Anna Kappen - St Louis, Missouri - 1920

Anyone with research notes about Anna Kappen who lived at 2533 Farrar Street in North St. Louis please contact me. I am a descendant of Mary Kappen who came to St. Louis from Germany after her passage was paid by an older relative. This relative was said to be an older woman with a farm in the vicinity of Farrar Street. Mary's sister and her mother Cecelia also were brought over and worked for this relative. In the late 1930s my grandmother, the daughter of Mary KAPPEN Linnemann, and her family were given the house where Anna Kappen lived in 1920, also by an unnamed older relative who they took care of. I am curious as to the relationships and hope someone might have information.

As you say that the KAPPEN families in India are Catholics it is most likely that they arrived in India during the 16th and 17th centuries as during that period in Holland (The Netherlands) Protestant Reformation was taking place (especially in Northern & Western areas of the Country). Of course there were still Catholics in Holland after then (as there is today), but many did leave for other places whilst others decided to convert to Protestants.

The BDM records are reasonable good for this period of time in Holland but you would need to follow your line back in time in India before you could start researching in Holland.

Good luck with it.

Ian B.

There are almost 250 kappen families in the southern state of Kerala, in India. There is something unique about this because "kappen" is not a typical family name in India. All these kappen families are Catholics too. I do not think it is a random occurrence because Christians are just 2% of the Indian population.
Since India is very ancient culture with family as the fundamental unit of the society, the surname which is usually the family name, is used only by the family members. A kappen family member just cannot take another family name for fun. This family has documented history dating back to around 200 years. I believe that this family has some connection to Dutch settlement and trade with Kerala in India.
Dutch was in Kerala much before British came to India. Is it not possible that some Dutch families may have settled in India to keep the trade and learn the language and kept their identity intact?
I am kappen from India and very interested to establish my ancestry. Any suggestions how to go about it? I believe it would be wonderful if we can trace its route and establish its connection all over the world.
Hello, I saw your postinfg on the internet. In 1994 I wrote a book about the Kappen family. There are two Dutch Kappen family's, as far as I know not related. One originates from the south of the Netherlands and is Catholic, and is dexcribed in my book. The other part is from the northern province of Groningen and is protestant. I am very curious where your ancestors came from. Kindly,
Peet Kappen
Nuland Netherlands EU
