Hello Steve, Yes, I am a cousin to the Katke boys. And yes that was my Dad's house that you came swimming at with Todd. My Dad, Todd's Uncle John D. Katke. Dan is still in Michigan, email is dkatke@gpvllc.com.Dan is divorced with 1 daughter. Marv is in Ohio and retired from the Air Force few years ago, believe he is driving a truck now. Also 1 daughter. John is divorced, living in Ohio also has
2 daughters. My Uncle Dave, boys Dad passed away in 2002 and my Dad - John passed away in 2003. I just got a card with a wedding picture of Joyce Katke matter of fact. Feel free to contact Dan if you like. What brings you searching on Ancestry.com?

Todd and I keep in touch. Matter of fact, visited with him in Alaska just this year. I am very proud of the photographer he has finally become. He does very nice work.... Take Care

Cousin Ginny - in Texas!

Hi Virginia,

I grew up with Dan, Marvin, Todd, and John Katke. We lived in Plymouth, MI. They are the son's of Joyce and (Dave?). I know that Joyce and Dave were divorced. I met the Katke's in 1972 when we moved to Plymouth. I was 12 at the time. I still keep in touch (somewhat) with Todd. He is a successful wildlife photographer and lives in Alaska now. I have lost touch with Marv. We were friends for a very long time. I know that he retired from the Air Force, but I am not certain where he is or what he is doing now. Don't know what John or Dan are up to either. Todd sent me an email recently and told me that his mom (Joyce) was recently remarried and living in Florida. I think she is about 80 by now.

I think that I was actually to your house in Bloomfield Hills when I was 17-18 years old. Todd and I came over and went swimming in a pool. I think it was his Uncle John's house. That would have made it your Dad. You must be a cousin of Dan, Marv, Todd, and John.

I am not sure if there is anymore information about the Katke's that I can provide. I am sure you know a lot more than I do.

You can get in touch with Todd by email akdude462000@yahoo.com.
Do you know what John, Dan, and Marv are doing?

I'm so glad to hear about other Katke families.
Wilhelm Katke and his Brother Ed left Amilchin Ukraine Russia, ~ Nov 4, 1906 on SS RYNDAM in New York and Wilhelm settled in Crestin, Iowa for a
couple of years, ending up in Spokane, WA with the Northern Pacific railroad. HIs brother died in Portland, Oregon.
Wilhelm was born in Sompolnan, Poland, Oct. 3, 1872.
His father was Augusta Kathka or Katka, Grandfather Michachl Katka. Wilhelm left because he was drafted into
Army another term - He had already served a couple of times.
His mother was a Mildes. He married Bertha Ulm, whose
mother was Ottillie Binting. Beate Binting (?) was a
schulz who was born in Prussia. Do any of these people sound familiar to you?
Ginny, Hi. You seem to have a lot of info on the Katke thing, and I was wondering if you would be able to share some of that with me. I am related by marriage to the Katke's. My wife is one. I'll give you what little bit I have.

Peter George Katke b. 1871/72 Berlin WI d. 1940 Mecosta Co., MI md Martha Mathwig b. 6/16/1871 Berlin Germany d. 7/24/1967 Grand Rapids, MI. Peter is the son of John and has several siblings to include a Joseph, Julius and Matteus. Peter's family lived in the Seneca area of Wisconsin around the time of the 1880 census. Peter and Martha had:

Clara b 1894
William b. 1896 d. 1955
Maria b. 1898 d. 1898
Raymond George b. 8/27/1901 d. 9/13/1951
Rheinhart b. 1903 d. 1958
Margaret b. 1905
Peter Godfrey b. 4/4/1911 md Gladys Ethel Wilber b. 12/16/1916. They had four daughters. Gladys is still alive.

Raymond George md Selma Louise Anderson b. 1/26/1904. They had:

James b. 1927 d. 1927
Mary Louise b. 1928 d. 1938
Richard Peter b. 4/1930 md Janet Louise Bell 1/1930
Barbara b. 11/1938 (adopted) md David Waddell

Richard and Janet had:

Hal Richard b. 5/21/1950 d. 3/4/1988
Sue Ann b.11/1952
Mary Lou b. 3/1959 md Brian Gillum b. 2/1968

Hal had two daughters from first marriage Michelle and Angela. Michelle md Scott Kolp and they have two children. Angela md Kevin Endres.

Mary and I have one daughter MacKenzie Layne Katke Gillum b. 4/1998.

If you have any information that ties Peter George in with your family, or how he fits into the scheme of things I would be very appreciative of it. I would be willing to go around Mecosta Co., and look for stuff if you have an idea of where I need to go. I have plans to speak with Gladys Wilber sometime this summer, to see what she can help me with, but trying to pin her down, and then on a "good day" can be tough.

