Kaye antique items with family crest

I have in my possession some antiques that were made in about 1830 with the family coat of arms of the Kaye family. The objects are 6 beautiful mother of pearl gaming counters with initials on one side and the full armorial with motto on the other. The most impressive item is a stunningly carved tortoiseshell box with the full crest on
one side and the family initial on the underside. It is a truly stunning piece of carving.

If any members of your family are interested in purchasing the items then please let me know and I will send you some photos of the objects.

Best wishes,

Matthew Silverstone
We are searching for the ancestry of Rachel Alice Kaye who married Hugh Thornley Hudson who was born in 1838 in Chorley, Lancastershire, England. We do not know whether they were married in England or the North American continent. They had at least 3 children, Charles William, born 25 FEB 1832(from whom my grandchildren descend), Walter Marvin, born 1938 and a daughter, Florence. Kaye is, I think, a Scottish surname. We have no further info on this family as yet other than that Charles William was born in Baraboo, WI. Does anyone have any info to help us? Janet

Madelline Sims, born in Canada

My great-grandfather, Charles Hensley, is listed w/ his household in the 1920 census in St Joseph, MO. One entry for this household indicates a niece named "Madelline Sims" who was born in Canada. Her age was 18 so I'm assuming a birth year of 1901 or 1902.

Charles's wife was born Madge L Sims...according to a family tree written out by my grandfather, Madge had a brother named Henry. I'm only guessing that Madelline was his daughter. I cannot find any other info on Henry at all. Nor his wife or family.

Can anyone help? Do you have a Henry Sims or Madelline Sims in your family tree? Henry was the son of Daniel Sims and Sara S. (Kaye) Sims.

My family tree at the following link:
www.tribalpages.com/tribes/andersonfamily9

Kaye, Ronald; Kaye, Lewis; Mackenzie, Paul

I am looking for information about my grandfather's ancestry.

His (adopted) name was Ronald Lewis Kaye, b. (Paul MacKenzie (sp?)) in Toronto on or about Jul 6 1930. He was adopted at about the age of two and raised in Furgus (sp?) Ontario. ("Furgus" is the spelling I was given; it would appear to be Fergus, Centre Wellington, Ontario).

His adoptive parents were Lewis B Kaye who died in 1979 in Ontario and Olive L (Melville) who died about 1980 in Ontario. It has been suggested that the Kayes were relatives of his birth parents, who are said to have died in an accident.

On the following page,

http://homepages.rootsweb.com/~kayefile/denkaye2.html

I have found a Lewis Kaye in Palmerston, Wellington Centre, Ontario, about whom little seems to be known. I suspect this is my (adoptive) great-grandfather - the location is certainly right, and the time seems to be about right, but I would need more information to be sure.

Finally, any informartion about the birth parents of a Paul Mackenzie born Jul 6 1930 would also be very helpful.
On 1881 Census they lived in Linthwaite, Huddersfield. Mary Elizabeth Kaye married Charles Willie Dawson. Does anyone have any information about this family.
Christine

Kay Kaye West Yorkshire

I have posted my interests already but we have recently extended our knowledge and so I thought I would post again just in case there is anyone out there that can see a connection and who would be willing to share info.

The earliest family member we have conclusively identified is Paul Kay who died in Holmfirth 1818 - he had a son Simeon born 1785. Simeon was a miller and he married Ruth.. Their children were Joseph (b 1806), Lydia (b 1812), Charles (b 1815), Maria (b 1816), Eliza (b 1818), Ann (1820) and Paul (b 1822). All in and around Holmfirth or Austonley. They were all Wesleyan Methodists.

I have most interest at the moment in Simeons son, Paul, who is my great grandfather. Paul was born in Choppards and worked as a journeyman millwright. He married Sarah Moorhouse (from Upper Thong) and had children Simeon (b 1845), John (b 1848), Charles (b 1850), Joe (b 1853) and James (b 1856). Sarah was a weaver (as was most of the women) but her father was a clothier. On the 1850 birth record of Charles they were shown as living at Booth House near Holmfirth. By that time the Kay had been converted to Kaye - this could have been an accident as the flowery swirls at the end of Kay could easily be interpreted as Kaye however Paul could write and sign his own name so maybe it was a conscious decision.

