sorry that Uncle Randy didn't have my number. I would have thought that he did. My mom is so excited about finding out all this information and about finding a relative in you. We are planning to call tomorrow night (Thursday night). My mom might have to do the talking, considering my tooth situation. She wanted me to tell you to be prepared because she is the emotional type and cries over kleenex comercials, not to mention finding something as wonderful as this.
We hope to talk to you very soon. We can't wait!
Suzanne & Shirley
P.S. Aaron Young was indeed our youth minister for a time. He is now preaching in Nevada. He was home just a few weeks ago to preach the funeral of one of our church members, and may in fact still be in the area. I heard that he was vacationing here and catching up with his own family, though I am not sure of the actual dates of his stay.

I can't tell you how excited I am to get your message. I am 24 and researching my grandfather's family with my mother. I am decended from John and Fanny's daughter Caroline. She married Ottis Piles and had a son George who was my great grandfather. Until a year ago we knew of only two relatives on my grandfather's side, so this means a lot to us. I have been to John and Fanny's grave in New Burlingham cemetery recently. I would love to talk more about the family with you. I have written down your number. If you could let me know of a time that would be good for you to talk, I would love to give you a call. Again, thanks so very much.

I am amazed! I know that it might sound silly, but I can't tell you how excited I am. My grandfather, Charles, was an only child as you probably know and he always told my mother that he basically had no family. For whatever reason, most likely the fact that he never had a good realtionship with his own father, he had no idea that he had such a family. It would have meant so much to him to have known all of this. You are absolutely right with your information on my family. My uncle Randy did eventually get married, in 1990 if I am thinking correctly. He married Aimee Wolfe, and has two children, Charley Keith and Stefany Morgan. He and Aimee are recently divorced. I realize that you know so much more than I do already, but if there is anything about my section of the family that I could help you with, I would be more than happy to do so. Again, thanks so much. My family and I are busy with the weekend, but I do plan on calling at the first of the week, if that would be ok.

Mr. Kappel,

I wasn't able to make it home before eleven tonight.
Yes, I do still live in Meigs County, the Minersville area to be exact. All of my mom's siblings live in the county except for her brother Charles Jr. (we call him Buddy). He lives in Gallia County. We attend the Racine First Baptist Church, as does my Aunt Sharon and her children. It is the same church that my grandparents, Charles and Shirley Lorene attended until their deaths. I am not sure if you are aware, but my grandfather was Mayor of Racine for 24 years, serving his last term just months before his death.
I am not sure how much you know about my branch, but I am more than willing to tell you all I know if you are interested.
I plan to call during the day on Friday after you have returned from your travels.
I have tried to reach the above poster by email without any luck. Here is the reply to her query... From her obit.
Mary Emma Kappel was born July 31, 1861 in Henry Co, IL and departed this life October 20, 1923 at the age of 62 years, 2 months and 19 days.

Her girlhood days were spent in Page Co., Iowa. In 1876 she was united in marriage to James H. Stiverson. For a few years they made their home in Page Co., and in 1883 moved to Barnes, Kansas then to Irving where she spent the remaining years of her life. To this union were born seven children.

Jacob, who died in infancy, Samuel who died in young manhood, and five who survive her: Frank Stiverson of Waterville, Kansas, Mrs. Effie Odle of Marysville, and Mrs. H. Rosman, James Stiverson and George Stiverson of Irving. She also leaves (illegible 11?) grandchildren, 3 sisters, 3 brothers: Mrs William Murrell of Bigelow, Mrs. Levi Piper of Leedy, OK., Mrs. Alice Oates of Kansas City, John Keppel of Waldo, Kansas, George Kappel of Clearfield, IA and Dan Kappel of Union Nebraska.

Best Wishes To Cousin Teri...
I am researching my grandfather's family surnames: FRITZ and HEID.

My great grandparents were John Michael and Anna Katherine HEID-FRITZ. John Michael Fritz's parents were Louis and Magdelene DURMER-FRITZ. Anna Katherine Heid was the daughter of Philip and Christine BUEHLER-HEID.

Philip Heid son of John and Mary WAGNER-HEIDT.
Christine daughter of John and Caroline KAPPEL.

I am interested in sharing any information about these families. I have been wanting to go to the cemetery there as I am sure there are Heid's, Fritz's, and Buehler's buried there. I do not know very much at all about the Kappel family other than a few names that I have found. If I send you a photo by email, maybe you can tell me who it might be. I found it in my Grandfathers photo album and no one knows who the lady is. She is probably be one of the names listed above. Let me know if you would like to view it.
Need Info on George and/or Jean Kappel

My aunt, Florence Wiebe, lived in the area of Wetaskiwin, Alberta, Canada when she was a young girl.

She eventually married a man named George Kappel. Their son, also with the first name of George, married a woman whose first name was Jean.

George and Jean had a son and a daughter. Their family was living in California in the mid-1960's when Aunt Flo died. I've lost contact.

My mother, Anna Alma Wiebe Amies, died Nov 15, 2005 at the age of 99-1/2. I would like to make contact with the Kappels as part of my fledgling genealogical research. Any help would be appreciated.
