There does not appear to be a common ancestor in recorded history. I have a quite a bit of information from Wolfau village records that may have come from the Burgenland Bunch Newsletter. If you have not visited its site, you may want to do that as it is a wonderful resource. Here is some information you may find interesting.

Ab and Lavern Karner (OK relatives) twice visited Wolfau, Austria and the area where Michael Karner our immigrant Karner, came from. They visited excavations at Petronell and Deutsch Altenburg begun in 1852. Pettronell covers the Palace Ruins Roman complex constructed in the 4th Century AD and is located 32 miles east and a little south of Vienna. One of its buildings is called “Rundbau” (round building) and contains the KARNER. According to history the Karner was a building (or room) used as a repository for human bones.

Franklin Karner (another Michael Karner Oklahoma relative) stated “Everything I have read and researched indicated several possibilities for name origin. I have read the name Karner is from Kartner, a province in Southern Austria. Some think it means “builder of carts”.

Margaret Flasch (my mother in law and granddaughter of Michael Karner) had a photograph of who she remembered as being identified as Michael Karner’s brother, Johann and his two children (see photo below). Margaret said Johann was the oldest Karner child and that he was a bookbinder by trade.

Helen Holmes (another granddaughter of Michael Karner's) remembered that her mother (Theresia Freudenberger nee Karner) told her that Michael Karner’s father, Johann, had been a bookbinder in Frankfurt, but had been chased out of that town during the revolution of 1848. Helen added, “Bookbinders, while perhaps not on the cutting edge of the intelligentsia, were of course in contact constantly with men of letters. In those days, remember, binding of books was not a common thing; usually done for those seriously interested in collecting a library. Leather bindings and all that. Craftsmanship, etc involved. Plus exposure to ideas. Anyway, once chased out, he went back to the home village, (presumablely Wolfau) merging with the bone handler – farmer clan. At least, that is how I recall Mother’s story.”

He has come and visited us a few times. He is no longer living. He lived in Switzerland and was an Architech. Johann Karner my Grandfather was to die at a very young age. around 35 years old. I don't know how to get those records. I was told he wrote childrens books, and had 3 children boys of his own.
Annie Strack; I think your Grandfather and my Great Grandfather might be one in the same person. I do not know much about my Great Grandpa other than on some census his last name is Karner and others it is Karrer. If it is the same person Karrer is the carried name. Great Grandpa George Vern Karrer was born in 1892 I am not sure where, he married Jesse Henthorne on 4/18/1912 in either Wheatland, Montana or Sylvan Richland CO, WI. They had my Grandpa also named George on August 9, 1919. Great Grandpa George died in an accident in the 1920's of what nature I am unsure of, so perhaps it is the same person. My Great Grandma remarried travelled through Montana and settled in Washington State. Let me know what you think.

Hi David,
Could our grandfathers be related? My grandfather was George Karner, born Nov 18, 1886 in Austria. He immigrated to Milwaukee in 1911. He died in a train accident in 1928 so I have very little information about him. he was a farmer in Milwaukee and was drafted in 1917, and married around 1918 or 1919. His ww1 draft registration card shows that he previously served 8 years in the Austrian infantry. I can't make out the place of birth that is written on the card, but the town's name ends in "--dorf". On the transciption from the immigrant ship record, the place of orgin is written as Renduerbrg.
Any chance that this could be your grandfather's brother?

Thanks for your help!

I have been looking online at www. arcanum.hu/mol in the
census of 1715 and have found a number of towns where
there were Csonka. At first it was strange manoeuvering,
but using the arrows, and then the index button at the top
left of the data screen, you can see the counties, then the
jaras, and then the villages for each area. There are so many
places with Csonka I am trying to figure out where the 'first
ones' came from. Again, thanks for the web site and the
heads up about the research room.
Hi Fred
An archivist at the National Archives of Hungary has been assisting me and there has been a fee for this that covered the researcher's time, translation of records and postage. Mostly he has found records which aren't available through LDS, but there have been a few I could probably have found myself. I haven't been researching long and am only now getting the hang of accessing the microfilmed records! However, my understanding from looking at their website is that you can go into the archives an do your own research - and it's free. The link to their website is http://www.mol.gov.hu. I don't think that you can search for family records online. Also, there's currently a message on their website that the research room in the main building will be closed from August until December so it may be worth checking this out.
I hope this helps a little. Maybe you'll find out something about my CSONKA whilst you're researching your own! Were they from around the same area?
Best wishes
Maria