After the death of Sarah (in childbirth ? in Boothhouse?) , Paul moved to Sheffield and remarried Jane Longden. Further children born of Jane were George, Amos (b 1869), Walter (1871), Frederick Edward (b 1872), Gertrude (b 1878) and Sarah (b 1880). They had moved to Hull by the time Paul died in 1880. Frederick Edward returned to Sheffield where he married his landlady and moved to Stainforth (where my father was born) and then to Adwick le Street where he met and married my mother.

best regards

Allen Kaye
Welwyn Garden City
England

My mother's maiden name was Keay, daughter of Nathaniel Keay, traceable to Southwestern Maine or nearby New Hampshire in the early 19th century. It is not clear from family records just which Keay came from either England or Scotland, or whether a Kaye changed the spelling somewhere along the line.
Looking for ggrandmother

I am trying to find my great grandmother. She was married to Theophile/Theofield Kaye. I believe her name was Celia or Celina Laurent. She was born in Belgium and lived in Green Bay, WI. I think she and her husband and son Alexander came to the U.S. in 1870. My grandmother was Josephine, her daughter, born about 1875 but listed in the 1880 census as Joseph, son. After her (Celia) husband died she left her family and no one is sure if she married again or where she went. There is no one left alive in my immediate family that I can ask. She had other sons, John. Edward and I believe another. Does this fit anyone's history? My grandmother, Josephine married John Taylor. Could anyone help? Thanks much. Carol

KAYE family from Huddersfield, YKS, England

My husband's KAYE family came from the town of Huddersfield in Yorkshire, England. We've traced back to Richard KAYE (who was probably a son of James), born 1793 and christened at the Kirkheaton parish church. Richard married Sarah WORTHINGTON in 1817; they had 9 children, two of whom emigrated to the US before 1850.

Jesse Ingham KAYE (b. 1818) settled first in Philadelphia with his wife Nancy (DRANSFIELD) and at least one of their children. Nancy died in 1850, leaving Jesse with his daughter Eliza (age 5). Jesse remarried in 1853 to Anna Louisa KLING of Philadelphia; they had 11 children, four of whom died young. The family moved around quite a lot, living in Indiana and Illinois before settling in Riverside, Washington County, Iowa in 1859.

William Worthington KAYE (b. 1822) came to Philadelphia with his wife Sarah (OATES) and two small children. Four more children (1 boy and 3 girls) were born in Philadelphia between 1850 and 1859; the son, William Henry KAYE, was my husband's great-grandfather. Later generations of this family moved across the river to Camden & Gloucester Counties in New Jersey, where some relatives are living still.

If anyone has ties to either side of this family, please let me know.

---

This message originally appeared January 12, 2000, on the KAYE Files message board (now defunct).
He died June 3, 1864, during the Battle of Cold Harbor (VA), one of the bloodiest battles of the Civil War.

William & Sarah had 6 children altogether:

Henry E., b. about 1846 in England; possibly d. before 1865*
Emma, b. about 1848 in England; possibly d. before 1865*
Sarah, chr. 1850 in Leeds
William Henry, b. 1854 in Philadelphia; d. 1931 in NJ
Elizabeth Atkinson, b. 1857 in Philadelphia
Edna Ellen, b. 1859 in Philadelphia

[* these two children do not appear in William W.'s US Army pension file as dependent minor children; the other 4 do]

William Worthington KAYE was a gunsmith by trade (even in England), who kept a shop in the Northern Liberties neighborhood of Philadelphia for at least 14 years (1850-1864 ... we have copies of city directory pages showing his location).

He enlisted in the Army in January 1864 at the age of 41, and was assigned to G Co. 183rd Inf Reg. of the Pennsylvania Volunteers. William W. fought in 10 major battles between May 5 and June 3, 1864. Two of these battles, the Battle of the Wilderness (May 5-7) and the Battle at Spotsylvania (May 8-12), are among the "Top Ten Costliest Battles" of the Civil War, according to the "Official Records of Major Battles of the Civil War" Internet website. ( http://www.civilwarhome.com/records.htm )

William Worthington's son William Henry KAYE, who was only 9 years old when his father died in the war, was my husband's great-grandfather.

Richard KAYE

We're searching for any descendants of Richard KAYE, born in 1793, who may have been a son of James KAY(E). Richard married Sarah WORTHINGTON at Kirkheaton Parish Church (Huddersfield, Yorkshire, England) on October 2, 1817.

Richard & Sarah had 9 children:

Jesse Ingham, b. 1818, Dalton, Yorkshire; d. 1886 in IA
Sarah Ann, b. 1820, Dalton
William Worthington, b. 1822, Dalton; d. 1864 in VA (Civil War)
Elizabeth, b. 1824, Dalton
Emma, b. 1826; d. 1827
Richard Henry, b.1827
Mary, b. 1830
Eliza Emeline, b. 1833
Ellen Walter, b. 1835

Richard appears in the 1841 Census of Dalton, and is mentioned on the marriage certificate of his son William Worthington and Sarah OATES (from Leeds). Sarah is shown as a widow in the 1851 census of Huddersfield. Her date of death hasn't been confirmed yet.

Jesse Ingham and William Worthington KAYE emigrated to the US between 1845-1850; possibly together, but we haven't found passenger lists to support that theory, yet. They both appear in the 1850 Federal Census of Philadelphia, PA.
