Pfc. Howard LeRoy Karns, 24, son of Mr. & Mrs. Henry Karns of Anita, IA was reported killed in action at Leyte in the Phillippines 11/25/1944. He was born in Anita 6/16/1920. He attended Anita public school & high school & spent his entire life in Anita until induction into service 11/19/1942. He was sent to Camp Roberts, CA & went overseas 4/1943 without ever having a furlough. Last spring he was awarded he Purple Heart which was sent home to his mother at that time. Besides his parents he leaves 6 sisters & 5 brothers: Mrs. Richard Watson of Anita; Mrs. Maurice Shannon of Anita; Mrs. Donald Hall of Omaha; Mrs. Herman Madran of Dexter; Mrs. Edgar Vernon of Monticello; Mrs. Clara McFaren of Des Moines; Pvt. Garland Karns in France; Max Karnes discharged veteran of WW II & now at Newton; Anson Karns of Davenport; George of Atlantic; Paul at home. Pfc. Karns was the 1st of Mr. & Mrs. Karns' 12 children to die.