KARNER - Bánk/Bakonybánk, Hungary

I have some additional information about my KARNERs since my previous post. My great grandmother was Veronika KARNER, born in Bakonybánk in 1872. She was married to György MIKOLICS.
Veronika's parents were Márton Ferenc KÁRNER b. 1837 Bakonybánk and Mária NAGY b. 1841.
Márton KÁRNER's parents were Márton KÁRNER and Ágnes CSONKA. According to information from National Archives of Hungary, Márton and Ágnes had 11 children (I have the names). All but the eldest child were born in Bánk/Bakonybánk. I had received information previously that one of the children Ignatius (Ignác), b. 1831 Bánk and d. Csatka 1906, was married to Anna SARUS.
I am interesting in hearing from anyone with information or connection to this line of my ancestry.
In one of the records of the marriage of Margaretta Batzler and Joseph Rosskopf on Jun 11, 1860 it lists her parents as George and Joanne (Flasch) Batzler. Also the witnesses are listed as Joanne Flasch and Balthasare Flasch. Do you have this Joanne that married George in your records? I would appreciate any info that you have on them.

Thanks.
Cathy

The Donald J. Flasch you are asking about was my dad's (Alvin "Jim" Flasch) uncle. Donald was born 01-19-1930 in Mn, likely either McLeod or Mille Lacs County. He was the son of Michael & Catherine Flasch.

Donald died in Faribault, MN while he was an "inmate" at the Faribault State School for the Deaf & Dumb. He was mute and would "act out" in frustration to his communication difficulties. My dad doesn't know if he was mute from birth or if, perhaps, it was a result of ungodly abuse he received from his mother, Catherine.

Donald lived with the family until he was 17; at which time he was sent to Faribault. It's my understanding that treatment there was not exactly a huge improvement over his home-life.

FYI: Everything I find has a different spelling of Catherine's maiden name! Baumgartner, Baumegartner, Baumgartinger.

Please contact me if you care to share other information.

Hi Frank
I'm joining this discussion a few years since you started so hope you're still working on this!
My father's grandmother's name was Veronica Karner, married to Gyorgy Mikolics - both buried in Csatka, Hungary. At this stage of the search, no-one seems to know much about Veronica's family but I noticed that the Karner surname seems to pop up in Austria. It's a long shot but thought it'd put it out there.
Regards, Maria Mikolics
Western Australia
I was trying to find a source where the deeds are already typed and easy to read. I have done much research in Berkshire County and have the book you recommended. Thank you again for responding.

Hi. I think your Anna Karner was Anna Magdalena Karner, daughter of Jan Nicholas Koerner and wife Anna Magdalena who were German Palatine immigrants to the Hudson River Valley in New York State. Jan Nicholas was born 1659 in the Palatinate somewhere. You have also done the good deed of answering who was John Tullar since I recently found him listed in family deeds. The family left for the New World in the third ship to leave Holland. This would have been about 1710. There are a couple books who mention the family. I have that information but it's currently buried.

Given the time distance between the 1700s and 1800s, I'm not sure what the likelihood is that the two families were related. Only if European families stayed put far more than American, I'd say.

Debbie

Karner/Schimmelpfenig connection

Virginia: My husband and I were amazed to see that someone with the name of Schimmelpfenig was inquiring about the Karners. His grandparents, John and Risa Karner, came to America from Graz, Austria in approximately 1925 and settled in Chicago, Illinois, then later moved to Wheaton, Illinois. My mother's maiden name was Schimmelpfenig and her grandmother was born in Wheaton, Illinois in 1867. My husband and I currently live in Wheaton. Do you have any information that you can share on either of our families? Are you related to any Schimmelpfenigs from Wheaton?

Karner Family of Austria-Hungary

Mr. Tullar -

In response to your message of the Karner and Tullar family tree, I really am rather sketchy. I have not seen a Tullar in my family tree, but that doesn't mean anything.
The Karner family which settled in Oklahoma started with my grandmother, Theresia Karner who came from Austria-Hungary. Her parents were Michael Karner and Theresia Flasch both of Austria- Hungary region. Michael's parents were Johann Karner and Anna Schiller. This is about all I have, but I wouldn't be surprised if we were related somehow. Do you have any knowledge of where your Anna Karner might have come from? Another lady that I found on the net was also searching for Karner (which seems to be rare). You may want to contact her and see if there might be a relation. Her email address is:
ginny-wedgwood@worldnet.att.net.

She was searching for relatives that were in New Orleans and St. Louis by the name of Karner.

Keep posting if you get any leads!
