Re: Kates of NJ

Hi, Andrea!
My mom is Janet Kates McCrum. Her parents were Paul D. Kates and Erma Jeanette Wilkins of Woodbury NJ (and later Charleston WV and Swainton NJ). Paul's parents were John Kates and Myrtle Anna Rugh. Paul was born in Philly but raised in Woodbury and Cape May (Swainton) he had at LEAST one sister, Annette Maria (Nettie). My mom knew Aunt Nettie, and my grandfather died in '92, but John was absent from their lives from the time my grandfather was very young. Myrtle died in 1939 so my mother never knew her. They're all buried in a cemetary about two miles down from the turn off route9 to Avalon NJ (sorry can't remember cemetary name). But our old home is the white house across from the Wawa on Rt.9 in Swainton next to the road leading to Avalon. Myrtle took in boarders in the early 1900s. Evidently we also owned "Kates' Corner" further north on Route 9.
Don't know if you can connect any of this, but I thought I'd offer it. I am looking for ANY info you might have about my line as well. Thanks!
WHitney

Re: William Henry Kates

Hi there! I am searching for my mother's family (Kates in NJ). The info I have is...My grandfather, Paul Derring Kates was born to John Kates and Myrtle Anna Rugh. He was born in Philadelphia but they moved to Cape May County, NJ. They also had a daughter, Annetta Maria Kates who was somewhere between 15 and 20 years old when Paul D was born. So the rumor is that Paul D is Annetta's son, but raised by Myrtle (who was about 40 at the time). Myrtle died in 1939, so my mother never knew her and never got the whole family history. John Kates ran off on Myrtle and was not in Paul D's life...so unfortunately no info there.
Don't know if this helps anyone but I thought I'd put it out there - you never know. If anyone can fill in any blanks for me, I'd be really greatful!
Whitney

I know that your posting is quite dated but FYI in case you are still checking. My grandfather is the Thomas Kates (b 11/11/08). His siblings were Pearl, Edith, and Earl. If you are still in need of info (I know Kathryn is still researching) my Aunt Betty (Elizabeth) may be of some help. Although I don't remember the family well, I remember plenty of visits to Pottsville when I was younger.
Natalie (Kates) Savage

Maybe it was someone in my family that you are working with because I am descended from Edith Mae Kates. I was looking at the wrong Thomas when I posted, so Thomas Sr. is my g-grandfather. Do you have the Kates line back very far? I've hit a number of brick walls. ANyway, maybe we can compare stuff. You can email directly at ktkadoo@myself.com

Katie

Hiram Kates - NC and VA

I'm looking for information on the Kates family of Caswell Co., North Carolina; Halifax and Pittsylvania Co., Virginia. I know that Hiram Thomas Kates Sr. married Martha Saunders [daughter of James and Elizabeth] on April 16, 1866 in Halifax Co., Virginia which is where Martha was born. Hiram was born in Caswell Co., North Carolina. The couple had a son Hiram Thomas Kates Jr. [July 2, 1874 - December 3, 1950] who was married to Lottie Lou Anderson [November 16, 1880 - August 4, 1941]. I believe that the couple had a daughter named Sallie Ellen Kates [September 10, 1878 - October 10, 1955] who married Charles Chopin Hall [February 28, 1868 - April 24, 1936].

Your help is appreciated.

Thanks.

They were listed as Abner (b. abt 1857) and Amy Cates (which I believe shoud be Kates as that is how they spelled it in later censuses).
