My great grandfather came over from Lithuania, his name was Frank Kapust and my great grandmother was Pauline Kuncius and remarried so she passed away as Rachauskas. My grandfather was Albert and he had 2 siblings, Edmund and Lydia. Most of Albert's kids and grandkids are in the DC metro, Northern VA area but I know some of my dad's cousins are still in MA.

If you think you may be linked to me please message!
Information on Paul Kapusta of Ohio (deceased)

I recently learned that my dad has a different biological father than I thought, and I am searching for more information on him.

My dad never knew his father and the only information my Grandma has is that his name was Paul Kapusta and he was a long-distance truck driver. They met and dated in Ohio and Pennsylvania in 1947 and had plans to marry when my Grandmother learned that Paul was married to another woman (name unknown).

Shortly after breaking up she discovered she was pregnant with my father, born Jan 2 1948, and he eventually took the last name of the man who raised him.

Paul would have been living in Ohio in the 40's, and would have been born around 1915 +/-. My dad's first name is Daniel and his middle name is Francis so I found it interesting that there is a "Paul Dan Kapusta" and a "Francis Kapusta (Katusta)" on Ancestry, both of which fall in the appropriate age range.

Any information you may have on Paul, his wife, or children, would be much appreciated.

Thank you :)

Looking for more information on my great-grandfather, (Asher) Ansel Levine, who arrived in Montreal, Canada in 1904/5 from Ukraine/Russia (perhaps Kiev area). There's an unconfirmed story in the family that the original surname was Kapusta or something like that and that Ansel changed it somewhere between leaving Ukraine and arriving in Canada.

The only other information I have on Ansel's family prior to arriving in Canada is that he had a brother and that their father's name was Jacob.

Any other information or leads would be appreciated.

Thanks.
Justin: I am researching for information on Avraam (Abraham) Kapustinsky. I have a genealogical record by Alvin Kapusta that ties Abraham as a nephew of my grandfather, Youkim Kapustensky. This Abraham in the documentation was a a son to Prokhor and Prokhor a brother to my grandfather Youkim. The documentation was written by a Kiril, who stated that his brothers were Avraam, Pavlo, Ivan and Matrifan. Avraam was the only one who came to America and eventually settled in Canada.

The word means cabbage and is common for cabbage farmer or cabbage vendor. However (unfortunately) it was sometimes used for a dork (cabbage head).

Although it occurs in Poland and Russia, mostly it comes from the Ukraine and the area of Poland near to the Ukraine.

Mark Kapusta
mkapusta@hotmail.com

bielfinder

Yes, the word kapusta means cabbage in Slovak.
Up to 1918 it was A-H http://users.erols.com/mwhite28/austhung.htm After the fall of A-H empire several new countries were formed and one was Czechoslovakia www.cgsi.org which in 1993 separated into Czech Republic and Slovak Republic.
Have you locate a precise place of birth for KAPUSTA and DUDRA ancestor? What was language of your ancestors? If they put down on an US census Slovak/Slovakland than the research is in present Slovak Republic.
An ALL site for research in Slovakia:
www.iabsi.com/gen/public
DUDRA, MALOVEC and KAPUSTA in SK's phone book: www.zoznamst.s
Few other sites for research:
www.cisarik.com
www.tccweb.org
www.iarelative.com
www.pavlovics.com
Found this DUDRA, Jakob Vasgyar, Hungary 17 1895 1912 arriving to America thru Ellis Island. www.ellisislandrecords.org

Hello! I've read before that the name Kapusta means cabbage. I kid my wife about the all the time. My Wife's Great Grandmother was Margaret Kapusta and we think she was born in 1897 in Czechoslovokia. Margaret married Jacob Dudra, whom we know was from Czech.
It's possible that at some point they may have lived in Austria, as their son, Jacob Dudra Jr., was born June 7, 1895 in Austria, but eventually wound up here in Pittsburgh, Pa.

What's funny is that, before I knew the meaning of the name Kapusta....my wife used to tell me that her younger brother, as a little boy, was always called "cabbage head".

What a coincidence.

You probably saw the Paul Kapusta on the Social Security death index? Born April 1915, died April 1971. It would be a good idea to send for his SS application, as well as his death certificate. In the 1920 census in Westmoreland county PA, there is a Paul Kapusta, age 5, living with his family, parents Michael Kapusta 41, Julia 38, both say from Austria (Hungary in the 1910 census), siblings Rudolph 17 (died Nov 1980 in Mahoning county OH), Julia 13, Michael 11, Margaret 9, John 7, Helen 2, and Joseph 10months. There's no way to tell for sure if this is the Paul you seek, unless you do some digging to make a connection, but this seems like a good candidate.

I am not related.

