Robin: Thanks much for the information. It is possible the name was spelled differently when Crago Corretsca arrived in the USA. I have also found his name spelled Grago Korretska. He arrived in New York about 1818 had participated in the Napoleonic war. Supposed to be Russian or Polish.
Could be Uk. One bit of info. says his son Alexander was born Canada?New York. Gives me another name to look at.
Thanks much
Carole J.

The spelling on one of my family headstones is actually Koroczka (transliterated), although the 'o's are pronounced and indeed written now as 'a's. Never seen the name beginning with a C, but indeed the pronounciation is the same. Let me know if this connection is of any use. robin@southdown-radio.co.uk

Your grandmother is very likely related to my husband's mother and her relatives. Some did go to the Americas, there was a cousin of my mother in law's who died last year he had changed his name to Karach. Other relations include Wowks and Yamniuks.
Wasyl - good luck to you - I went down this road some 12 years ago - it changed my life! Yes, I would definately say your folks (you!) are Ukrainian. Do keep me posted as to any finds in church revcords. I've had no successes in this department as village life was (is) quite primative out there and many records were destroyed through various occupations, especially as our village was on the frontline at one time. This also caused loss of many family photos unfortunately. You will enjoy your trip, I'm sure.Unlike in the west, families have not moved so much so you may find , as I did, families in exactly the same location as they were 100 years ago.
May God go with you.

Robin

Dear Robin:
Thank you for the favor of a reply. My grandparents were born in Wankowa, which is just inside the present border of Poland. I do not know how to characterize their Nationality, however. My grandfather's passport was that of Austria-Hungary, because it was 1907. He used to say that his family came from "Slavic stock". He read "Narochki Newini". And he was Greek Catholic. I always understood him to be Ukrainian. Whether to call him a Lemko, Polish, or Austro-Hungarian is as far as I can tell, a matter of the perspective of the observer.

My grandmother was also born in Wankowa. She referred to her nationality as "Ruthenian".

But I have always considered them both Ukrainian, and I expect to find that both of their families emigrated to Wankowa from around Kiev somewhere. How many generations back I don't know, but hope to find out when I travel there in August. I have someone right now in Poland researching the state and church archives, and am hopeful to find pieces of the puzzle to put together.

Thank you for your interest. I would be happy to have your input on this or any other matter.

Cheers,
Wasyl
WANKOVA I do not know. Please forgive me if you already know this but Poland's borders were once very large - The Polish/Lithuanian empire streached right over to Kiev in 17th Century but then receeded to a very small 'Kingdom' around Warshava. Ukraine lost its independance way back then and only briefly gained independance for a few years around 1920. Prior to WWII Poland streached to Ternopil (Ternopole) but after Germany invaded and then Red Army pushed them out, Polands Western border was fixed about 50 miles West of Lviv (Lvov). For many years I believed my Mum was Polish until at end of Cold War I did some investigation and found out I was actually Ukrainian. Western Ukraines history is inseperable from Polish history and is quite a unique region. If this town/village Wankova is in Western Ukraine, I suggest you read Orest Subtelny's History of Ukraine (avail in any good library) and it will elude to many many factors to do with the original emigration of your Wowk.

By the way - where are you? GB? or States/Canada - I have some other reference points which may help.

Regards

Robin

Younger members of Wowk family in Canada are not so informed about the past, having been born and bred Canadians, so dont think they could help.
Re: great grandfather, Ole Christopherson in Paswegin

Hi, I just recently noticed your postaged message and have some information for you. I no longer live in the area, but I was born and raised there and my family still farms near Paswegin.

According to the local person who keeps the Paswegin cementary records, Ole Christopherson was buried in Paswegin by the Jenkins Funeral Home from Wadena on Aug 24 or 28, 1941. The Wadena News has been around since 1908 and may have copies of their old papers from that era. Their email address is wadena.news@sasktel.net. As well, I would think the Saskatchewan Dept of Vital Statistics would have a death certificate on file.

Also, there is mention of him and his daughter's family in the Paswegin History Book written by Thelma McCuish in 1982. It says the his daughter Olive married John Henry Sylvester in 1905 at Finley, North Dakota moving to Canada in 1925 with six children; Omer, Clarence, Judith, Victor, Vernon, and Gordon. One more child Thelma, was born after they arrived in Canada. Ole lived with them until he died in 1941. Clarence joined the army and Victor, Vernon and Gordon joined the air force. Victor went missing in action in 1943 and Clarence was killed in action in 1944. In 1943 the family moved to Moose Jaw where John died in 1947, Olive moved to BC in 1976. Gordon died in California in 1977. Omer died in 1979 at Maple Ridge, BC. Veron and his wife Doris live in Langley BC. Judith Erickson lives in Surrey BC. Thelma McCuish and husband Neil live in Clearwater BC. The history book also has some pictures of the family and military pictures of the four boys. There are no pictures of Ole. If you are interested in getting a copy of the book let me know. It is almost 400 pages long is presently selling for $10 plus shipping.

Hope this information is useful.

Wayne Rorquist

great grandfather, Ole Christopherson in Paswegin

I am looking for information on Ole Christopherson who moved to Paswegin, Sask. sometime after 1914 following the death of his wife. According to some family notes he died in 1941 and was buried in Paswegin. He immigrated to the U.S. from Norway in 1883 and settled in North Dakota where he lived until the death of his wife Juline. I am not sure when he moved to Paswegin. He was Lutheran and may have been a member of a local Lutheran church. Any information about how to locate a death certificate, an obituary in a local newspaper or anyone who may have known him would be appreciated.

Richard Krokum

Hi Carol...

I am descended from the Allen Family in New York. Charles Albert Allen was my Great Grandfather. His mother was Almina Rebecca Carretsca, whom I believe was descended from Alexander and "Crago"... Are we related?

Yes! Your husband and my Father are first cousins! Leonard Theodore (Johnson) was my Grandfather, though I never met him. To see a picture of LTJ, check out www.johnsonscale.com, our family business website. My Dad passed away in 1987, but his sister, Virginia Merriam (my aunt) is still alive (83 years old) and living in Saginaw, Mich. She has alot of family history information. We don't know much about the Allen side before Charles Albert. Heard his father's name was Enos Allen, but we have no facts on him. You can email me direct at Ross54@aol.com.

"cousin" Ross
