Yes, Frederick Karnes was my GGGGrandfather. He was
born 29 October 1806 and died in Denton, County on 29 August 1878. He's buried at the Flowermound Cumberland Church in Flowermound, Texas. In all the U.S. Census he claimed to be from Tennessee.

Re: Death of Mr. F. G. Karnes in Venezuela

Dave,

I would very much be interested in the information you mentioned. F. G. Karnes (or Felix Grundy Karnes) was my great grandfather. I am descended from him through Marlin Karnes (my grandfather) and Douglas Karnes (my dad). We have always heard the story that FG died of a flu epidemic in Venezuela working on oil rigs after the war. But supposedly he was a little on the rough side and some people wondered if he actually just disappeared and arranged to appear dead to his family to avoid repercussions. Having access to the report you mentioned would clear this issue up and potentially give FG a better name in the future.

Thanks!

Brett Karnes

These records were posted recently at the East Tennessee Historical Society. I saw your post on Ancestry from 2000. There are lots of photos of Karnes family members. There is a photo of a Fannie Karnes. They have extensive records (8 billion) on Knox County families and the Karnes family was a prominent family in the Fountain City Area. ETHS is part of the Knox County Library System and Knox County in the beginning encompassed a lot of East Tennessee.

http://cmdc.knoxlib.org/cdm4/browse.php?CISOROOT=/p265301col...
http://cmdc.knoxlib.org/cdm4/browse.php?CISOROOT=/p265301col...

While my information doesn't fit with the name of your GGG grandmother, the birthdate of your GGG grandfather made me decide to send this anyway. My GGgrandfather was Andrew Jackson Bickel, born November 8, 1833, in Pike Twnshp, Jay County, Indiana. He was married to Elizabeth Tharp. Andrew was the son of George Washington Bickel, born December 26, 1803, in Centre County, Pennsylvania. George was the son of Thomas Bickel, born July 29, 1773, in Pennsylvania. George was married to Nancy Glasford and Thomas was married to Barbara Shafer. If it appears that there may be some tie, please let me know.

Anna "Nancy" KARNES, 1810-1891 in Fairfield/Hocking Cos., Ohio

Anna "Nancy" KARNES was born in Virginia on April 24, 1810, but I know nothing about her parents or even if KARNES was her maiden name. She married Daniel KITTSMILLER, April 18, 1829 probably in Fairfield County, Ohio. They lived at Royalton, Ohio until the mid-1830s when they moved to Logan, Ohio. Anna "Nancy" died in Logan on September 3, 1891 and her obituary says that she was the oldest resident of Logan at the time of her death. Daniel and Anna had six children: Elizabeth (1830-1919); Catharine (1831-1913); Benjamin (1833-1913); George W. (1835-1864); Hester Ann (1838-1917); and Mary Ellen (1843-1908).

Daniel's father, Benjamin KITZMILLER, mentions his "grandson," Oliver KARNES, in his will in 1852. I can't find any subsequent record of Oliver.

Can anyone help me identify Anna "Nancy" KARNES?

Oliver KARNES, Ohio, Indiana, Michigan, 1860-1900

I need the names of the parents of Oliver KARNES (born 1832 in Ohio, and died after 1900 probably in Michigan)

Oliver Karnes is mentioned as a "grandson" in Benjamin Kittsmiller's will in Hocking County, Ohio, in 1856. At that time Oliver lived in Bluffton, Wells County, Indiana where he's shown in the 1860 census, aged 28, wife Mariah L. and children: Josephine and Mary, both born in Indiana. Oliver was a shoemaker. None of Benjamin Kittsmiller's daughters married a Karnes, but he had a daughter-in-law, Anna Carnes, who married his son, Daniel, in 1829. It's not known if or how Oliver might be related to Anna.

In the 1880 census Oliver was in Keystone, Wells County, Indiana, and was still a shoemaker. There were new children in the family: Jennie, Lillie, Nellie, Carlisle, and Hallie, and a grandson, Freddie Dor.

By 1900, Oliver and Mariah had moved to Adrian, Lenawee County, Michigan, where Oliver worked for a railroad. There were no children in the family any longer and Mariah said that she had had 7 children, of whom 6 were still living.

Oliver and R.E. KARNES, Indiana, 1850s-1900

Daniel KITZMILLER (1805-1863) was the son of Benjamin KITZMILLER (1776 in Dauphin County, Pennsylvania-1856 in Logan, Hocking County, Ohio) and his wife, Elizabeth, whose surname I don't know yet. Can anyone identify her? Benjamin was the son of Adam KITZMILLER and another Elizabeth whose maiden name is also unknown.

According to their family Bible, Daniel married Anna "Nancy" CARNES (1810 in "Old" Virginia-1891) in 1829 when he was living in Bloom Township, Fairfield County, Ohio. They moved to Logan, Hocking County, Ohio during the 1830s and Anna died there in 1891. According to her very short obituary, she was the oldest resident of Logan at the time of her death. They are both buried in the Old Cemetery in Logan under the name KITTSMILLER.

My search for Anna has been at a standstill for more than thirty years. Who was she and who were her parents?

Benjamin KITZMILLER mentions a "grandson", Oliver KARNES, in his will in 1852, probated in 1856 (Oliver was then living in Bluffton, Indiana and was a shoemaker), and Benjamin's son, John, who lived in Blackford County, Indiana had an R.E. KARNES, aged 22, in his household in 1870. The spelling of the last name was consistently written with a "K", never a "C" and never as KERNS.

Who were these KARNES boys? Were they illegitimate children of Anna CARNES (this is how her surname was spelled in the Bible), her children by a previous marriage, her brothers, or no relation at all which is suggested by the difference in spelling?

Can anyhone help?

Richard Welch
Green Valley, Arizona
