Re: Samuel Karr 1779 Orange Co., NY

Hello, this is Kathleen E.(nee Kaar)Isleib.I am a descendant of Joseph Kaar/Elizabeth Dufford of Washington Twp., (German Valley/Drakestown Morris County) (Long Valley) NY. I have found that Joseph Kaar married 1st Mary Moore of Somerset County, NJ. He may have been a descendant of Joseph Kaars, Estonia. Who arrived in Philadephia, PA in 1725. Interestingly enough there was a Maria Karr with 2 male children who arrived in Philadelphia about the same time. Her children were mariners that travelled from Phila to NY and back. Here is the rub, she seems to have married Samuel Karr and had a son Joseph (1792-96). Samuel moved to NY after moving to Long Valley for a time. after that only Samuel moved to NY, Mary stayed behind or died.

During this time there was a family name Karr that lived in what is know Pt.Murray, Warren County, NJ and on one of the Census Joseph Kaar was added to his family farm.

Additionally, in 1796 there was a Census in PA that says Walter Kaar and Joseph Kaar were tennents on the Rittenhousse/Adams property on the Black River. There were Duffords, and many names that show up in German Valley Latter on, Such as Kisbaugh/Kishpaugh and several more.

in 1663 in NY on Southwald, theree are many names in like Schleighter (that changed to Sliker or maybe was Sliker) the Stillwells, and many more including a marriage of my GGGranddparents Wm & Martha (Sliker)Carr on the books. It should have been Kaar or Karr.

Isn't Genealogy Fun! By the way do either of you have a copy of the Kaar Kapers. It is sort of chronological and timeline guideline to those who are interested. It was started by the Cousins' Kaar/Hopler/Hoey/Griffith and others. If you would like I can send you a copy of the work.

He was married to Phebe Fenton and had two children, Margaret and James. I don't know if he remained in Ny or moved further west. Their son, James was married to a Sarah Cook and then a Sarah Thompson. He and his wife lived in Yates Co. NY and she died in Hancock Co., Illinosi. Any information would be greatly appreciated. He had two wifes , Lorraine Vokal and Thelma (Van ?) Conant. I seek info on his marriage and children. I have found little thus far. His younger brother ,Russell B.

This may be just a strange coincidence, but a large Kaar/Karr family resided in and around Pleasant Valley/German Valley, NJ, which is adjacent to Orange Co, NY, in the late 1700's to the mid 1800's. Many of them moved to central Illinois in about 1855, including many of the children of Joseph Kaar (b. 1780, Warren Co, NJ; d. 1833, Butler, Pennsylvania) and Elizabeth Dufford (b. 24 Jul 1793, Pleasant Valley, NJ; d. about 1855).

Some sources say that Joseph Kaar/Karr's father was a John Kaar, but I have not been successful in substantiating that. I do have more information about this family, if you are interested.

His parents were John and Sophia (Jennings) Karr.

The marriage date is stated as Mar 4th, 1847 in White County ILL.
My great-great grandfather was Joseph Karr. He was born around September 1852 in either Kansas, Missouri, or Mississippi. He died in either December 1928 or 1929. He is buried in either Ryan Jefferson County, OK or Waurika, OK. I have been trying to find out when Joseph Karr died. I have looked and looked and I do not know what else I can do in order to find his date of death.

Joseph Karr married Susan Deal on June 17, 1883 in Fannin County, Texas. They had four children George Washington Karr (born February 26, 1884), John Franklin Henry Karr (born May 10, 1891 in Winthrop, AR), Mattie Karr, and Alice Karr. Alice Karr died around 1903 in Caddo, OK. Susan Deal died in 1893 and is buried in Winthrop, AR.
I've looked longingly before at this Benjamin Karr in the 1860 Census. If the link were correct, it might get me past the brick wall on this line. However, the problem I have with it is that I have pretty good documentation going back to my Benjamin Karr and Fannie. My great-grandmother Maggie Carr was born September 15, 1846 to Benj. and Fannie. On the list of children in the Simpson Benjamin's house, the only child at all close in age (and she is four years off) is Mary E. Karr. Granted, names do transmute, and perhaps Mary E. became Maggie at some point. If it didn't then where is Maggie? Perhaps she had left the household, but I don't find her elsewhere.
I'm not ruling it out completely, but so far it's a maybe. I'll let you know if I make any progress.

Hi Greg,

Can you provide a time frame for when the three Karr brothers might have come to America? My illusive 3Xgrandfather (1776-1844) was in Pennsylvania before moving to Ohio. Family history indicates he was born in Ireland or possibly New Hampshire, but 1880 census records for his surviving children indicate he was born in Pennsylvania. After getting into the family genealogy, I've always thought about the possibility that his father was the one from Ireland or New Hampshire. When I was a child my father told a story about our oldest known ancestor coming from Ireland with a brother, but they were separated on a river trip and never saw each other again.

My grandfather used to also tell the story that everyone with the spelling of Karr in the US was somehow related. After a lot of research, it appears to me that the Karr spelling comes from the Kerrs of Scotland that changed the spelling after moving to Ireland.

Sorry Claudia, we have the names of all of John and Nancy Welch Karr's children and none are Bonnie or Katherine.

Further information since I wrote the original post in 1999, is that our John Karr was born in the US (probably Pennsylvania) in 1776 or possibly as late as January 1777.
We believe his father's name was Robert, who was possibly in the Revolutionary War. Wife Nancy Welch apparently was born in Ireland, and then ended up in Washington County, Pennsylvania, where they were married in April 1800. They were living in Harrison County, Ohio before 1820.

Hi my name is Greg Karr. I am also researching the Karr family. I am not sure if this is meaningful or not, but my grandfather told me that 3 brothers came from Ireland to US. There was bad blood between the brothers and they scatterd. What I recall is that there was a Karr brother in Pennsylvania, Missouri and Indiana. And when I look at all this I sorta am seeing a bit of a trail. My grandfather told me this when I was very young... so I am not exactly sure about the actual details... other than I know there were 3 brothers. I was also told that the actual name in Ireland was Kerr. I was also told that everyone with the Karr name is related as it was a unique name and spelling. But again, I can be certain of this as I was young. I have an ancestor that came from County Derry in Ireland by the name of James Karr who moved to Indiana. Whether there really is a Missouri connection to James Karr i.e. 3 brothers I am not sure at this point as I just started research. And unfortunately almost all of my aunts, uncles and grandparents are dead now... including my dad. So all I have are memories and I have found some very interesting information on Ancestry that matches what my grandfather told me to the letter.

Thanks Betty, I guess it's a different John Karr then. My great-grandfather came from Indiana, and lived in New York. But, he might have been from somewhere in Europe before living in Indiana. It's interesting to know that your John Karr was from Ireland, do you know which part? I have seen the Carr spelling being from there but not the Karr spelling. My family have never been quite sure whether Karr was Irish, Scottish or even German.

Anyway, thanks for repying.

Claudia