Thank you in advance.
This makes a lot of sense if everyone thinks about it. The Katke (Kotke/Kattke/Kattkey ad nauseum) line I am following up in claims Prussian heritage. Prussian's were known for being very involved in the military. Anyway, the 1880 US census shows a John KATTKEY in Wisconsin with his wife Wilhelmina and four (if I remember off the top of my head correctly) children. I think from what I can put together from this message board and from the spattering of conversations I have had with Gladys (Wilber) Katke, that regardless of spelling the Wisconsin, the Missouri and the Michigan Katke's are all related and that the fallout was either a) on how to spell the name (go figure) or b) a land dispute (which I have seen other postings on.

Since I have better access to records and such here in Mecosta Co (Rodney, Remus, Mecosta, Big Rapids, etc.) I would be willing to look for and forward anything anyone requests (though with all the difficulty everyone seems to be having, myself included I may be putting myself in for more than I bargain for). All I ask in return is that y'all help me out with trying to connect your Katke's with mine.

Hello Ginny and other fellow Katke decendents. It is interesting to me that you are making a connection to the Katke/Kotke names. My very good friend has the maiden name of Kotke and I am a Katke. She hails from Park Falls, WI and my family is of Merrill, WI. My Great-Grandfather Andrew/Andreas Katke came to the US with his wife Matilda Witt in or around 1907. They came from the Ukraine region where many German farmers had settled with the promise of not fighting in Russian wars. They lied or the czar changed and they fled to the US. Don't know if any of you writing are of this family. There were many children in the family including Matthew who also settled in the Merrill area. There was a sister Olga who I am told settled in Canada. There is speculation that the rest of the family went through many hardships in Russia and were ultimatley placed in Siberia. Don't know any of that for sure.
If anyone can help connect the Katke dots I would appreciate it.

Hi Ginny, I am researching the KATKE surname as it connects with my husband's great-grandmother's family, the ANIELAKs. Teodozja "Tillie" Anielak married Karol "Charles" Katke about 1900, probably in St. Louis. I know they had 5 children: Marianna, Frank, Martha, George and Raymond. Would like to know if you have any info on the St. Louis KATKEs -- I am willing to share what I have.
GINNY,
I DO NOT THINK THAT IS THE SAME DEBBIE. WE LIVE IN ST LOUIS. I AM VERY INTERESTED IN THE KATKE FIGHT OVER LAND BECAUSE I REMEMBER MY COUSIN, JEFF KATKE, SAYING SOMETHING ABOUT THAT WHEN I WAS VERY YOUNG, BUT I DO NOT SEE HIM ANYMORE, SO I CANNOT ASK HIM ABOUT. I AM PRETTY SURE THAT WAS WITH MY DAD, HIS MOM, AN HIS SIBLINGS. I THINK MAYBE I REMEMBER THE LAND BEING CALLED "TABLEROCK". IF YOU COULD LET ME KNOW WHO IT INVOLVED AND WHAT HAPPENED THAT WOULD BE GREAT. ALSO, I WILL FIND OUT MY FTHER'S PARENTS' NAMES SO MAYBE SOMEONE WILL RECOGNIZE THEM ON THE MESSAGE BOARD. THANKS.

Hi there Mary in St. Louis. I am Ginny in Texas and little Sister Laura is in O'Fallon, MO! Our Dad was John D. Katke and Grandfather was Marvin Leo Katke. We have traced our Katke/Kotke relatives back to Prussia around 1848! Somehow they came via ships to New Orleans bound for St. Louis. We are very likely related in some way! I (Ginny) am continuing some genealogy started by a great aunt (Leona Katke) back in 1967. I have found one distance cousin in Oklahoma via the internet. You are the second Katke that has come to light! Better go now, since your message was dated in March, not sure you check this very often. I obviously don't check it myself often enough, I sure will now. Have a great day -

March 20, 2000

Hi Laura,

I too share your maiden name (KATKE). I have never heard anyone in my family mention a Marvin Katke. Where do you live? What part of the country did he originate?

I live in St. Louis, Missouri. My whole family lives or lived in St. Louis also. The older deceased Katkes' lived in downtown
St. Louis and migrated to the North County areas.

Originally, I was told that our name was spelled Katka. When my grandpartents came to this country, the spelling was changed. My grandparents on my father's side spoke Polish, as well as some of my aunts. I never understood a word of our native language.

There are quite a few Katkes' in St. Louis, most are my direct cousins, or my father's cousins.

Write and let me know what state your from.

Another Katke!
Looking for Kotke relatives

I am searching for any relatives of a Leo Leroy Kotke, he was my half uncle. He was born August 11, 1948 somewhere around Marion, Mi (could possibly be Rodney or Remus, MI), and he died January 19, 1969 in Vietnam. He was a Private First Class in the Marine Corps. My grandmother (Anna Belle Hollenbeck-Kotke)married my grandfather (Norman George Maneke), when Leo was a year old. From what I understand Leo's father died in a house fire. I do not know his name or anything else about this side of the family. I am curious to know more about his father's side of the family. If there is anyone out there who knows anything, I would greatly appreciate it. Thanks for everything.
