Re: D. Mark Katz of Gettysburg re: John G. Ryan picture

I'm trying to contact D Mark Katz, author of Witness to an Era.

My Great Great Great Grandfather was James Watson Porter. He worked for both Brady and Gardner, at some point purchasing their studio.

Our family has two newspaper articles detailing the discovery, 80-100 years ago, of Lincoln and Grant plates in the effects of James Watson Porters estate. The effects were shipped to his son, Samuel Porter, of Bay Village OH. My grandmother can recall handling these plates as a child, even taking them to school! This would have been just prior to WW1. The plates were eventually dontated to the Western Reserve Historical Society here in Cleveland, sometime prior to WW2.

Althought we are contacted from time to time by private collectors, all that remains in the family is the articles.

I'm an avid Civil War reader, and have been to many Civil War shows, and decided a few years ago to try to obtain copies of the sittings taken by James Watson Porter. I found a dealer with lots of Lincoln CDVs, told him the above story, and he promptly showed me a CDV taken by J. W. Porter, and marked as such. It was far beyond my means to purchase it, so I thanked him and went on my way, figuring I'd soon come across someone who could direct me to a good reproduction.

The next year, I spoke again with who I thought was the same dealer, and he suggested your book, Witness to an Era, telling me that Porter had taken the three poses on the top of page 118, taken on Sunday Aug. 9th, 1863. These poses match the ones from the local Newspaper articles detailing the donation to the Western Reserve Historical Society.

I'm wondering how I can get a good reproduction, where, how etc.? I've spoken with someone at the National Archives who was less than helpful, and I've had no response from the Western Reserve Historical Society.

Any information would be greatly appreciated, and I would be more than willing to send you copies of the articles.

Thank you,
Bill Stone
bstone66@aol.com

Eva:

I realize this was posted some time ago , but I just ran across it. My maternal grandmother, Sarah Pendler, was from Dinivitz. She came from a large family (as most did). Some of her siblings were Kuka, Laka, Yenta, Ida, and Bennick. I believe her family was from a long line of rabbis.

From what I understand, Dinivitz was destroyed during the war. I did find a web site where you could locate where the cemetery was.

I hope this information is helpful.

Annie Skelton

Was able to get in touch with Patrick Sanders, son of Harry
Sanders and he has given me permission to share his email address with you. Patrick and I have been friends for about ten years. I offered to help him get started with his family history and setting it up online.

He and his family are quite excited about all they have learned about the family recently. He has the names of churches and cemeteries in Charleston and plans to follow through confirming information we have gathered with the churches and funeral directors here.

The information he puts together will be shared with The Avery Center at the College of Charleston, the Charleston County Public Library, and Salt Lake City and Afrigeneas.

His Email address is: peezoa@bellsouth.net.

He looks forward to hearing from you. So many members of the family have contacted Patrick recently to share information since his family history research began.

His mother, Patricia Sanders, is one of the oldest members of the family now, and she has a wealth of information tucked away in her memory. She is a stellar resource!

Good luck with your research. If you will send me your email address, I will invite you to participate in the family tree we have set up online, so that you can add your branches of the family and correct any misinformation that you find. Patrick's phone number is 843 437 9013. My number is 843 864 1900.

We are all so delighted to have heard from you.

Roonie Burt
Seabrook Island, S.C.

"My" Solomon Katz was born Abt. 1765 and not 1828. The Polish Katz info I have is sparse to say the least. If your Solomon was born in the Pozen/Poznan area or if you know the maiden name of his wife or her birth location, I would be interested. If you have any more Katz first names from the Pozen area, I can see if there is a match with what little I have. Most of my Katz are from Siberia. Sorry for the delay in reply; been in West Africa.

Obit for DONENFELD, Stanley ~ Dayton, Montgomery County, OH on 1 August 2008

Source: Stanley's obit was just posted to the Dayton Daily Newspaper on August 2, 2008

Stanley Ray DONENFELD, whose family’s specialty store was a shopping destination for Miami Valley women for decades, died Friday, Aug. 1. He was 87.

==========================================================

I'm not related to Stanley; but, I did know him. Having grown up in Dayton, I left there to move to FL in 1982. I loved shopping at his family's wonderful DONENFELD store in days when I worked at the First National Bank of Dayton and Winters Bank. His store was from an era when there was personal attention given to each customer....service long gone today. My thoughts and prayers go out to his family and friends. May God bless and keep him forever.

Best regards,

Pamela WELLS nee ROBERSON
Blowing Rock, NC
http://wellsp.tribalpages.com

========================================================

Hi,
My father, David Katz, was a member of the Gredinger Society. His second cousin, to whom he was very close, was Leon Katz. Their fathers were business partners in the town of Greiding (Gorodok) in the Russian province of Podolia. David (1900) and Leon (1901) were born in Greiding and immigrated to the US in the 1920s. They are now both buried in the Greidinger section of the United Hebrew Cemetery where other Katz family members are also nearby. I would be interested in any additional information that you may have.

Carole
Found three Payson infant who had died between 1850 and 1880. The parent's names were not included.

On Ancestry, have checked under a number of possible misspellings (Fayson, Bayson, Peyson, Pason, Peson, ect.)

Have been able to find one James Peson outside of Charleston and Berkley counties, about an hour's drive from the city in the appropriate time frame.

In the older Charleston City Directories, there simply are no Payson families listed.

Let us know if you find any new leads.

I have done extensive research into my Mendelson ancestral line. My great-great grandparents, which the wife's maiden name was Katz. Supposedly her father's name was Yankel or Iankel Katz. I know that my Mendelson's came from Shklov and later Mogilev, so the Katz would have been from that area as well otherwise my great-great-grandparents would not have been married to one another. I have lots of info on the Mendelson's but Zilch on the Katz's other then the name of my great-great-grandmother Beila-Ryvka Katz and her father Yankel. Beila-Ryvka was born about 1855-1858 and her husband a few years earlier. I had a research group comb through the archives in Minsk, Russia for my Mendelson line. Out of all the research they never turned up any mention of a marriage date.

Sarah

I am related to Katzman's from Mogilev - and some of them shortened their name to Katz. None of the names I have that used Katz match yours but I don't know very much about these relatives. You might want to check with other Katzmans or similiar names.

-Heather
