"Mrs. Joe Karls, 71, one of the early pioneer women of the Blackduck country, passed away at her home in the village on Monday, Feb 14. She suffered a stroke four months ago from which she never fully recovered.
Maude Marshall Karls was born at Fargo, North Dakota on October 19, 1883, the daughter of Charles and Ingrid Marshall. She was united in marriage to Joseph Karls on October 2, 1901 at Sisseton, South Dakota, and came to the Blackduck country with her husbad and family in 1904. She has been a continous resident here since that time. Before moving into the Vilage they made their home in Birch township southeast of Blackduck.
She is survived by her husband, two sons and four daughters. They are Lynd Karls of Brainerd, Mrs. Joe (Inez) Lucken, Blackduck, Mrs Clarence (Dorothy) Parmenter, Cass Lake, Mrs. Charles (Mayzie) Franslen, Kansas City, Mo., Mrs. Gerald (Mary Lou) Patterson, Minneapolis, and Norbert, at home. She is also survied by two brothers, Eugene, costello, Brookings, Ore., and Tom Costellow, Blackduck, four sisters, Mrs. Dennis Thireault and Mrs. Emil Skerik, Hines, Mrs Owen Carter, Brookings, Ore., and Mrs Arthur Olson, Hillsboro, Oregon, nineteen grandchildren and three great grandchildren. One son, Melvin, preceeded her in death.
Funeral services will be held Thursday afternoon, February 17, from the Presbyterian church in Blackduck, the Rev. James B. Prichard, pastor of the church, officiating and the interment will be made in Lakeview cemetery. The Kolden Funeral Home is in charge".