I am just starting on the Kapusta side of my family. My grandmother's name was Tacyjuana Kapusta on her marriage license. Antonia Kapusta on the Baltimore passenger list. Antannia Koapusta on my Mother's birth record. I know she came from the Galicia area with her brother Jan. She often talked about a sister Annie who died at a very young age of a cold or something of that nature. She very seldom talked about Europe, but every once in awhile would drop a few things. Can anyone help?
Thanks.
Sylvia Putnam

I know this may seem a bit unusual.
But many years ago I dated a girl from the Pittsburgh area and her last name was Kapusta. One thing lead to another and we had a daughter and receintly after 38 years, we have reunited. Sometime in the future my grandchildren will ask what the origin of the name Kapusta was. Well I certinally cant ask my Ex.
Any help would be appreciated by the grand children.

I just now found your e-mail response to my inquiry of 2002 for the name Kapusta/Kapuscinski. My granfather, Adam Kapuscinski, came to the U.S. through Ellis Island in 1906 as far as I can determine and my relatives told me that he changed his name from Kapusta to Kapuscinski, but when I don't know. It was before he came here to the U.S. for sure. His father was Martin ? Kapusta or maybe he changed his name to Martin Kapuscinski. I never knew if my grandfather had any brothers or sisters. He was a carpenter by trade and very good one and built some kind of monument in Poland. He served in the Russian army..........as Poland was once part of Russia and after the war, the borders were changed. He came to the U.S. when he was 21 or 23 yrs. old. Ellis Island records show his age as 23, but according to the year he came here and his birth date of 1885, he would have 21 yrs. old. He came here to the U.S. because my grandmother, Josepha Widomska, sent for him. She came here first at the age of 16 or 17 to Chicago and worked for a doctor's family doing housekeeping and cooking. She sent for grandpa and when he got to Chicago, he wouldn't marry her! So, the police put him in jail! While in jail, his cellmate told him to marry my grandma and get out and so he did. It was not a good marriage and they divorced, but had 3 children.

Well, maybe we are related. I am going to contact my cousin in Detroit to get more information on grandpa as my Aunt shared much with her about her family.

Thanks.

Nostrovia! Happy New Year.

Katherine Kapusinski

P.S. My father dropped the "C" in our name to shorten it so that is why I spell it without the "C".

Well, this is what I've figured out thus far. My grandfather came over from ? Krukowo. His name was spelled Adam Kapuscinski on the Ellis Island records search, but the birthdates don't match. If he came over in 1906 and was born in 1885 that would have made him 21 years old and the Ellis records say age 23 yrs. Anyway, I find it ironic that another Adam Kapuscinski came over in 1910! My father and sisters said that grampa changed his name from Kapusta to Kapuscinski, and so it had to have been prior to coming to the U.S. as there aren't any Ellis Island records for an Adam Kapusta immigrating here. I received an e-mail response that was from Poland stating that their ancestors changed their name from Kapusta to Kapuscinski in 1754-57. Also was informed that the suffix "ski" was reserved for the nobility. For that reason, rather than shorten names at Ellis Island, like many did to sound more American, many Polish added the ski.........to enoble themselves!

Do you know what part of Poland your ancestors were from and if there was a Martin Kapusta? That would have been the name of my great-great-granfather.

Thanks.

K.K.K.

I appreciate all the research you've done and shared on the name "Kapusta" from the Debno records. Would you be able to find a "Martin" Kapusta or Kapuscinski listed in the Debno records with a birth of a son named "Adam" and possibly other siblings?

Thanks so much. There is some monument that my grandfather built in Poland and would have either the name of "Kapusta" or Kapuscinski". You know if I check the Ellis Island records again, I will see what name he used..............duh.........to know whether the name was changed prior to his coming to the U.S.

I just now read your response to an old message on the name "Kapusta" and was amazed to find that your relative "Anne Kapusta" was in the same town as my father "Paw Paw". What year did she move to Indiana? My father was born in 1922 and his father "Adam Kapuscinski" changed the name from "Kapusta" so who knows, maybe we may be related. I don't know enough about his side of the family and wish that I did. I do have a relative that I can check with about this though.

The brothers went back to the Ukraine, and then returned, nobody knows what happened from there. She married Antonio Batenchuck (betenczuk) and they had 15 children in Winnipeg, Manitonba, Canada.

My grandfather Peter (Piotr) came to America on May 26, 1906 aboard a ship called Caledonia departing from Glasgo, Scotland. According to the ships registry he was from Wilna (Wilno?), but other papers list him as born in Gerianiony, Poland on May 28, 1882. He is listed as Russian - Polish. If any of this is helpful to you I have information on his wife and children and will be happy to share it. If it doesn't help you, perhaps you can help me with Polish Geography. I can't find Gerianiony on any map, and think Wilna is a region, not a city, although I found reference to Vilnius which I think is in Northern Poland and may be another name for Wilno. Any help is appreciated.

I don't know much because our family is detached, but because of my former occupation, I have a little interesting informaiton.

In general, in Poland, the "ski" suffix was reserved for the nobility. For that reason, rather than shorten names at Ellis Island, like many did to sound more American, many Polish added the ski... (to ennoble themselves?).

So if you grew a ski at Ellis Island, that may be the reason.

Mark

PS: MY!!! How I long to meet relatives and/or learn about our history!
