Hi, I was wondering if you found any information on Christian. I recently started looking into family trees and my grandma told me that her grandfather was named Christian (kris as she told me) who was married to a woman her parents refered to as leena. She thought her name was Caroline or something close to it. Maybe we're looking for the same person?

Hello Peter, thank you for contacting me. I wonder if you could give me some advice. I have looked up the archive services on the web but I am having difficulty translating into English. I am hoping that you have more experience than me in tracing ancestors in another country - where do I start - do you know who I contact in the area that Soloman was born.

Thank you

Sue

Hello,

for clarify, I believe this is D-56294 Münstermaifeld, some 20 km. SW of the centre of Koblenz.

Since this was in the mid-19th century, he would have had to obtain permission to emigrate, and those documents are available in the regional archives. You should also be able to trace his ancestors (back to at least the first decade of the 19th century) in the local archives.

Pls ask if you need any additional information.

Peter Wyant
Regina, saskatchewan, Canada

They may have been husband and wife but more likely brother and sister.

They were friends of a great aunt Cornelia Ellen Lines, of Curwensville, Clearfield Co., PA, and I have a couple of pictures of them together while visiting in Altoona, PA in 1910. See the attached photos.

The first attached photo is my great aunt with Guy Kaufmann and the second is with Ruth Kaufmann (standing).

Any help would be greatly appreciated!

RE: Kaufmann name/spelling/origins.

I just came across this thread, and thought I would add my 2 cents worth. What I had been told growing up is that Kaufmann is German for 'Merchant' as the German verb 'kaufen' means to sell. The different spellings were ways to differentiate between the Jewish and gentile families when the Germans were worried about those kind of things. I am descended from a Protestant line (I think) William and Minnie Kaufmann from Waldeck, GE who came to Brooklyn in 1872.

I don't have an exact birth date on her and no death date yet, but she married John Brilliott on 8 Nov 1886 in Sauk Co., WI.

Her parents' names are John and Josephine Kaufmann, who were born ca. 1833 in Luxembourg and ca. 1842 in Switzerland, respectively.
Close, Allan ...

kaufen: to buy; verkaufen: to sell

KAUFMANN (in German, almost always with one "f" and two "n's") does translate most closely to "merchant". ("Almost" always because it can, in rare instances, be found locally as KAUFMAN, KAUFFMAN and KAUFFMANN, but these are spellings found prior to the early 19th century and before the spelling of surnames became much more standardised.) There is no truth to the suggestion that gentiles spelt the surname differently to differentiate themselves from Jews; there are/were many surnames used by both Jews and gentiles ... the differentiation, if necessary, came through the use of different given names. You'll almost never find a gentile Moritz or a Jewish Katherina, for example.

As for KAUFMANN used by Jews (all spellings), Menk, "A Dictionary of German-Jewish Surnames" (Avotaynu, 2005) says that it is found in most of the German states, but never before 1800 so if one has pre-1800 KAUFMANNs, they're Christian.

Lastly, Menk says that the use of the surname by Jews comes from two sources: (1) as one would expect, from the German noun Kaufmann (see above), and (2) from a combination of "Kauf" (a Judeo-German hypocoristic form of the last syllable of Ya'akov ("Jacob")) with the old German diminutive suffix "man".

PSW

DATA: KAUFMANN (several different) listed in 1929 Richmond, VA yearbook

DATA Message RE: The Marshallite, 1929 John Marshall High School yearbook (Richmond, VA).

This yearbook lists the members of the Senior class of 1929, faculty members, members of the Corps of Cadets, and many members of various clubs (not all). Unfortunately, it does not list the names of the members of the Junior, Sophomore or Freshmen classes (only officers listed for those classes). It includes the following name(s):

Kaufman, L.
Kaufman, Lewis
Kaufmann, Irving
Kaufmann, Jr., J. Irving (Jimmie)

There's over 1,900 records, so I've only listed the name(s), as it appears in the yearbook in this message.

If you would like to view all of the information that I extracted from the yearbook, I have uploaded it to my freepages genealogy web site. The link to the first page of these extracts on my web site is:
http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.com/~sassytazzy/family/r...

Or it can be accessed through the "General Research" link on the main page at:
http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.com/~sassytazzy/index.ht...

Please note that my site contains free genealogy related data & IS NOT a "commercial" or "advertising" site. Until I can get back out & do research on my own families, my hobby is posting free genealogy related data online that may help other reseachers. I put all kinds of genealogy information on my web site (including information others send to me to share on the site), not just data about the families I am researching (therefore I can't answer questions about everyone I have listed on the site). I hope the information I've put online helps someone with their research . . .

Susan :)
Sassytazzy's Online Genealogy Research Library
http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.com/~sassytazzy/index.ht...

DATA: Kaufman, L. & Lewis listed in 1929 Richmond, VA yearbook
